I said when I got my Oculus Rift I would post my thoughts on it as someone who's never tried one, but an avid gamer, and very impatient for the CV1
I'm posting this here and not in the VR forum (mods if you want to move it that's okay) because a number of people wanted to know from my "I'm joining the Oculus club" thread and i don't know if they visit the VR forum much..
Anyhow.. Ill try to stick to the points and keep it semi-short.. My System is a i7 3770k @ 4ghz, GFX 970 4GB Strix edition, 16GB ram.. Id say "upper mid range" for a PC now I guess?
After unboxing, setup took about 10 min. I was impatient and wanted to jump into ED quick, so I got the drivers installed, fiddled with their software a little and hopped straight into ED.. let me just say, this was incredible AND a mistake
Why a mistake?
I should have taken the time to correctly setup the rift. It certainly wasn't BAD, but after reading a little on it and the importance of setting your eye measurement right (with the built in utility) and trying the different lenses that come with it, I did manage to improve my experience.. I would highly recommend having more patients then me and set things up well first
Why was it incredible?
Well first, let me say, ED made jumping into the game with the rift EASY.. within minutes I switched the settings to use the rift and everything just worked.. I had to rebind my controls, but no biggie..
First experience/impressions
I need to say this.. you have NO idea how impressive Elite is until you see it through a rift. On my 27" 144hz monitor ED looks GREAT.. through the Rift, ED is spectacular!
On screen, stations look kinda big.. the ships are pretty, but ya know.. its just a screen.. even flying the t9 i didn't really feel it was HUGE.. it was a brick to fly sure but never was there a sense of "man, im practically flying a house!"
Put the rift on however, and no word of a lie.. its like your sitting in the cockpit of a ship. the numbers for the speed near your radar are "standing up" the radar blips are ACTUALLY under/over the radar plane, not just lines going up or down.. you look over your shoulder and you could whip out a tape measure and practically measure the distance between you and the window.. nothing is "flat"... On the platform of a station you look up and the walls just TOWER above you like a skyscraper... things feel MASSIVE.. just something that cannot be appreciated or even explained to someone seeing it through a regular monitor.. I would HIGHLY suggest at least TRYING ED on a rift if there is ANY way you can..
HOWEVER!!!
As much as I like the rift, I will say there are some flaws.. The "screen door" effect is not subtle. Yes you can read text in the game.. but not easily.. if you've played enough you know where things are so no big deal.. if your new to the game.. good luck with any of it.. Now its not particularity BAD and I wouldn't tell people its not worth it because aside from text, the game is GREAT while your flying. The "screen door" effect is not really that noticeable when not looking at text, and something your brain will filter out eventually.
The one thing i wanted to try to impress on anyone thinking about getting the rift, is this.. FD has done a FANTASTIC job at implementation. And if you have a flight-stick/throttle, it gets even better. I have a X52 Pro.. and it sits in exactly the same place as the controls in game.. with the rift on, no word of a lie, I look down and my arms are EXACTLY where they would be, and this is confusing.. WHY??! because my brain literally sees the arms in game and thinks "hey, i'm wearing gloves and long sleeves.. I should send those feelings to my arms/hands" and I literately get the sensation that I FELT I was wearing gloves for a few moments... and when the hands in-game move and "flex"; my brain is like " I didn't do that" and 1/2 a second later realize "oh yeah, that's not real"... its VERY CREEPY.. but REALLY AWESOME!
So, would I recommend it?
This is tricky.. I want to say yes, because it really is awesome.. and if you have an extra $350US sitting around and are a big gamer, its very much worth picking up if you have been thinking about it. BUT.. you NEED to pick it up, knowing that the resolution wont be flawless.. it will be one of those items that you use from time to time, see a demo, show friends. ect ect.. and.. likely sell off either a few months later, OR, pawn it to a friend and upgrade it when the CV1 comes out with its better screen.. I ordered mine on Monday, and it was in my hands Thursday noon, so VERY quick!
Motion Sickness.. I may have overdone it tonight as I got pretty sick after using it. I'm not normally affected by motion sickness, but I did spend 4 hours jumping from different demos and games with it the FIRST time i used it so its kind of my fault.. Im sure i will get used to the motion more and it wont bother me in a few weeks.
Remember: If you do get one, DON'T skip on the setup steps! Once i went through them and adjusted my eye measurements and changed out the cups a few times to see which ones are better, it did make quite a difference and looks better then the first time I went into ED.. Still not perfect, but im OKAY with that knowing im buying the unit "early" and this is not the consumer model.
The TL : DR version..
Personally Im very glad I got it even with the pending release sometime this/next year's CV1 model. I'm willing to look past the screen resolution and "screen door effect" it has right now to try it out, and will certainly be selling it, or pawning it to a friend when the CV1 comes out..
If however, you are tight on money, or just someone who is expecting a very crisp, clean, readable text experience in ED, then hold out for the CV1.. I would say the DK2 is, 80% perfect! the moment they double the resolution of the screen, they will have an AMAZING product..
And thats what i think!
