In game browser.

ED is not a game which needs 100% of your attention all the time, so why not have an in game internet browser?

Sure you can use your other monitor to search the web while in SC for example, but what if you have only one monitor and other reasons i couldn't think of.
To not break the immersion, lets say that the ''internet'' in our ships is a downloaded library of our current world wide web.

If someone is worrying about the additional weight, no worries our interwebs currently weighs the same as a nice juicy strawberry.

There's actually a trade app here on the forums that does so IN GAME with some weird magic. Could do a similar thing with a web browser.

I just alt-tab though in borderless mode.

if my experience with steam is anything to go by, those things are extremely slow if not downright laggy.

I use Steam Overlay for a browser and my E: D Google Doc notes, since receiving advice on this forum, and it's all been faultless for me so far.

Steam overlay can be made to work, same with OverWolf (advantages of overwolf is - no steam, and no ads, but it's not so "smooth" as Steam).

I don't think this is a good idea - fix the root cause rather than mask the symptom.

ETA: Steam / Overwolf do what ? Add in the ability to socialise (among other things) - that is the root cause of ED .. The isolation of the player being forced to watch a number count down whilst they cruise through space .. There is little to "do" whilst this happens. I agree that better social tools and interraction from the game is the fix, but Steam / Overwolf are side stepping the issue. They provide what FD should have from day 1.

I'd be annoyed if E|D required 100% attention. I'd not have time to type a line or two in my cmdr's log, or to plan things what to do next, or to record my exploration trek, or anything what I find fun *while* playing, and therefore adding to my enjoyment of it all as a whole. Personally, E|D has struck a nice balance between action and nothing-happens.

If you had to manually "keep on course" whilst flying that would indeed get tiresome, however what you are suggesting (as well as the OP) is that there needs to be more in-game activities during these down times. The commander log you alluded to was part of the DDF discussions but has yet to appear, like many other features! I agree in principle with you & OP but slapping an overlay like Steam isn't the answer IMO ... FD needs to start to implement the missing features and engage the player more.

100% agree :)

For me it's realistic that I can write in my log, reach out for a drink - or even wander about the "ship" and go to the galley to make one ;)

I've relished doing these kinds of activities ever since my days with Oolite last year when I was "training up" in anticipation of E: D.

If you can't go and tickle the ship's cat, there's something wrong!

Someone on another thread suggested a space invaders game as part of the wind-shield hud although I say go a step further and add the entire Atari 2600 games catalogue... It can only be a few mb big :)

Next up...."Lost 30mil Type 7 and cargo while browsing"-threads, "Insurance needs to be fixed".

Can't wait for it, bring it on.:D

"Hit the brakes before you hit the wall. Don't browse while driving".

But yea, like said above - you can have an "ingame" browser if you want - doesn't need to be implemented by Fdev as it's possible already.

Adding ed launcher to steam works fine? ads? in steam? where? never seen ads in steam? or maybe I am misunderstanding?

Also steam broadcast works with non steam games :)

i´d prefer ingame content > ingame browser

Quite.

It points to a design problem if players are taking their attention and focus off ED to do something else. There are going to be quiet periods and tools / resources need to be available to keep them in game.

Worst scenario whilst browsing the web during a long SC moment is that you discover a new game to play ;)

Browsing 21st century forums in the 34th century... Does not compute...

Although I must admit to having alt-tabbed on occasion... And planning to set up my netbook on the desk by the keyboard to browse these forums and other places with while I'm playing...
