Newcomer / Intro FSD Failure/ Overload?

Had a new one last night; I'm afraid I didn't video so please bear with me.

Flying normally in supercruise, when all of a sudden a warning flashes up "FSD Failure", the ship changed course and immediately fell out of cruise and came to a dead stop very quickly. Tried the throttle or any flight manoeuvring controls (roll, pitch or yaw), absolutely nothing. The FSD cooldown completed, still no operational controls - but the hardpoints still deployed, guns worked, no problem.

After 10 minutes of swearing and trying everything I could find, logged the game in case it was a bug, came back on - still in the same place and no movement.

Finally, I noticed on the 'Module' screen that although all the modules were 99-100% healthy, the thrusters selection box (shown in the pic I've shamelessly stolen from t'internet) had been unchecked during the apparent 'FSD' failure. I clicked into the box and hey presto - the whole thing starts flying again as normal! Newbie that I am, I didn't even know you could turn off the thrusters independently

Bug? Intentional? Dunno, but as I was on the verge of self destructing so I thought I'd pass on the solution in case somebody else falls foul.....

The FSD can fail if it takes damage, it will cut out, or may not charge the first time. You will see a fault warning pop up on the info display. As far as I'm aware this only happens when it is damaged. Have never seen a fault with 100%, flying since early Beta. Thrusters have never been tripped offline either.

Hm maybe you should look after repairs at the next station. There are TWO repair stats.

Not sure what you mean here; the FSD was at 99% health in the module screen (not as shown on the pic), is there another indicator I should be looking at?

This was my understanding too; which is why I thought I'd post here as the thrusters going offline due to an FSD fail message is likely to confuse anyone :)

I've just read the Elite Manual , searched for words like "fsd, modules, failure". Occasional module failures happen. Since 99% is not 100%, there is some small chance that malfunction will occur as it happened here. All the modules in game suffer from mechanical fatigue and this was how to say, a normal thing.

Two words: Ship Integrity.

Click on the Repairs Screen, when docked. Look at the top right line that says "Ship Integrity". Try not to faint at the price. Pay it.

I guess that's possible, but I've never seen it. Since I use my Asp for exploring I never pay Ship Integrity, it costs more to repair than I make in profits. At some point I'll probably repair it by blowing it up.

Its right.

Your ship may be 100% repaired but your parts degrade over time and with use. The integrity of your parts decreased with every use.

You need to service the parts now and again and it costs a whole lot of extra credits.

It's like my car may be in full working order (100%) but who's to say my gearbox doesn't completely fail tomorrow? (1% integrity)

Thanks for all the feedback; I'll check out the ship integrity tonight - although as it's less than a week old, and not a 1978 Escort Mk2 with 240k on the clock, I'm hoping it won't be too bad.... ;)
