Two new ships in 1.2

Update 1.2 will also contain two new playable ships – there will be more information on these in coming newsletters. These are two of our originally planned ships so aren’t part of the five additional ships mentioned in a previous newsletter.

So release 1.2 will bring us two new playable ships. That's great! But which two ships will it be? I assume we'll be told in the newsletter tomorrow or next week, but let's have some fun and pay detective!

We know the first will be the Federal Corvette, which has been announced for release 1.2 in newsletter #61:

The largest player-piloted Federal ship in Elite: Dangerous: the Core Dynamics Corvette

But what will be the second ship? Is it going to be the Vulture, which has already been described a little bit by Mike Evans:

The vulture is going to be the dedicated heavy fighter (literally it's not going to be very good at anything else but shooting and flying) where as the Python is supposed to be more of a gun ship/heavy weapons platform.

Or will it be the Fer de Lance, which has been revealed in newsletter #57:

Fer-de-Lance (Concept Art)

Another interesting tidbit from Michael's Dev Update is that the new ships are two of their originally planned ships. So have all three ships - the Vulture, the Fer de Lance and the Federal Corvette - been planned from the beginning? I can't find anything about that, but perhaps someone else can. I have the felling that the Vulture hasn't been mentioned before Mike Evans' statement, so perhaps it's going to be the other two?

What are your guesses and are there any other clues on what we we might get?

I'm hoping the latter two, they could be more aimed at the mid-level so within reach a little easier. The Corvette is beyond Anaconda money surely and that's a serious investment. Interesting to read the Python's description now that it's been reduced to an armed trader type ship rather than a "heavy weapons platform"....seems the Vulture may become what the Python was pre 1.1

I really wish they wouldnt give out the Corvette yet. And instead add more ships in the Clipper to Python range while putting more focus towards bettering the aspects of the game that have nothing to do with trading.

Could well be an Imperial ship due to the Fedral ship being included now.

It would make sense! ;)

Perhaps the Imperial Courier? If this is indeed the right concept art for the courier, that would be awesome (although the wiki hasn't always been correct with the name-concept-art-mappings [Fer-de-lance-Federal-corvette-confusion])

I would expect them to be a Vulture and Fer de Lance as these were revealed much earlier than a Federal Corvette. That would be my lucky guess.

I hope you are right. The imperials are really getting the short end of the stick in ED. I would love to see a few more typical imperial designs, although I am very curious about the Vulture and Fer-de-Lance too.

Nothing wrong with dangling the biggest ships. Big ships come with obvious drawbacks that will make them not something a player can just roll around and wreck any other player. They'll be relatively slow, require _vast_ amounts of credits to arm and maintain. It'll really end up being more of a ship that requires a cooperation amongst multiple players to support. And of course, it would draw serious attention from other players who will want to gang up on it to blow it up. So I wouldn't be too worried about anyone getting a corvette before you.

Now what would be interesting is post 1.2 when you have a vette with a flightgroup escorting come against another vette with a flightgroup. Both corvettes hammering eachother with cap-ship weapons while the flight groups tangle. That would be fun to be in.

EDIT: I would like to see some non-fed and non-imp type ships. Like maybe an alliance ship. Or perhaps some more mobile carriers acting as ad-hoc stations for independents / pirates / mafia in systems. Not jumping around to other systems like jacque's but just large re-purposed capital ships that orbit a planet or can sometimes be found in USS's that you can request docking permission with and dock but aren't considered official stations in the system.

I really reckon the Vulture will be one of them as one of the devs (sorry I forget who it was) posted a lot of data on it a few weeks ago, they had all the hardpoints and slots classes etc so that sounds fairly nailed down.

I'd like to see the fer de lance too

I'm really hoping the Vulture is one of the ships, progression for me as a fighter was Viper to Python so I had to trade a lot in the middle... wouldn't mind selling the Python though for a very expensive fighter!

I'm hoping for the latter two mainly because I wont rank up with the feds - just doesn't feel right to have a rank in both navies although that Corvette does look pretty and might make me reconsider.

Mike Evans has been very specific considering the Vultures specs, so it seems to be in a pretty advanced development stage (although I'm not that interested - the game is in dire need of combat ships beyond the Viper, but large or not - two hardpoints don't really allow for much creativity when it comes to outfitting).

The FDL sure looks interesting.
