Newcomer / Intro Gimballed & Fixed Mounts

Hi,I'm trying to develop the optimum mix of weaponry currently all my 4 major weapons are gimballed and my HUD looks like a game of pacman when I'm in combat ie its crap

I'm trying to have a good balance of thermal & kinetic weaponry (flying a cobra)

2 * beam lasers
2* Autocannons

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated

I originally used gimballed multicannons but ended up swapping them out for fixed. I've gotten pretty good at aiming them now and I definitely notice the extra damage they deal out.

While fixed weapons deal more damage, the time that they can do that more damage is actually limited. That should be taken into consideration. A lot of the time in combat, the opponent will not be exactly in the middle of the screen.

I also fly a Cobra and I have outfitted it with 4x gimballed multicannon.

might try fixed a-la 1984.

one thing i don't understand on my Gimballed setup is most of the time when i hit fire on my beams is the beam doesn't fire, it's almost random like the mouse button is knackered. i've check everything, it's not temp or charge. my power gen is B rated and disti is A, i'm always in range before starting a fight.

any ideas?

One thing to keep in mind is not to go for fixed multicannons with fixed beams unless your keeping them on different fire groups because multicannons still need a target lead and beams dont, also if u dont want to have to keep going to a station to reload have all lasers , i prefer pulse as the beams drain the energy too fast and if your targey is out of line of sight on beams your using even more power needlessly

This ^ is very sound advice. I try not to mix fixed weapons due to the lead required. My viper flies with 2 fixed beams and 2 gimballed multi-cannons as does my Cobra and it's pretty useful. I have considered fitting a rack of dumbfires as well but have so far resisted.

And don't forget, the small hardpoints are mounted on the wings of the Cobra, meaning you have to keep your nose slightly above your target for them to be able to hit.

Do you still need to lead target with cannon and Multi-cannon if your have tailing option turned on. Seeing that this option seems to work now in 1.1?

The ship you are flying (Cobra?), does it have it's hard points on top or underneath? The Cobra, for example, has it's small hard points on the underside so you have to make sure that you point your ship up for them to be able to fire, or the gimballed fire-arc cannot aim at your target and thus does not fire (as it would shoot the front of your own craft). In this case, keep your target in the lower third of your screen to hit it, plus you can keep hitting it even when it goes below the cockpit console! :)

thanks Derp that makes perfet sense I'll get myelf 2 hard hitting fixed beam lasers

This post made me laugh - I think it's the only time I've seen "derp" uses in a respectful way!

And what he said is spot on too - the small hardpoints are too widely spaced to be useful with fixed weapons, imo.

Laser beams are useful to take shields down, multicannons are much more efficient against the hull. I'd rather use class 1 beam lasers on the small hardpoints and class 2 MCs on the medium.

I always use fixed weapons for the faster damage (and the challenge). As I fly also since a long time World War 1 flight sims, I'm used to fire at short distance and short bursts only when sure to hit. No need to waste ammo at long distance (over 1 km) except may be when target is flying straight out and about to jump away. It only takes a little patience rather than hosing the sky with costly bullets. :)

I would be a bit cautious about having all my weapons gimballed as if your target uses chaff or counter measures you wont be able to get a lock and ALL you weapons will spin around aimlessly.

In my Viper and now Cobra III I use 2 fixed beam lasers and 2 gimballed multi cannons. I do need to replace the multi cannons on the Cobra though as they are 'G' rated and overheat very, VERY quickly meaning they are next to useless.

Just de-target your target if they use chaffs and aim manually.

Sounds like a power plant issue. MC's are very low heat, and you can run them at 1 pip in weapons.
And there are no other rating to upgrade to. Weapons don't follow the same grade system as other modules.
