Newcomer / Intro Upgrading a ship with a full cargo hold

Sincerest greets.

I'm currently flying an Adder and ready to upgrade to a Cobra. It is time. Out of curiosity, what will happen if I upgrade while I still have stuff in my cargo hold? I'm planning on selling as much of it as I can, but I have some rare items courtesy of Jaques that I'd like to take a little further afield before I sell it.

Will my stuff move over to the new ship or will it vanish into the port's recycling bin?

Game won't let you change ships until you empty your cargo hold.

So it's a no go until you sell everything.
