Just got my rift tonight...

I said when I got my Oculus Rift I would post my thoughts on it as someone who's never tried one, but an avid gamer, and very impatient for the CV1 :) I'm posting this here and not in the VR forum (mods if you want to move it that's okay) because a number of people wanted to know from my "I'm joining the Oculus club" thread and i don't know if they visit the VR forum much..

Anyhow.. Ill try to stick to the points and keep it semi-short.. My System is a i7 3770k @ 4ghz, GFX 970 4GB Strix edition, 16GB ram.. Id say "upper mid range" for a PC now I guess?

After unboxing, setup took about 10 min. I was impatient and wanted to jump into ED quick, so I got the drivers installed, fiddled with their software a little and hopped straight into ED.. let me just say, this was incredible AND a mistake :)

Why a mistake?
I should have taken the time to correctly setup the rift. It certainly wasn't BAD, but after reading a little on it and the importance of setting your eye measurement right (with the built in utility) and trying the different lenses that come with it, I did manage to improve my experience.. I would highly recommend having more patients then me and set things up well first :)

Why was it incredible?
Well first, let me say, ED made jumping into the game with the rift EASY.. within minutes I switched the settings to use the rift and everything just worked.. I had to rebind my controls, but no biggie..

First experience/impressions
I need to say this.. you have NO idea how impressive Elite is until you see it through a rift. On my 27" 144hz monitor ED looks GREAT.. through the Rift, ED is spectacular! :) On screen, stations look kinda big.. the ships are pretty, but ya know.. its just a screen.. even flying the t9 i didn't really feel it was HUGE.. it was a brick to fly sure but never was there a sense of "man, im practically flying a house!"

Put the rift on however, and no word of a lie.. its like your sitting in the cockpit of a ship. the numbers for the speed near your radar are "standing up" the radar blips are ACTUALLY under/over the radar plane, not just lines going up or down.. you look over your shoulder and you could whip out a tape measure and practically measure the distance between you and the window.. nothing is "flat"... On the platform of a station you look up and the walls just TOWER above you like a skyscraper... things feel MASSIVE.. just something that cannot be appreciated or even explained to someone seeing it through a regular monitor.. I would HIGHLY suggest at least TRYING ED on a rift if there is ANY way you can..

HOWEVER!!!
As much as I like the rift, I will say there are some flaws.. The "screen door" effect is not subtle. Yes you can read text in the game.. but not easily.. if you've played enough you know where things are so no big deal.. if your new to the game.. good luck with any of it.. Now its not particularity BAD and I wouldn't tell people its not worth it because aside from text, the game is GREAT while your flying. The "screen door" effect is not really that noticeable when not looking at text, and something your brain will filter out eventually.

The one thing i wanted to try to impress on anyone thinking about getting the rift, is this.. FD has done a FANTASTIC job at implementation. And if you have a flight-stick/throttle, it gets even better. I have a X52 Pro.. and it sits in exactly the same place as the controls in game.. with the rift on, no word of a lie, I look down and my arms are EXACTLY where they would be, and this is confusing.. WHY??! because my brain literally sees the arms in game and thinks "hey, i'm wearing gloves and long sleeves.. I should send those feelings to my arms/hands" and I literately get the sensation that I FELT I was wearing gloves for a few moments... and when the hands in-game move and "flex"; my brain is like " I didn't do that" and 1/2 a second later realize "oh yeah, that's not real"... its VERY CREEPY.. but REALLY AWESOME! :)

So, would I recommend it?
This is tricky.. I want to say yes, because it really is awesome.. and if you have an extra $350US sitting around and are a big gamer, its very much worth picking up if you have been thinking about it. BUT.. you NEED to pick it up, knowing that the resolution wont be flawless.. it will be one of those items that you use from time to time, see a demo, show friends. ect ect.. and.. likely sell off either a few months later, OR, pawn it to a friend and upgrade it when the CV1 comes out with its better screen.. I ordered mine on Monday, and it was in my hands Thursday noon, so VERY quick!

Motion Sickness.. I may have overdone it tonight as I got pretty sick after using it. I'm not normally affected by motion sickness, but I did spend 4 hours jumping from different demos and games with it the FIRST time i used it so its kind of my fault.. Im sure i will get used to the motion more and it wont bother me in a few weeks.

Remember: If you do get one, DON'T skip on the setup steps! Once i went through them and adjusted my eye measurements and changed out the cups a few times to see which ones are better, it did make quite a difference and looks better then the first time I went into ED.. Still not perfect, but im OKAY with that knowing im buying the unit "early" and this is not the consumer model.

The TL : DR version..

Personally Im very glad I got it even with the pending release sometime this/next year's CV1 model. I'm willing to look past the screen resolution and "screen door effect" it has right now to try it out, and will certainly be selling it, or pawning it to a friend when the CV1 comes out..

If however, you are tight on money, or just someone who is expecting a very crisp, clean, readable text experience in ED, then hold out for the CV1.. I would say the DK2 is, 80% perfect! the moment they double the resolution of the screen, they will have an AMAZING product..

And thats what i think!

Rift definitely looks amazing, however the main part I am skeptical about with it, is actually that you cannot interact with other screens or the real world without removing it, as such pen and paper stuff is difficult to do, or just using other programs to note traderoute stuff (heck notepad) to make traderoute stuff becomes troublesome.

