DETAILED DK2 SETUP

Good stuff. Took a while to find (though I knew I'd seen it and knew it was started by a dev) so was surprised it wasn't a stickie to begin with. :)
The tool by SMACK332 does the same thing for you in case you don't want to edit the file yourself it works the same just more user friendly. you can find the link in the OP
:)

I'm able to get the rift working, but I find that my eyes get very tired, very quickly and that the text is fuzzy and unreadable. I have to lean in quite far to be able to read any text on the screen. I have my hud colors changed and the issue persists. Not sure if it's an issue with the configuration of the rift or what...but I'm using vanilla settings with the eye pieces extended all the way out.

Maybe it's a screen res thing, but I play on my 55 inch plasma at 1080p and, while the rift DK2 is technically 1080p, it doesn't come close to being sharp. I also have that screen door effect where I can see the individual pixels (even with the eye pieces all the way extended).

Frame rates aren't a problem, the fuzzy text is my biggest issue.

Do you wear glasses?
You should adjust the eye pieces to where they are as close to your eyes as is comfortable.
Have you completed the DK2 advanced setup? (To configure your IPD)
Have you followed all the instructions in the OP and if you just received your DK2 did you check the link in the OP by
Tom Forsyth tinyurl.com/nehkpv4 it goes into more detail about first time DK2 setup.
There will always be some screen door effect on the DK2 when the CV1 comes out that should be completely gone but with the Development Kit 2 its something that will always be there. That being said after playing for a few minutes I don't really even notice it unless i'm looking for it.

I don't wear glasses. My issue is that my eyes seem to focus on the pixels themselves as I can see them clearly - and the screen door effect is what is making text very difficult to read (unless I lean in REALLY far).

I did the advanced setup, but perhaps I did it incorrectly. It would be great if there were some YouTube videos on how to set up your DK2. (I'm going to look around YouTube after I post this reply)

I hadn't seen this documentation, so I will DEFINITELY run through it as soon as I get home from work today. tinyurl.com/nehkpv4

I've just installed 1.05 update and its messed all my settings for my rift i can't get 1920x1080 where i could before...... help, plus i'm using nvidia 344.75 display drivers......

Hi basically I've tried everything and none of it works. half the time ED doesn't even give me the option of selecting the OR in the first place... I can't get the catalyst to select options for the OR. it says the OR is there but I can't change the settings at all on it i.e. the refresh rate for the screen. please help! :)

Make sure the rift is set to extended mode and that youre running 0.4.4 Oculus runtime, or elite won't work with it.

0.4.4 runtime is important!

Make sure the rift is set to extended mode and that youre running 0.4.4 Oculus runtime, or elite won't work with it.

This, this this, a million times THIS! I've been fighting with my DK2 and Elite for two months now, trying to get it to recognize my Oculus. It never did; the 3d option only ever displayed Side-by-Side and Anaglyph, nothing else.

I checked everything until I saw this post and finally noticed I was still on 0.4.3 runtime. I upgraded to 0.4.4 and Elite recognized my Oculus and the game is now one thousand times better!

Sorry for the gushing post, I'm feeling a little giddy right now... woohoo it works!

Rick_Black, I recommend you make this a point in your setup; make sure you have 0.4.4 runtime. I'm off to go play Elite now. :)

I'd taken a near one month break from playing Elite in the Rift due to the annoying framerate drop/judder in supercruise bug... but also to reinvigorate the sense of wonder when I tried it again.. and got foiled by the new runtime-requirement just the other day when I returned.. so it was fresh in my mind :D

Well I do say to make sure your OR driver is up to date but I will make it more clear. I'm glad you were finally able to get it running :)

Hi,

Boot into Windows.
Set Rift to Extended Mode.
Launch Nvidia Control Panel.
Set or ensure the refresh rate of the Rift is 75 Hz. (will default to 120Hz.)
Close Nvidia Control Panel.
Double Click the ED Launcher shortcut.
Set the DK2 as the Primary Monitor via Windows Screen Preferences.
Click Play in the ED Launcher.
Goto Options > Graphics and ensure the settings are correct.

Most important settings are 3dRiftMode - headset or speakers
75Hz refresh
VSync ON

i7 4000 series
2x 760 in SLI
MSI Gaming Mobo

The game and the monitor settings have to match. If you can run at 120hz (that means 120fps, rendered twice in the same frame) then go for it! 120hz is the Rift's native refresh rate.

The reason it's pushed down to 75hz to activate low persistence is that most people's systems can't handle 120hz.

When I set the oculus to extended mode I have to turn and face the right instead of straight ahead to look at the center of the game in the oculus, when I put the rift on is there something I need to do to make the center straight ahead as if i was still looking at my monitor in front of me?

F12 may crash you back to the desktop at the moment if you go to center your view, if it does you can always go into the options panel & select control settings and re-map the F12 key to another of your choice

From what i remember it's quite far down the list

I found running my resolution 948 X 1080 with the ATI 7980 at 120 hz. the latency was better the text was more clear. Also thanks for the tutorial, I got my DK2 today and had it up and running in 40mins. from unboxing to playing the game.
