Elite, EVE and a humble request for "more" content, esp. of the PvP variety

I'm contemplating a stroll to the dark side: EVE. But first, full disclosure: I'm not a fan of the broader EVE community - at least many of those active on their forums and actively ganking/griefing/conning folks in-game. Some of the game's players are simply despicable.

The game/software itself, however, is pretty cool. The EVE universe feels like a "big" place by virtue of the number of folks that can play together simultaneously, and it feels dangerous - contrary to Elite, currently. Death has real meaning. Sure, there's insurance, but you have to rebuy your ship and all parts when you're destroyed, and all those parts have real world monetary value. Moreover, after watching some videos again recently, I appreciate the less-black aesthetic of "their" space, coupled with weight/feel of the different size ships (big ships turn slowly, small ships are much more maneuverable). Of course, you're not so much flying as pointing and clicking in the game, but the game is oddly drawing me in. And I'm not an EVE fan. I've subscribed, unsubscribed only to resubscribe and unsubscribe again. All this over just 6 months of actual gameplay. So why would I consider subscribing a 3rd time? It's a big, complicated game with a TON of people-interaction. I didn't enjoy it when I attempted to PvE, but I think I stand a reasonable chance of enjoying it if I join one of the big Corporations friendly to folks who just want to learn the intricacies of the game - such as EVE University.

I've got to be honest, I never in a million years thought I'd feel this way. While I LOVE the core engine in Elite, I really would love to see more added. Yes, I'm being a total hypocrite. Months ago I posted threads about how to have fun and avoid boredom in the game. I believed it with a passion... then. Now, I feel the need to be able do more. I agree with others who said that there needs to be more to do - and yes, it's a young game and more content will surely be added. But imagine Elite flight mechanics coupled with scale and complexity of EVE (not talking number of systems, but rather number of features). Wow - that would totally awesome. An absolute home run. And no, I don't expect Elite to evolve into EVE with actual flight mechanics. Elite clearly needs to become it's own thing, but many things can obviously be learned from the EVE engine.

I will absolutely continue to play Elite - though possibly not with the same enthusiasm I did from the beginning of premium beta. I've barely touched any other games for many, many months. But I now feel the urge for more.... features and interaction. More "life" to the universe and more stuff to do. I haven't touched Elite for a week - which is unusual for me. I have a cool set up, bought specifically for Elite: a gaming chair with Saitek rudder pedals, a Thrustmaster Warthog, Track IR 5, Oculus DK2... But I haven't touched this multi-thousand dollar set-up in a week.

I'm not sure if anyone feels similarly and is going through the same. But again, just to clarify: I'm NOT a big EVE fan. I've been quite the opposite, for some time, in fact.

But again, the core mechanics of EVE are pretty sound (minus the non-existent flight model, of course!). As I think about EVE, I also think there are some really quick and basic things Elite could do to drive more interaction - get the most from it's multiplayer experience. Wings is obviously a step in the right direction, but imagine really basic player-run corporations - as a starting point in Elite: Just being able to create one and accept members - could work just like a friends list in-game. Except you'd be a part of a named corporations. Would help drive player interaction, though the small instance size might limit actual interaction of course. And system-wide chat - for those wanting to participate - could also be created. Heck, it could be set up as in-ship text messaging via a ship intercom, to make it feel less "gamey". There are so many things, I think, FD could do to increase player interaction/collaboration, many of which may not need massive amounts of development time by FD.

I'd personally love to see some of these things shoved to the forefront of the development roadmap, as until then, this game will be a largely PvE experience. Which is of course how it started, but I'd still like to see more PvP stuff.

Anyway, a bit of a ramble. If you got this far - and managed to digest 50% of it - well done, you'll get an A+! And make no mistake about it: I LOVE Elite! I just want it to improve further.

+1 . I agree. Although I don't like EvE I believe that the gaming experience can be improved if we adopt the best practices and best features of EvE while retaining the uniqueness and sould of Elite.

I don't understand why you have such an urge to repeat several times that you're no EVE fan - it's no shame to like that game you know :) After all, EVE is the best player driven sandbox MMORPG there is. I, for one, have been playing it passionately for seven years, and still have fond memories of it. Quit only after I felt that I've done pretty much everything, and my old buddies leaving for same reason also contributed to that decision.

