war zone? what war zone?

Wasn't aware missions to war zones actually existed, are you sure?

But if so, what you are looking for is High or Low Intensity Conflict Zones on your map. And have you used your discovery scanner in the system? If the system is not a known one to you, then you might not be able to see them without first finding them.

They exist but somethinme they are too far and it's really hard to find them without looming close every planets.

i dont know, i was looking for a war zone (high or low intensity) but there were none.
that was a discovered system (more or less - i'm nor sure, i dont remember if i ever explored malloc in detail and actually i just have a plain a basic discovery scanner on this ship)
but the problem solved itself: i stumbled upon a dude offering me an abandon option - an option i was unable to refuse because, well, there were no other option... just like with the "abandon killing pirates"-thing.
no alternatives, just a fact: "you just abandon this mission". period.
(not so) nice... :-/

You can only see them (and most other non-planet and non-space-station locations) if you are within 1000 Ls.

There is another option on that, and on the pirate missions. You don't have to tell the NPC what you choose or anything, there's not any place you have to click to make your choice; you "choose" by either going and continuing to do the original mission goals, or by doing the alternate mission goals. So if you get "abandon killing pirates" - just go ahead and kill them if you want to. It is annoying in that it resets your kill count, but otherwise you just go therefore and kill.

Threre are no alternate mission goals.
There are alternate mission goals when the dude says "oh, dont kill pirates, kill authority instead" (or something like that).
But in this (and a lots of) case(s), it just said "oh, abandon". you get no choice, there is no "alternat target" and "alternate system" - nothing.
You abandon. Fact. :-/
A sad one, 'coz the reward is about 10%.

Oh, and definitely thanks for the 1000Ls tip!
