Are we ever going to be able to target objects from the system map

So I'm exploring, and I found what looks like a water or earth like world I want to scan.
But there are a lot of other planets in this system.
The only way for me to find it is by trial and error, and this is taking a very long time.
Can we please be able to find objects via targeting them on the map (obviously only if discovery scanned)?

You can do better than trial and error. Fly to the body it orbits, and then go to the nav menu and count the planets out to the one you want. You can also narrow things down based on where it is relative to planets with moons, etc.

If you've got the advanced disco scanner, just ping it, fly above the orbital plane, and count orbit rings if you really want to be that selective. You can also make an educated guess just by the left panel icon when you select them. Water worlds aren't going to be given the Jupiter or cratered moon icons. Exploring is mindlessly simple enough as it is without needing to just ping the scanner and point on the system map. Maybe allow that AFTER a body has been scanned, but not before.

Good tips, thanks.

OP: you don't need that.

Look where you are relative to the sun and planets. Lock few planets, see their distance. Note some easily recognizable combinations, like planet with a moon or two planets orbiting each other (if there are such). Look again at the system map and check planetary orbits (distance to star in AU). Combine all that and in most cases you will pinpont the planet you want to scan in no more than few minutes. Navigation may look daunting at first, but it's not that hard, all you need is little practice really.

edit:
Or, as talshiarr said, fly high above the orbital plane and count circles. It's the last measure, though, because it often takes little bit more time than I usually want to invest.

I was thinking this the other day. It would be a nice feature to be able to select planetary bodies etc from the system map.

A radar-blowup 3d system map with supposed object names would be absolutely awesome.

Same as selecting destinations from the 2d map. Coming in every time and doing donuts around the star while choosing the station you want is not fun.

What would be most wonderful is the orrery view that was left on the cutting room floor, apparently. Who wouldn't prefer this over the static view we have now?

That would be so cool.

When there are planets I want to scan I fly at a 45 degree angle toward the closest one and pick out a path for the rest when the system looks like a dart board.

Definitely. Just press an icon next to the selected system in the galaxy map and it zooms into this kind of thing. That would be great !
