Elite / Frontier Worst Version of Elite

Out of the four versions of Elite I've played, best to last.

  1. Amiga Elite - Solid graphics, visible docking bays, All the 'snake' ships, Wolk Mk II
  2. BBC Elite - Disk Version - Visible docking bays, All the 'Snake' ships
  3. C64 Elite - All the Snake Ships
  4. Spectrum Elite - Part of the 'Snake' ships.

Mind you Spectrum Elite was still better than any other Spectrum game out there and there wasn't really a competitor until Federation of Free traders (or was there an earlier one?)

All the non-Newtonian ones, of course.

FE2 was the worst one for me.

Played the original to death on the BBC, Archimedes and the PC and also got quite far in FFE.

I persevered with FE2 but never really got to grips with the flight model.

What is it with you people not bothering to learn how to play the game and then complaining that *the game* sucks?

No, John.
You are the suck.

I got to at least Dangerous on both games (FE2 and FFE) so give me a break and go and have a pop at someone else.

Worst for me has to be FFE because of all the bugs. I was so disappointed by it at the time.

Best was the BBC version, because it was the first and so was the largest step forward.

But that doesn't mean anything.

Even discounting obvious exploits (install mining laser, line-up phobos, set stardreamer and weigh the fire key down with something) pirates were easy to kill even if you were clueless about flying and jousted around in set speed mode, and if you couldn't accomplish even that, doing enough milkruns to afford a big ship with a lot of shield generators allowed you to rack up kills by simply letting enemies crash into you.
Seriously, combat in FE2 is easy - I once cleared the entire police force of Ross 154 with only a Viper with busted main thruster.

FFE was quite a bit harder, but the big ship part still applied (at least the nigh-invulnerability part).

Why do you think I cannot fly a ship in FE2 or FFE. I can do it without the jousting, why do you assume I cannot?

I spent a long time playing the game. You are being arrogant if you think that just because I prefer combat in the original Elite I did not learn at least the basics of Newtonian flight.

This is a subjective thing, all I have said is that I did not enjoy combat in that game that much and preferred the original game. You prefer Newtonian and I do not, that is all.

I had half a mind to load up the game and put footage on YouTube to demonstrate my point but have too much going on at the moment.

Because you specifically mentioned flight model.

FFE has pretty much the same flight model, except it has broken frame of reference switching and switches to full manual automatically during combat.
It also has automatic maneuver assist of sorts (thrusters firing on their own) but it's more pain than help, TBH.

Please lets keep civil everyone. Some posts are starting to be a little....."over zealous" shall we say ?

Thank you for your cooperation everyone. :) We're all friends here.

For what it's worth I agree the AI on the combat had........issues.

Desperately seeking a thread that hasn't degenerated into an argument about newtonian flight physics.

If you find one please PM me.

As Styggron posted earlier, please keep it civil guys, banter is fine but we've noticed a hint of sarcasm has started to creep in which can soon escalate.

Thanks everyone,
