General / Off-Topic New Star Trek Series?

I think I understand the two minds bit. They put together an excellent crew, but that line "Renegades, as the name suggests, will be bold, edgy and a little dark." Does that just mean they'll use lower powered lighting and they'll be a lot of swearing?

What's wrong with light and fluffy, with a nice sense of humour?

"We're bringing back TellyTubbies but this time they'll be bold, edgy and a little dark."

It's definitely something to keep an eye on and strikes me as a labour of love. Personally I think it's got potential and the darker side of Star Fleet, away from all the Earl Grey and Raktajino would be interesting to explore.

Star Trek has always been somewhat sterile. I wonder if "darker and grittier" Star Trek should even be called Star Trek anymore. Still, an interesting concept and I'll be looking forward to seeing it.

I think it's the conflict between the ideals of the Federation vs the realities of living in a hard time. I can't remember the series of books that I 1st read this in, but I've always like the idea of the hero not actually being able to cope with the world he's trying to create...

The "could go wrong" thing reminds me of the last Stargate series where they were stranded on a ship far away from the rest of humanity - except that they ruined the concept by allowing them to "mind visit" Earth and tagging on silly arguments between the crew members that never felt "real" (they just gave you the feeling that the arguments didn't originate from the characters, but were there simply as plot devices).

OK, I like this new Star Trek Project.
If it puts Star Trek back on the screen again, then I hope it does well.

The opening to Stargate Universe was great... HUGE potential before diluting itself into a homeopathic treatment of sci fi serism You are welcome to use the new words i created for this sentence.

Thank you. I am sure it will become a perfectly cromulent word and will embiggen a man to use it.

I'm gregariously happy to use real words I don't fully understand, but I draw the line at made-up words that I'm not sure of.

What does 'serism' mean?

this was my intending meaning..

ser·ism
/ˈserˌizəm/
Noun
a made up word to make series sound more exciting.

I agree - love Startrek, I used to sneak down the hallway as a kid to watch it through the crack in the door - when I was supposed to be asleep, was even better when my parents got a colour TV :D

I thought Voyager was their edgier and darker effort that blandly followed the series that came before.

Don't get me wrong I did enjoy Voyager and it did have scope to really be a darker series, and indeed there were a couple of cracking episodes that did just that, but it still ended up following the same bland formula of the previous incarnations.

That being said, am happy to give this a go if it takes off.

All sequels to movies and videogames are using the terms "Darker and Edgier" to promote them. What's so great about dark and edgy? It's like the only people the ad departments are interested in are Goths.

The Maquis vs federation bit didn't really work, but it gets my vote for the EMH and, of course, 7 of 9.
So be as edgy as you want, but don't forever the Lycra!
It could be pantafristick

Forcing the Maquis and Federation to share the one ship was a great premise. The series was let down by the script.

I felt the same thing happened to "Enterprise". Going back to a time when small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. Dashing captains had to rely on their wits to overcome obstacles.

And then they went and used the Transporter to win the day<sigh>.

pantafristick is a great made-up word, you deserve reputational points for that.
