Newcomer / Intro Type 7 weapons loadout for trader

Fuel Scoops and Trade Optim

i don't think any transport needs a bds... I prefer to have a fuel sccop and scoop some fuel to keep fuel costs down... just a thought

Fuel Scoops are a great idea! I have noticed this the more I climb up the big ship ladder...

I have since this time, been flying an Orca until it's fuel costs became noticeably effecting my trade profit. I didn't notice it as much with the Lakon-7, "but it was there too", I just didn't think of it as much because of the great cargo capacity the Type-7 had. Yet with the Orca, and without the added cr$ of any passengers, fuel costs did catch my attention.

After selling the Orca, I dropped down to an ASP and expanded my known trade routes while saving for a Python for it's cargo capacity.

Here's a good Python starter layout, "but add another 10 mil cr to that price before buying, or you will not have enough for cargo, insurance and "big added fuel costs"!

This fuel need as Commander ANDYRAPTOR points out, is something to be thinking about "without a doubt"!
That's why my new Python layout dropped one of the class 5 internal slots, for an B-5 Fuel Scoop to be included.

My first encounter with large fuel scoops was while I was exploring in the ASP. I had equipped an A-6 Fuel Scoop and found that scooping was far more easy and much faster than with smaller scoops, yet also saved me from allot of heat damage as well while scooping.

Well said Commander ANDYRAPTOR!

In my Type 6 I actually killed a pirate who became so focused on staying behind me while I pulled away to "run" that by the time he realized he was flying through a paired stream of proximity mines it was too late. :D

I was, however, also dropping chaff and did need to use a shield cell (though if anything I think my nearly-dropped shields actually contributed to his myopia). Fortunately, the bounty covered the cost of resupply and still left me with enough to enjoy a beer when I reached my destination.

Agreed. I have an A2 fuel scoop on my Clipper no BDS (mostly because I traveled 80 LY into Imperial space to get it and some do some trading). I use it when I'm not in too much of a hurry and it does keep costs down. Although on trip back to Fed space I swapped in an Advanced Discovery Scanner for a cargo rack just to collect some data and swapped it back out for trading when I arrived.

I really liked my Type 6 - could outrun anything interdicting me. I never thought about the mines - could've been fun ;)

Mines

So, upgraded to the Type 7 from Type 6. In type 6 I could always run from NPC. Not having the same luck in Type 7. Any suggestions on weapons or loadout to fight if I have to? Running 212 cargo and A4 shied generator, but doesn't seem to hold up. Would prefer not to give up cargo for shield bank. Have Chaff, point defense, 1 turreted pulse lasers in front (don't seem to help) and two turreted cannons top and bottom (don't seem to help when running). Mines and missiles? For the record, I have an Asp for combat fun and do pretty well - the Type 7 can't avoid an interdiction and cant seem to run very well.

Thanks.

This thread is all about the Lakon Type-7 and it's load-outs, "Yet when we are investing in ever more cargo capacity ships and their trade, we are also talking about what our trade ships can do for themselves"...
So I enjoy all the other Commanders here chiming in with their own experiences when it comes to trade ships, because they all share many things in common.

This is an interesting comment you made Commander Nounverber
This is the very first time I have heard any Pilot mention Mines as being useful, or having any effect at all on another ship. Maybe through these few latest update patches, there's been some unseen changes that caused Mines to be useful? I don't know... "but I'd like to find out" :) There's some YouTube on Mines, but it's old and shows the Mines having almost no effect at all. Maybe it's possible that the pursuing ship was an NPC with no shields and standard paper armor. If they have changed, I may add some to my new Python.

