PSA: You can criticize something you also enjoy.

Since this forum is filled with people who try and deflect any criticism of the game by saying "You don't get it" i feel someone needs to state something most 6 year olds have figured out:

Criticizing something doesn't mean you hate it or its bad. Criticizing things is how things are improved. Adults who have rational minds can enjoy something while realizing it has room for improvement.

Many people on this forum - such as myself - love Elite Dangerous and are happy it has made it this far. However we are entirely capable of admitting that the game has failed to pull some things off and has some areas where it needs some significant improvement.

Heres the bottom line: if you actually love this game - and aren't just someone that has to justify ever purchase they commit to by pretending its the best thing ever - you will be able to discuss and see its flaws and shortcomings.

Absolutely you can. There are some examples out there of constructive criticism. The problem is that most people open up with criticism in such an immature and alarmist fashion that it just causes people to react defensively and offensively.

Ignore the haters, keep struttin'

I think part of the problem is that modern disease - "backer entitlement". When wishes and dreams and thoughts on how something should be, or people thought it was going to be turn into vitriol and sniping.
I'm content with this excellent game, eager for the things not yet delivered, excited about what's to come and in no way afraid to dish out some reasoned criticism!

Wrote something to that effect today: My ramblings regarding "entitlement"

Now, can we just fast forward to the 3rd and I can get on with testing 1.1 ;-)

If you're looking for reassurance. Yes, there must be more than a few people around here with sound mind and comparatively little delusion ;) Perhaps the sheer volume and spectrum of opinion can hide this now and again. There may even be a large common ground of how the game should develop, there's certainly plenty room for disagreement too.

Much of what gets run down isn't constructive criticism in the first place. It's "OMG this is so boring/useless please make it 'x' so I'll be happier." with the implied "I know better than average people what teh funz is." There are always going to be a few knobs who will overreact defensively to any change in things, but at the end of the day Michael, Sandro, and the rest of the design crew seem to be pretty well attuned to the overall ebb and flow of player opinion and make decisions appropriately.

Of course, to this date I have not seen any Game that was perfect and I'm sure I never will.

But when my opinion is diffrent, I will of course disagree, that is all fine. What I really hate is when People want me to tell that there Opinions are Facts and that I am sort of wrong for having Fun, I really hate that. As somone who likes trading and mode Switching I see that a lot and over time it can add up to critical mass and overheat my Systems.

Critical review of the game is one thing. Mindless moaning and complaining is another. The two are not equivalent.
.
But I'm sure you appreciate that :)

Most 'critics' keep regurgitating the same rage infused drivel over and over again. It's their business to embarrass themselves, tho.

Would disagree with the term "most". There are some pointless whine threads but there are literally dozens of threads will well thought out criticism and suggestions to improve which are spammed full of self-described eighties players saying things such as "sausages" are another complete derails.

This forum has a bit of a problem with often older players shutting down any legitimate discussion that threatens their view of Elite as being the best game ever made.

What's the point in proving the opposite? You just want to argue, that's all.

Which is precisely why the ones that start their post with ragequit sentences get soundly thrashed for their idiocy.

I think the bold section is a bit of a stretch but I agree with the rest.

Have seen that exact excuse made in multiple threads by multiple people.

Well the game clearly isn't and rather then pretending it is i would rather see the issues that could put it close to being the best get handled. Adults want to improve the things they love - not pretend they're perfect from the get go.

Also yes i love arguing - that's a good thing. Argumentation and debate is how we went from cave-men to building advanced civilizations. it wasn't by expressing platitudes and ignoring reality.
