Direct X 11?

My PC is Due replacement - So I am waiting for E.D. to come out, I will try it on my current PC - check out what others say is the best to play it on - then upgrade.

This is the second time I will have purchased a PC just to play a game :)

Exactly my plan too, all I have to do now is either hide the funds or break the news to my wife ;)

Well I took the plunge and ordered a new system over the weekend. I felt the time was right because from what I've read a lot of the custom PC manufacturers can take a month to put together a new system (even though they say 10 working days). Hoping to get my new system by November and get it up and running. That will give me time if there are any issues to get them sorted out before ED beta (will probably upgrade to Alpha in december if I'm being honest). I also wanted to avoid ordering too near to Christmas time to avoid any potential delays.

I'll build my PC ... I wait the specs for E: D before buying it.

I was under the impression it was a versatile game engine, as in cross platform to an extent ?
If so I'd be surprised its running any directX code, would of thought OpenGL was the choice seeing as there is going to be a Mac version.

Only the 2nd time? you not been gaming long then :p

EVERY PC except for my very first (back in early 90's) was bought to play one game or another, from Doom, Through to Counter strike Global offensive.... next upgrades are for Elite.

You're quite probably right with this one.

I know they havent said much about system requirements, but I was wondering if someone could tell me will E:D require Direct X 11 compatible video cards?

Hi Corto,

We haven't been told about the specs yet but I seriously doubt the game will use only dx11. Most developers are really comfortable with dx9, its possible there will be two clients dx9 and dx11. Having said that if you are still using a card that is only dx9 capable its probably more like an antique so perhaps not a bad idea to replace. Its a wait and see situation.

I hope we are going to see some dx11 stuff. dx9 is old now and devs really should be moving toward dx11 - if for no other reason than the shaders and effects that are offered.

Thats a good point. DirectX is superior than OpenGL mind.

This is what I just bought on PC Specialist because there was an offer:

Chassis & Display Vortex Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4700MQ (2.40GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M - 4.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
Memory - 1st Hard Disk 120GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW)
2nd Hard Disk 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

I had to get a laptop because of space requirements and my wife didn't want the big set up I originally planned. Shame, because this was an expensive way of going about it.

It's run everything on Ultra so far.

I'm in the same boat, I can't really go for a full tower system due to space requirements too so I've been looking at mini PCs on PC Specialists as I want something I can upgrade in future. Been torn between these two (one a mini pc the other a laptop)...

BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Case
i5-4570 6MB Cache
8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 760

or

MSI CX61 Laptop
Intel® Core™ i7-4702MQ Haswell Quad Core Processor
8GB DDR3 RAM
Dedicated GT 740M 2GB Graphics

The mini is about £150 more but I'm wondering if its worth it for the ability to upgrade the cpu and gpu in two or three years time, plus I plan to play Star Citizen too which the GTX 760 will handle better than the 740M. Decisions decision :(

How long did PC Specialist take to build and deliver your laptop?

I'm not really equipped to say which is superior tbh as I can't code in either, I have seen the same game run with both directX and OpenGL and the difference was not obviously apparent to me.

A few years back now - but they built and delivered a PC to me within their stated timeframe.
They do a 3 or 5 day fast-track service (for a price - £69 or £39, I think).

There is no question, you should go for the mini. 740M is nothing compared to a GTX 760. I generally think its self defeating to buy gaming laptops, it will be obsolete for gaming in a few years and you'll have a much better gaming experience with a desktop.

My ideal setup is to have a cheap laptop for any mobile work stuff I need and a desktop for gaming.

Yeah I think that's what I'll be edging toward, but it probably means I'll be missing out on Beta II as it'll take another month or two of saving the extra for the mini, unless the prices plummet in the January sales! :D

check out PC Specialist (or any other custom builder) and see what they can do. They will be cheaper than an off the shelf product and you will get better value for money.

They took 14 working days to deliver my laptop.

Well, I hope they go with DirectX 11 only. (And what ever level of OpenGL is the equivilent, and I'm aware that OpenGL has languished badly of late)

DirectX 11 been around for 4 years, there is no good reason to support older stuff. It's back ported to Vista, so OS wise, it goes back to 2006. How far back should support go?

By the time Elite Dangerous is out in 2014 DirectX 11 will be 4 1/2 years old.

Going by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX DirectX 11's biggest benefit seems to be improved multi threading and multi core CPU support. This is something that can be a real benefit. Especially as single core performance isn't improving much any more.

OpenGL current best level is 4.2 and you can get quite same performance as from DirectX 11 (except some nice looking gotchas). However problem is that OGL is harder to program than DirectX, and that's main reason why DX remains so popular. Still, in properly trained hands game have no problem to look beautiful even with OpenGL. Btw, multi threading and multi core CPU support is usually a part of OpenGL libraries on system.

Well if Frontier only want to make the game playable on Windows and the Xbox then directX might be used, but they're not are they ?

So they are either using OpenGL or coding it twice in two different API's which would be insane :S

I'll build my PC ...

Same for me. I will build my PC myself. I order the components in detail and I get them 2-3 days later. I assemble them, and go. But I will not wait the specification Frontier for the game, because I'll take the top of the pyramid. My PC is 10 years old and I deserve a new pc at the top.

;)

My mid 2008 iMac is just about coping with Rome 2. Planning on a new iMac with a 'windfall' that comes my way in November :)

However both Nvidia and ATI/AMD have both announced increased driver compatability with OpenGL recently. This is probably tied to the recent SteamOS announcement. Using OpenGL will however mean it'll be easier to port Elite: Dangerous to other operating systems.

Using DirectX 11 will mean that only Windows 7 and 8 users can play, which will probably mean that the fallback of using DirectX 9 will be the default unless they go the OpenGL route.
