Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

So I'm putting this here because this was the first time I was attacked/robbed by another player and I felt a bit noobish. If that was you, congrats, but that's all you'll get from me :)

It made me think though, if you're focusing on trading, what is the point of playing in the open version of the game? The added risk doesn't seem to have any accompanying reward as I've switched to solo mode and I make the same profit on my runs.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

the risk is the reward, the AI can be a little too predictable for many peoples taste and there is nothing like the buzz you get from turning the tables on a human pirate and watching as their ship turns into a fireball ;)

I mainly trade and I do it in Open.
The accompanying reward? That depends. If all you are concerned with is grinding your way to the next ship then maybe playing Open doesn't make sense and by all means play Solo.
Personally I've enjoyed almost every single interaction that I've had with other CMDRs in the game. I had a great conversation with the CMDR of a Clipper a few weeks ago. We were just sitting at the same star scooping fuel. He had a real crappy fuel scoop and it was taking him forever so we passed the time in conversation.
On a few occasions I've been "pirated" by other CMDRs. Two of those the guys were just bored and didn't actually take anything. The third time the guy asked for 10 tons of cargo and I let him have it. Gotta dig the videos of those up and stick them on YouTube at some point.
The extra danger that other player potentially pose adds a level of excitement to the game. For me at least. You'll have to decide if the extra excitement is worth it for you. Lots of folks try and guilt people into playing Open. Don't let them. Choose what works for you.

I have been playing in Mobius for the last month and I would recommend all traders to play either solo or Mobius if you are trading.

Yeah... Mobius is always an option if you don't want to risk losing your ship in combat to a player but still want some level of interaction with other players.

Why open play? Why open play?

First griefers, wich is fine. They exsists in every MP ever made.
And now we have hackers here and there, can only assume there will be more.
So im left thinking, why be in open play at all atm?
I speak for myself here ofcourse. Im a T6 trader, only reason i would be in MP is to get that little sense of activity when i see another player.
Most of the time people say hello and we chat. As long as my messages get through. Wich somehow, most of the time they dont.
And i kinda like the idea of getting interdicted and robbed by another player. But now that i've given it some thought...
Would i willingly go out with palladium worth of 1.4 mil JUST to possibly get interdicted, robbed and most likely killed, just for the excitment?
Its not like i can do anything!? Cant call for help, AI security cant help, friends cant help and i cant defend myself, (As is.)
So im basically setting myself up to getting robbed or killed by playing in MP. To what end? For a laugh? For the thrills? Self-torture?
So reading some posts about rampant hacking over the past few days and watching videos where weird stuff happens.
I've decided that i'll go to Solo play until there are any GOOD reasons to be in open play.

See you out there Commanders... actually... no. I wont be seeing you out there. :p

Because Open play needs legit players to report the hackers, we're the majority...fleeing to solo solves nothing, there's no magical anti-cheat.

The best anti-cheat is a good community.

As for griefers, well..some of us don't care about dealing with psychos. For some of us when nothing can go wrong there is no fun in watching the credits go up.

Defintely this. As much as there are bad people out there, the majority of people in open are OK.

A sweeping general statement? Perhaps, but haxxers and griefers will always be in a minority, it's just that their actions are reported more and they seem more prevalent than they are.

Open play lay as a trader makes any boring run exciting as you have to fly smart ALL the time.

find super cruise boring? In open you have real cmdrs to avoid - you have to plan your route.

So so much money you have lost all challenge? Work out how to best fit your trader with the right modules to avoid or escape interdictions.

For me, this is the excitement of trading in open play - I don't mean to judge (I am definitely judging you) but I am a better player than ANY solo only player because of this.

If you limit your challenge, don't expect to get any better or to enjoy yourself as long.

Becasue reporting hackers have worked since?
Im just trying to enjoy the game. Thats all. And in solo, i can. Dont have to worry about godlike commanders and general psychos that kill you just for being there.
Its kinda like Dayz. You have 3 options when it comes to player to player communication.

1. You can chat. (In this game only sometimes atm.)
2. You can pick up the same items as other players.
3. Most of the other players have guns.

And when saying hello just isnt fun enough. What do you think is going to happen? :)
I'll stay in solo until i hear that ANY commander have been caught and banned for cheating or when any measurement against cheating that work have been implemented.
Good luck to you guys though reporting those scumbags.

open play, because the game (at this point) is pretty boring after your first few days of learning how to fly and fight. I am still holding out hope that they will start to create a living breathing universe but it seems (as the review said) " Like the brand of liberalism which influenced its universe" we may be SOL I hope they can pull it together and give us something we are talking about 30 years from now but time is running out. At best they have this year to show us a game and not a frame work

Try the "Mobius" private group, no morons but plenty of other commanders.

Problem with Mobius is that whenever you do something other than trading, you open yourself up to trouble. Mobius really only works out if you're a pure trader, but if you pirate AI ships and other CMDR scoop your cargo away, you can't do anything about that. if you bounty hunt and someone Killsteals you, you can't do anything about it.

AI will never give you even a chance of a living persistent universe. Thats why I went to open, hoping to see just that. Good and the bad.

Problem really is, multiplayer is undeveloped. It lacks some of the most basic features that would make it easy to group, coop, chat with all players in the system in which you reside...etc. So unfinished that they removed any mention of "massively multiplayer online" from the front page of their website. We'll see in March what Wings brings. Hopefully something substantive, because multiplayer is the reason I purchased this title.

Traders, well..they will go the path of least resistance. Their thirst for credits are as strong as a pirates. Must be because they will occupy the same chum filled waters like Lave, etc, and act surprised when they find the sharks are there as well.

When Frontier finally gets off their backside and DOES something like the mentioned wings we may not have to worry about kill steals and we all get a portion of the bounty. Though at the moment I am skeptical since the latest beta of 1.1 isn't looking very promising. The got my 50, but they won't get anymore until I see some results.

Heh, going to solo solves a lot of things actually...

There will never be a living, persistent universe with this game. It's fundamentally not designed for it due to the lack of a dedicated server.

I'm hoping my game is broken because my travels have only found me one other commander on Mobius, and he didn't respond (couldn't even find the friend I was coordinating with though)

There is no point to be in open mode. Why do I want to be griefed? For gameplay reasons? Seriously? Why do I want to undock with a trading ship just to have some guy take my cagro? Is this how we determine its a fun game? To be robbed? If the game (and I use this term loosely) had some ACTUAL content other than trading to make a reasonable amount of credits to do the other things then maybe there would be a reason to go to open. Though since most pvp is done with throw away ships (Viper, Cobra, Eagle) why bother taking a larger, slower and easier to hit ship out? Shields are stupid weak and hull damage is stupid expensive to repair. So most fights with large ships end up with them running away after the brief time they might be able to engage. And forget engaging in a Anaconda. That ship is so easy to hit. so you will possibly take millions in damage before you even get a chance to hit a smaller, faster craft.

My reply is all about the OP, he is a trader, so no problems there for him.

I miss the point of this post?
...is it something like, "Why is there an open play option? Because I only like the solo play option? ...because there are bad people in the world."

Is that it? I guess thankfully, you can play solo.

There seems to be some debate over this point. Is anyone here technically knowledgeable enough to elaborate clearly on why this may be so?