I had purchased a Python before, upgrading from a Lakon Type-7, and found that I had bitten off much more than I could afford to have it fitted as a trade ship. I downgraded the Power Plant to a class 4, (which resulted in it's first voyage's fuel bill being over 44,000cr, "one way" (no joke) and had no Fuel Scoop at all. That's what caused me to dump my first Python and retreat all the way back to an ASP. I just didn't have the cr Cash I needed, going into it with only around 67mil.
I saved up 73mil this time and fitted a Python out with this configuration;
http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=305,7u57u54yH7u57u50Wg0mI,2-8SA07_6u8SA08I,0AA0AA0AA08c08c0727Q405U03w
yet this I soon found out had no ability to "thrust" at all because of energy capacitor limits, and Thrusters are all any trade ship has for defense when unarmed... arming a trade ship only makes a drain on power and also doesn't do anything to make any attacker divert from their purpose... unless you can kill them.
So, I went directly back into the station and remade my configuration like this;
http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=305,mpX0mI0mI0mI0mI,2-BkA07_72BQAA8I,0AA0AA0AA07250e0727Pc05U0nE
I included a Docking Computer as well as a Fuel Scoop and upgraded Shields and Power Distributor. The reasons for those changes, is that "every NPC ship in the world has been showing up coming into the space dock as I have been trying to leave it (in Solo). It's as if they know that I have only insurance cr left and lousy shields". But the ship now can use it's Thrusters because of the increased Power Distributor.

I guess what I'm trying to say in all this is... "Stay in the Lakon Type-7 until you have at least 20mil over what any larger ship may cost"...

Maybe 40mil over when upgrading to a Type-9... "I don't know" :p

"But the inclusion of a good Fuel Scoop was a great idea!"

None of the replies asked the two most crucial question: 1) Are you playing in Open Play or Solo? 2) Do you plan to fight back or not?

Question 1 is because most NPCs can be dispelled with a healthy amount of lasers. In fact two of any class-1 lasers could easily fight against NPC pirates up to Cobra. Player pirates is another story. Before 1.1 the only effective way against player pirates is by vomiting seeker missiles, but now since missiles vs shields have been nerfed, laser becomes the only option.

And question 2 is because, there's no "defensive" weapon loadouts for a cargo ship (except for pooping a bunch of mines and run). You either properly fight back or run like hell, and your weapon loadouts (or the lack thereof) totally depends on your choice.

So, I'm gonna assume you play in Open and wants to fight back, because that's what I did. Here's the loadout:

[Type-7 Transport]
S: 1G/G Burst Laser
S: 1G/G Burst Laser
S: 1G/G Burst Laser
S: 1G/G Burst Laser
U: 0I Point Defence
U: 0I Chaff Launcher
U: 0I Heat Sink Launcher
U: 0I Heat Sink Launcher

BH: 1I Lightweight Alloy
RB: 4C Power Plant
TM: 5D Thrusters
FH: 5A Frame Shift Drive
EC: 4D Life Support
PC: 3A Power Distributor
SS: 3D Sensors
FS: 5C Fuel Tank (Capacity: 32)

6: 6E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 64)
6: 6E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 64)
5: 5E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 32)
5: 5E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 32)
4: 4D Shield Generator
4: 4A Fuel Scoop
2: 2A Shield Cell Bank
2: 2E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 4)

Just remember to set Fuel Scoop to power grouping 2, so you would not run out of power when deploying weapons.

There's a maneuvering associated to this loadout too: after being pulled out of supercruise, set full power to engine, full-throttle and boost ahead. Then, reset power to 2+ system and 4+ weapons, turn off flight-assist and pitch 180-degree - chance is now the pirate is right behind you. Since Type-7 is so heavy, it turns very slowly and vector controlling becomes relatively. Then just deploy the weapon and open fire, let gimbal do the work. Of course the bane to the loadout is chaff, so if it's a player pirate with chaff chasing you, just turn around and run.

Also, in case you haven't realize already, T7 has a crippling heat problem, which is why I shoved two heatsinks in there.

@Space Time, my thoughts on mines are this: if I'm trying to escape, my hope is that "most" pursuers would change vectors, even slightly, when their shields start taking damage, and that anything that keeps the business end of a pirate's ship pointed away from me buys me time to get away. In fact, the mines themselves shouldn't be a threat for someone with even a rudimentary situational awareness. But the way I see it, a pirate would much rather chase down an unarmed trader than one who is bristling with defenses. For me, the tradeoff is easy and I'll always attempt to bloody the nose of any attacker, even if I end up as space dust... mostly because I assume I'll end up space dust anyway. ;)
