Newcomer / Intro Mining fragments disappearing

I am not 100% certain, but it seems like mining fragments are disappearing after a short while - can somebody confirm this?

The problem is that I usually mine an asteroid dry before I start scooping in the fragments, making the scooping easier and allowing for more pips on enginges for better maneuverability... The problem is that if my scooping doesn't go off smooth and fast, I seem to be missing some of the fragments which already started disappearing...

How do you handle this when mining?

yes, they decay after a time. when you target them it shows how many seconds left until they are gone.

blast less, scoop, blast some more, scoop... move to next 'roid...

I'm by far not a good miner( only done it a couple of times) But it is correct that the fractments are disappearing after a short while, and to my knowlegde it is the way it is suppose to happen...

The few times I tried out mining I only shot 1 asteroid at a time and then scooped up the pieces, and most of the times I got them all maybe lost a single one or two if unlucky... So I guess it just takes some practice to scoop up fast enough, so keep trying and sooner or later you'll get the hang of it I guess...

Anyway have fun out there Cmdr ;)

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll have to work on my mining strategy, at least on the more valuable asteroids... Loosing two fragments can already cost me 10-15k credits in the worst case! (Yes, I found quite a nice spot to mine...)

5 or 6 fragments is about the maximum you can scoop up before they start to vanish, and you have to be efficient. 4 fragments should be no problem. Clear an entire asteroid before you start to scoop and you'll lose a couple for sure.

Try to start with the one you blasted first and work backwards down the queue of fragments. It adds a few seconds.

They begin at 100% and seem to decrease by 1% per second (or every couple seconds.)

The best method I've come by so far, involves chewing off 5-8 pieces, while moving slowly off and behind, in the direction that the fragments move, aiming to position my ship to line them up like PacMan.

When in-line, I move very slowly to the first, closest piece, and slowly sneak up onto it. As soon as I grab that first piece, I throw the ship in reverse for just a split second, which moves the ship far enough to re-center and target the next one.
With practice, I'll harvest ~10 pieces in about 35-45 seconds, which is often enough to fully 'tap' an asteroid.

One fine fellow posted a youtube vid on mining. His technique is to mine the pole of the asteroid. That way the pieces break off and form a nice line for scooping.