+1, but like Manny said, it's only starting, and look on the bright side! With pay-subscription titles such as Eve, there's always the idea that if too many people decide to take a break from it, wait for more content, etc, and stop paying the subscription fee that the existence of it could be threatened. But since Elite was a one-time purchase (outside of skins and future expansions, of course,) you have the option of setting the game aside whenever you please, for as long as you please, with only an eye kept on changelogs and released expansions to decide when to jump back in. :3 I think I'll inevitably take a long break from this game at some point, but it doesn't mean I won't be returning somewhere down the road.

Despite not being a fan of EVE you want to add some of the very things that drive the very things that you don't like about the EVE Community?

As a player of Eve from beta...yea a long long time ago...this game is NOTHING like eve. Yea it's in space but it's like you saying just because you ate a cow pie with bread on top n bottom you ate a sandwich that was just like my Ham n cheese. Nope.

This is more like...well...Elite. with almost FPS multiplayer functions (that don't work right atm). You must not be from the C64 era.

Edit: wait less than a month and play Homeworld remastered with multiplayer and mod support...(omg I think I just peed a bit) n spare yourself the EvE virus...it's catchy and soup doesn't help but then it goes away fast.

Um... just what did you think eve was like 12 years ago when it started..single word...small..tiny...buggy....12 years and over 20 expansions changes a game....Elite is just starting..give it a chance.

Quite - Eve was truly awful in Beta and not a great deal better at launch. Fortunately for CCP there wasn't any other options for the genre or there would have been far more rage quitting at that point than there was.

I guess unless you were there, you don't appreciate that because later on (after several big updates - which took an age to download) it seemed so much slicker.

This and...

This too.

All the EvE lore and stories and tech updates and bugs and bugs and bugs and patched breaking peoples computers and...all games grow and get better or they die. This is not an IP that will prob die. It will only get better.

BUT, until they fix grouping I am NOT going to invite even one more friend to join. I already wasted 60 bucks buying the game for my friend who took one look at the multiplayer connection issues and said nope and never logged in again.

You know what "Content" was at launch in EvE? "HOLY COW! that corp mined the crap outa some veld rocks they all have Cruisers!!!! wooow! (NO SERIOUSLY) And if you had a battleship you were a GOD. Just think...in a few years we will be talking about the "content" we are making...hey remember back in launch when it was a big deal to own an Anaconda? Ha ha yea awe the old days. Sandbox games are like good books...they are the last adult level of playing "pretend" we can get away with. The best content is in your minds imagination. Just sayin.

As somone who pretty much always said "no" to people mentioning Eve, have some Rep Mr. Katkon.

Because you are also the first one I see (maybe there have been in others I just didn't see) who didn't ask to change Elite in a drastic way (Modes, Instancing) and your are just asking to add some more content to it. And Yes, Elite can need more Content, no question about that.

Elite needs to be more "Dangerous", but with the ability to switch between solo and open, plus P2P it will never happen. Just unplug if something bad happens to you, all the risk goes out the window.

The game was built on bad architecture, plain and simple.

I admit, I got as far as "EVE" and skimmed over the rest.

Why do you hate EvE? It has been the most successful Sci-Fi MMO ever made. Shouldn't we learn something from the success of others? That's what a smart man would do.

Meanwhile, SWTOR cost over 100 million dollars to make and they are losing money right now despite having the Star Wars name attached to their product. EvE is still going strong, still making money and will continue doing so.

Amazing how many brand new accounts are showing up here for this thread, isn't it....

Doesn't Ortho make a spray for meta-sockpuppet-b-gone?

You again. Wrong Thread.

Yes, some of the features, but not the people. I wouldn't suggest Elite supporting EVE's contract features, which enable conning, for example. I wouldn't suggest warp gates which support gate camping. But I personally like the corp grouping mechanics, system-wide chat and a bunch of other things. I also love the sense of scale that EVE achieves - a small ships looks/handles like a small ship etc. I like th idea of being able to declare war on other factions/corps (though I've never participated in an EVE war). Many of the core game mechanics are pretty cool IMHO. I think we'll see bits and pieces "ported" into Elite over time, but it'll undoubtedly take a while.