Wish they would add a simple, low latency camera on the center so we could switch to a semi or fully transparent view without removing the rift itself.

Nice informative post +rep. Nice to see a review that is well balanced. I am still unsure about the rift as I am shortsighted, more in one eye than the other. Did you get a headache? general nausia? Did you look like a panda when you took it off?

I will be getting a retail rift when they release.

Seems like a waste of a cash for sub-par visual experience.

Even the CEO's of rift have gone on record and a said if your looking for quality then your not going to get it with the DK2, and you should hold out for the retail model.

Glad you enjoy it though.

True, it wont be for every game. While it would be amazing in DCS-A10, i have no clue how you could fly in that game, and be effective without looking at your keyboard for controls.. so very valid point..

however, you can kind of "see" if you look down.. the gap between the DK2 and your face isnt too bad to take a peek at your desk if you needed to.. might not work for everyone, so i would chalk it up on being very game specific.. if you are playing something that doesnt really need you to look at your controls/desk, then its great.. but certainly not a device you would want to take off every 5 min to do something else

Down sampling from a higher resolution makes a big difference to the text readability in the rift. I've got a 970 and have a custom resolution set (2560 x 1440) and that helps massively.

Excellent post. +1 rep. Just the kind of thing that interests me. I have a spare $350 but I will wait for CV1. As I understand it the screen door effect has been fixed on the release model.

+rep to OP for the enjoyable read. :)

I don't ever play ED without my DK2 - it's just not the same. OR has limitations, yes, but they're outweighed by the overall experience.

My "home made" rift :) ..+1 rep for pow.

Little motion sickness, but from what i read it goes away as you "get used to it" like you would on a boat after a while.. i wasnt running for the washroom, but after a few hours and it being my first experience after taking it off i did feel like "okay, that was enough for now"..

dont think I looked like a panda, but not sure ;)

My perscription is a -8 in each eye, so pretty blind really, however, I wear contacts and had zero problems adjusting to the rift.. you dont "focus" on anything infront of you, when your seeing something in the rift, its like its sitting 10 feet infront of you.. or, you know, whatever depth they want you to see it from..

There is a small program which is a movie theater and you can play any movie on your HDD you want.. and it ACTUALLY looks like a real theater.. the screen looks like your sitting back a good 50-70 feet from it at the back row just as it would if you were doing it for real.. etc.. so no eyestrain for me.. I did swap out the A cups to B cups however.. one is said to be for really nearsightes, and the other for "regular people".. but I couldnt tell the difference at all between them, so i went with the shorter lenses because i have long girly eyelashes apparently so they were touching the other lenses when i blinked even when they were set as far away from my face as it would allow. The swapped lenses are perfect now..

Deadly, But very fluffy...
Good post and agree, i was always keen and interested to hear about the rift from others here on the forums, but not being the technical kind of person was put off because it was a dev kit.

However after going to the ED launch and getting a chance to play on one of the rift kits there i was totally blown away on how different the game becomes graphically and game-play wise, it was amazing! had all the fun of looking around and taking in the graphics i hadn't seen or noticed before with just playing on a normal monitor....

..i probably was only on for ten minutes but what a ten minuters!(others waiting their turn) hooked on getting one, still gonna wait for commercial release(money factor) but i will have no hesitation on buying one.

in your case, unless when CV1 comes you can get customised lenses, then the answer for you will probably be contact lenses OR v small glasses to fit in the headset.

I find it interesting OP got nausea. it makes me wonder how he will go on with other games, as imo ED is one of the best examples of VR for NOT getting sick. Personally i have never had a headache even after hrs in the rift, indeed its easier on my eyes than me working on my pc on a monitor all day.

I do get "rift face" after using long term. it goes quite quick however the mask can leave a mark.

I will try this tomorrow. i read that in a few places,. just havent looked at doing it quite yet.. i was also using it as a secondary screen, and read its better to set my computer to use it as a primary.. tweeking will be this weekend. I also read a green hud is better, but i dont want to change mine as I dont want to loose the target friend/foe.. Hopefully FD will seperate these from the color spectrum of the hud soon...

He did say he'd been in other games and demos too - I kind of assumed he got the nausea from them. I've never had any issues with ED (since they took out all the "camera" movements) but have issues with pretty much every first person game/demo.

That's where VoiceAttack comes in!The real pain is not being able to write anything down... as ED doesn't have any trading tools or anywhere you can add notes to systems you've visited.Rifter.

Good post. Some extra's however.
Setting the HUD to green or yellow makes it a LOT more readable.
FDEV coulld've helped aleviate these problems a bit by making bended menu's for the Rift so tha all menu options are equaly close. I've seen this done in other Rift ggames and it works wonders.
But yes, it is utterly amazing and the size of stations and such is justt mind boggling. That said, the Rifft is not yet ready for prime time.

The green colours are definitely supposed to help but I've not bothered as its fine downsampled and I like keeping all the HUD colours as they are. I've got it set as the only screen and that makes a difference as well - I was able to step the quality up another notch. I'm not sure what ship you're flying at the moment but some of the cockpits are just incredible in the rift :)

Well, of course. The clue is in the name. "Developer Kit".

Yeah i think i mostly got sick from the demo where your squirl flying through the mountains.. I was in that for about 20 minutes and was feeling it afterwards.. not so much in ED specifically.. it didnt help that i followed the flying demo up with dreadhalls either... :)
