Federal Corvette

Does it look to anyone like those things highlighted in red, might move inwards during combat to cover the exposed bridge their in the center? It looks cool! If it did.

So since it is a corvette and basically a borne/bred warship and not a multipurpose ship, can we assume that this will be the most powerful combat ship, individually of course.

I was instantly gripped when I saw this in the letter, and man is it gonna be cool, I hope the Empire gets something similar.
And you might be right about the panels.

They will just nerf it a few weeks after it comes into game because pew pew pew pk squad will complain its way too powerful for them to solo, and as FD only seem to listen to them it will be nerfed and turned into a T9 lol.

Joking aside (if I am) a new ship would be nice, but also some of the old classics would be great as well.

every ship shouldn't be able to solo another ship. A fighter plane in world war 2 could not SOLO a destroyer. But anyway... if I have a corvette type craft, which has more armor, shields, weapons, and power...it should be able to (once piloted half away decent) beat anything else solo or DRIVE off its attacker. Not because you want to imbalance things but by its very nature a corvette is more powerful than a fighter in any lore.

So if you are going to stick with conventional navy classifications, the least you could do is stick to why vessels are classfied higher, which is because they have bigger displacement and are more powerful.

A corvette, or anaconda or python being able to beat a fighter one on one isn't over powered...its normal. The resources it takes to construct a larger ship, you could construct several fighters for, and there is your balance. So if Navy 1 constructs a python, and for the same price and resources Navy 2 constructs 3 fighters, then yes I expect the three fighters to beat the python.

But the python or other bigger ship, punch for punch blow for blow is individually more superior than any fighter. I can understand nerfing the pythons maneuverability if it is bigger, but nerfing its shields etc...went too far.

So all multipurpose ships or corvettes are for, is cool to look at but functionally inept.

It looks like a frigate, and Cruis.in I think those do move but the open the doors for the small ships to crawl out of and attack. I don't think we will see this for a while as the fer de lance hasn't been added yet. I'm guessing also you have to have a descent Federal Rank to pilot it.

Pearl Harbour tells you all you need to know about how good planes were against ships. There is also the British Swordfish planes (I may be wrong) that crippled a nice big German battle ship. If used effectively a small ship or craft can be very effective against bigger ships and crafts. The examples are endless, but the weapons do make a difference.

I get where you are coming from with shields and that, but nothing we say will change FDev's minds. I hope this new ship is as good as they say. I still think they should bring in the other old ships which were in the other 3 versions of Elite. Some of the cargo ships were massive.

I don't care what it does ... it's beautiful and looks like a warship. Now FD get me a torpedo bomber ship please. Something slow worthless as a fighter, armored with some defensive weaponry that carry 2 giganormous torpedoes :D

Imagine if this was one of the five ships that beta players could choose one of....mmmm... it'd be a no brainer.

I seriously doubt FD would make such a mistake.

if you look back during the patches. There was a imperial bomber so imagine thre condor will have a bomber variant.

That being said, i wonder if this will be able to carry a snub fighter.. (condor )

In 1940 the British Mediterranean fleet attacked a significant portion of the Italian fleet docked in Tarranto harbour with 12 torpedo armed swordfish biplanes - 1 battleship was sunk and 2 badly damaged for the loss of 2 planes.

Something worth playing the Federals for, it seems. I like the meaty look to it. It looks like it can take a beating and hopefully deal one itself.

... A fighter plane in world war 2 could not SOLO a destroyer....

Here is an account of a P-47 sinking an Ariete class torpedo destroyer from the pilot's son.

"My father and Wendell Pruitt were returning from an escort when they came out of a fog bank and the destroyer was in front of them. They were in deep--they couldn't go over the boat and expose their bellies. They couldn't bank around the boat and expose their bellies. They were also low on fuel, which is why they were flying low. Their best chance was to open up and try to cause confusion on deck and then run like hell. They opened up, and Dad's gun camera (I've seen the film) shows his tracers hitting the water, walking up the side of the boat, and then going in an open hatch--which he thought was strange since boats under attack were supposed to secure all openings. The rounds went in the hatch, and the ship blew up. He always said his first thought was that he had to get around/over the explosion.
It is a fair guess to say that he hit the magazine--unless there was something else more unstable on the vessel."

Holy cow Batman. Now that is a ship and a half. After jokingly having a poke at the comparative ugliness of the Dropship Vs the Clipper, I think FD have delivered a thing of beauty to the Federal players. Awesome. Just awesome.

IIRC new ships coming with 1.2.
I have not read any announcement, only speculations.
Though there are no new ships in 1.1beta, FD might throw them in last minute.

About size speculations:
A Corvette is a rather small ship, in the wiki it is also called Cutter. In the books Imperial Cutter is used often. Either, there will be an Imperial Cutter/Corvette or that one is actually the Imperial clipper.

Hence, the Federal Corvette might be between Imperial Clipper and Anaconda, maybe Python sized and prized.
This would be cool, as the Python lost its role as best fighting ship and the Corvette might fill the gap...
