Newcomer / Intro Running out of fuel, then self destructing wipes your map data

So, after the mystery Fed interdiction, I jumped to the next system, but no fuel ports. Ok, cool, I messed up. Hit self destruct.

On reload, all my explored map data I could sell is wiped. Is that supposed to happen? If so, newbies should know that happens.

I hadn't sold it yet because I didn't get 20 ly away yet.

yes, that is supposed to happen, if your ship is destroyed you lose EVERYTHING in it, cargo, scan data, combat bonds and bounties.

Yeah, some things in this game don't make sense. Losing cargo makes sense.

Losing scan data, combat bonds and bounties *since last port visited* might. Losing them all doesn't.

But ok.

Makes perfect sense. If this didn't happen you could explore out 20000 lyrs without docking and instead of the return journey you could just self destruct and be back to sell your data.

I agree that having your computer being space dust is rather difficult to read data from and in the current physics model, there is no FTL computer network - a fast ship is the quickest info can travel (assuming it doesn't blow up :) ).
HOWEVER, when I "respawn" - they know to the last bullet, how many I expended...

Bloody insurance companies.... ;)

No guys, it doesn't make sense. Note that I said in post #3 above that it makes sense to lose data stored *since last post visited*.

It implies we're too stupid to upload the scanned data to some main computer of ours when we visit each dock/port so that we have it when we're far enough along to sell it.

It's one little thing that doesn't make sense, but it's the way the devs want it. Fine. But please don't try to say it makes any kind of sense.

Erm... how did you run out of fuel before traveling 20LY? That's like 2 or 3 jumps max so I'm a bit confused here.

So you keep a server in every single port you dock at? Sounds expensive.

Are you trolling?

There's this thing call the internet. See, with the internet, you data doesn't have to be stored in location where you dock. It can be sent to where you have a place to store it. Or maybe the internet doesn't exist in the future.

I plotted a course that took me to 4 or 5 unexplored systems in a row. I figured that one out of the 5 would have a port to refuel in. I was wrong. I got to the fifth system, and still no place to dock. Yup. 5 systems in a row without a place to dock. Bad luck I guess.

I'll double down on that. When I started Elite I read about the Diso rare run and decided to do that first. Made it to Diso, bought all the rares, plotted to Nu 150LY away, made it halfway before running into a string of 5-6 systems without stations, had to self-destruct w/all the cargo. I started running with a fuel scoop after that :)

Yeah, a fuel scoop has crossed my mind early in the game. But I just can't see upgrading a Sidewinder with anything other than a seat cover. I mean, if you want one, you have to give up shields, a cargo hold, or a basic scanner. No.

I lucked upon a nice route shortly after my demise so I wasn't in a sidewinder long but I stripped it's weapons for jump range, took off the shields and discovery for cargo space, and put a fuel scoop on. Shields aren't necessary for doing cargo runs only, and the disco scanner is pretty useless unless you're gonna dedicate time to it. Basicly, if you're just going to be doing trading until you can afford new ships (which I recommend), you can easily ditch shield and disco.
I found a 1-jump 1kcr/ton profit run (which is pretty common) and quickly moved to a Cobra (60 cargo, no shields), then Type 6 (112 cargo, no shields), then an Eagle for fun, and a Viper. I skipped the Hauler, it's an unnecessary step if you have a decent run.

Yeah, I was doing BBS kill x number of pirates missions. I lucked out a couple times getting the last shot in on a random pirate, and got 20K bounties a couple times. I'm saving for a Cobra, and I'll keep the default Sidewinder until I buy it. I'm at 283K, so I'm well on my way. Once I get that, I'll trick it out and see what else there is to do.

Maybe I'm trolling a little bit, in fun. But seriously, the status of FTL communication is a little bit in doubt. If there were an interstellar Internet such as you seem to assume, then we wouldn't have to fly to another system to find out the prices there. For that matter, we wouldn't have to travel 20 ly to sell the Exploration Data—we'd just upload to to Universal Cartographics and done. On the other hand, GalNet seems to be able to update the entire inhabited sphere in real-time, and a Kill Warrant Scanner somehow discovers bounties posted a hundred light-years away.

My feeling is that the desire of the designers is that there is no FTL communication, but they ran into a rather serious programming dilemma when they tried to figure out how to model information dissemination in such a large environment. Heck, that's a pretty serious simulation job all by itself.

I believe this post answers your question.... the search function box would have brought up a selection of related threads

if you like it or not is not really a concern here... if you have suggestions please place a thread in the "Suggestions Section"

Thank you CMDR

move along nothing new to see folks !
