Open letter to David

Dear David,

I hope your post release vacation was all you hoped it would be and that your recovery from laryngitis is going well. We all hope you have a speedy recovery and look forward to hearing from you again! In the meantime I've prepared a few questions and comments for you, hopefully you'll be able to answer once your voice has recovered. I'll skip the questions I'm sure you've heard already, for example; "Who the heck authorized that release trailer?" has just been asked to death and I'm not sure we are over the fits of uncontrollable laughter the video caused, not to mention what it could do to your voice if the giggles set back in.

I think it only fair that I tell you that "I bring friends". That is, as with Elite: Dangerous's premiere live broadcast, friends may pop in on a previously rehearsed script or indeed, like the game in it's current form, friends may attempt to pop in but, fail to do so or somehow they'll show up but only a few of us will be able to see what they have typed. Either way, if you use your imagination, "I bring friends".

Right then, I'll just dive right into the questions and comments!

Regarding your "vision" for the game, as stated in the nice speeches you gave at various media and industry events, on YouTube videos and in the press, do you plan to fully realize that vision in-game or is FD doing more of a "cleanup" of the release mess and then moving on to another "vision", like Scream Ride or that cute Coaster Park thing for example?

I had several more questions and comments for you but, I'll let "my friends" ask or comment on those, just bear in mind that we might not be able to see what they are saying or for some reason their questions / comments may magically end up in another thread but, they are here none the less, although probably in another instance or at the disconnected screen. After all this is an "open" letter, even though I'd imagine most will choose to "solo" this letter and bypass it altogether.

As stated earlier I hope your vacation was spectacular and that your voice recovers soon. I miss all those talks we used to have and look forward to many many more in the future as there's obviously so much more of your "vision" that you haven't shared with us yet, at least as far as in the game is concerned.

Cheers,

Commander Vertical Slice and the Bare Bones crew!

P.S.: Thank you for those lovely backer rewards you shipped when the game released! I haven't received them yet but, I'm sure they are in the same package that the "vision" shipped in. :D

Angle is David was all over the place pitching the game before release. Now that it's out and in a mess we haven't heard a peep from him.

After writing such a sarcastic open letter, I'd have thought you would have picked up on my sarcasm.

I'd suggest you go outside or something. Posts like this aren't going to elicit a response from the owner of a successful game development company.

Well, he already got our money, didn't he? :)

Exactly!

It's the way the world works... in the lead up to something, publicise it. When it gets released, hope to god that people just disappear and leave you alone.

Look at politics... in the lead up to elections, they are always your best friends... kissing babies, helping grannies, drinking beer awkwardly on a brewery visit... then once elected - BAM - they hide away for a while :D

What do you want to achieve with this post?

Thats because he's sacked all the coders that messed up the implementation of his 'vision', locked himself in his mums bedroom with a BBC Micro, rolled up his sleeves and is beavering away writing the game that he should have made in the first place.......

I can never understand why he pretty much wrote Frontier and FFE himself, they were amazing games only let down by mediocre graphics and a few bugs due to a hasty launch.
And then with elite dangerous he went and hired a huge team of people who took two years to write half a sequel......

Perhaps he would have been better coding the entire thing himself in BBC Basic and getting some graphics guys to skin it up real nice.....

To point out what you just said. Since FD was paid in advance, we're somewhat at their mercy. A lot of us spent a lot of money on nothing but words and nice pictures. Myself, I don't trust them farther than my fuel-deprived Type 7 can jump, and appreciate to see that they at somewhat lived up to their original promise so far. What happens in the future is yet undetermined.
