Newcomer / Intro Weapon rating question.

I'm curious about the letter ratings that weapons have. I assumed that there were A through G variants of each weapon, kind of like other modules with A being the best and G being the worst, but I don't think I've ever seen any weapons that have a different rating. Every one that I've seen has always been the same rating. So my question is are there A rated multi-cannons, lasers, missiles etc.?

I have only seen D through G weapons, but it could be that A to C weapons are only for the large and very large hard points, and since I don't have any of them, I won't get shown items that require them in outfitting, so not a definitive answer I'm afraid.

Yes you have rating A to G and you also have different classes, you have class 1,2 and 3, I think there aren't class 4 weapons because I haven't seen them yet and I play the game since early Beta.
There should be a different rating between the weapons, allbeit a small difference, and the weapon type also changes, from gimballed to fixed for example. The classes are obvious, the higher the weapon class the better the weapon and show the damage difference and thermal overload etc. If you have a Class 2 D beam laser and there is also a class 2 C or B beam laser then that one is better.

Oh and yes there are A rated laser, cannons and missile launchers.

So is there no definitive answer?

use the compare feature in the outfitting section....... it may become clearer

higher damage is normally offset by higher power draw or lower rate of fire or lower ammunition in the magazine

gain with one hand and lose with the other

I would if I knew that multiple grades of a weapon existed, so far I haven't seen more than one letter grade of each weapon (i.e. Class 1 Gimbled Multi-Cannon's that I've seen are all G rated).

Actually found an uprated beam laser. The standard one is E rated, the new one D. When fitted (I had one of each at first on my Cobra) the new D rated one was about twice the size of of the old E rated one. Exactly the same shape, twice the size.

If that's true for a C rated one, I'm not sure that you could fit it to a Cobra.

Forgot to mention: Price. E rated beam laser (fixed) 37500cr, D rated version: 266000cr.

We gave you answers, I'm not sure what you're asking. You asked if there are A rated weapons and the answer is yes.
It's weird that you have seen only G rated weapons but have you looked at other systems and other stations? Because there are different weapons at different stations.

I think when it comes to weapons the class of weapon indicates an improvement over the same type of weapon and the rating only indicates the type.

So for example with weapons you can have small, med, large hardpoints (classes). A gimbled pulse laser for a small hardpoint will do G level of damage (rating) but if the hardpoint is medium you can upgrade the gimbled pulse laser to a medium class and it will do F level of damage, as it is a bigger gun.

Fixed pulse lasers start at F for small, E for medium etc. as fixed lasers are more powerful than gimbled (but trickier to aim).

To get higher rating weapons you need to change the weapon. So a beam laser or cannon might be a rating D or higher, for example.

What I've never seen is a gimbled pulse laser that is for a small or medium hardpoint with a higher rating. i.e. a gimbled pulse laser with a small/medium class which is rating D or higher. I don't think weapons work like that in the same way as the ship modules. But I could be wrong, maybe they are out there but rare.

No it's not. The mass changes, the power draw changes, the rate of fire changes and the damage per second changes. Gimbaled , fixed and turret changes also.

read post #1 again

then look at my wiki link

it appears that you can get D,E,F and G rated pulse lasers ... no greater

ie A, B or C

ok?

if you can or have found something better than my 1G pulse laser to put on my Viper please post a screenshot and correct the Wiki :)

Maybe not with pulse lasers, but I thought there are A, B class beam lasers and rail guns for example. But maybe I'm mistaken.

Weapon ratings are different than fitting ratings in this regard. If you want a size 1 B rated weapon - look at a missile rack. They are only B rated.

It's different and confusing. They do need to clean it up but it might be for future expansion use to allow for variants that just don't exist at this time.

I assumed that there were A through G variants of each weapon

confusing the matter by mixing in different weapon types is not really helping here :(

Yeah it's confusing. But in the end I always check the damage, damage per second, the mass and the rate of fire. Most of the time I don't even look at the numbers.

i suspect you do ... because u won't get a class 2 or 3 laser into a class 1 mount on a Viper :)
