Multiplayer (co-op) missions only?

On the 32 != massive point, just remember it is limited to 32 in your vicinity. You could still bump into 10k unique people, just only 32 at a time.

Which is exactly how WoW used to work anyway, I.e. You never saw the entire server population in IronForge ;)

I think the difference is that while WoW has instances, it didn't have sessions with player limits. So potentially you could have had the entire server population in Ironforge (though it would have probably made even Blizzard's hardware crash).

For practical purposes though, it was rare for even MMOs like WoW to have many more than 32 people directly interacting at the same location (raids used to be 40 player, but that was tuned down to 25). So you're unlikely to notice a significant difference to the typical MMO environment when playing multiplayer ED.

...

True. I am hoping that when landing at a space station that more people can interact that when in combat.

First person gameplay aside (another topic), surely even 20 people active in your area at once is enough? Then add on NPC craft too in keeping with the area (eg: busy around earth)?

I'd imagine if you jump into an area and can see 20-40 ships, many of which are real people, that should be interesting enough?

Definitely! The limit is only on player ships not NPCs, so with a full package of 32 players and goodness knows how many NPCs, things could get Interesting.

Actually, last thing you want in MMO is to have many players around.
I still recall with horror my fist event in Ultima Online. I recall it being maybe few dozen players trying to defend a small tower.

Horrible. Just flat out horrible (and we were not even near whole server population). Nobody really knew what was going on due to lag, attacking was a pain because what looked most dangerous was likely dead already but one behind it had managed to walk to you unopposed while you were waiting to see what had taken place.

Anyone who is interested in what it is like to be "massively" multiplayer in same location could try this: Watch a movie, but skip forward 5 minutes, freeze the movie for half a minute and then skip forward again. Repeat until finished the movie.

Missions or contracts which can only be given or seen when in a group sounds fun. Some missions may not be given if solo, because it would be certain death to undertake it alone and therefore will only be available for coop play to encourage people making more groups or alliances/friends. And thus making people play more together.

I play Neverwinter MMO for my sins (just to pass some time, it isn't the best mmo, but it is free). Anyway, they have group missions that do not force you to play as a group, they just flag up differently and you have to override the warnings to try it by yourself or with a smaller party than the recommended quantity/level combo.

Works well as you can take the risk if you like without this immersion breaking "no your party is too small go away" factor.

So I think Elite could flag missions and suggest to you that you should take back-up, rather than specifically putting you in a queue awaiting other players to join before undertaking it (though that is an option). Thus you can choose to hire NPC's or get your mates online/invite other players to help you.

In principle though i do like the idea of missions that require back-up.

You know you can hire some NPC to do the job with you ... do not forget solo online player please ;)
