To Reroll or Not to Reroll

I have this habit. I don't think it's a good or bad habit, it's just something I tend to do with most new games I play, which is using my first character to test the waters, see what I can do, and then deleting that character to start again. Usually, I try not to get too far ahead, making the decision to reroll less appealing... but considering all I've accomplished in just 3 weeks (fully kitted out Viper, half-decent Asp that can trade, hunt and explore all at once, 10mil in savings, Allied and an Earl in the Empire, Allied with the Federation (by accident)), it probably wouldn't be that hard for me to do it again.

My only question is... is there a way to pick which faction's space you start in or do you always start in Federation space? It was kind of annoying finding my way to Empire space the first time. In an Eagle. With a crappy FSD and no fuel scoop.

I lied. Another question. Should I reroll or just wait to see if FD puts out some character rename feature in the inevitable future?

I do the same thing in some games; make a first character to learn the ins and outs of the game. I really don't see the point in this game unless you really want to change your name or you screwed up your faction reputation like I did with the last faction I was in lol. Thankfully it was a small independent faction. I guess smuggling and killing civilians is frowned upon... pff

I reroll often, you will always start in the same place, It kinda sucks. I say reroll, the most exciting part of this game for me is the early stages when your vulnerable. After that every death is because of inattention or pushing my limits, in the beginning though it's more tense.

The game is honestly not very fleshed out so I don't want to be doing my thing, making my way, when a mechanic drops that would have effected how I got there in the first place. The lack of things to do once you are established means playing ironman makes a lot of sense, the lack of content isn't as big of an issue when staying alive is the focus.

Yeah, that's kinda how I feel too, especially now that Elite Anacondas are actually... ELITE. I killed a ton of them effortlessly before 1.1 and it kinda helped me climb through the ranks really fast.

Dude you can pick a 1000 light year trip now with one click. It's pretty easy to get to...anywhere.
And for that, I thank the devs. At least I have a target system to reach now as well, rather than just finding the closest red dot to Fed space. Only a hundred-something ly, I think, which maps out instantly now.

Give ironman a couple shots. After awhile making that first chunk of money is easy and your changes to the background persist so it's actually not a huge setback if your tooling around in a viper or cobra. Working at the upgrades gives you a constant payoff and you feel like your getting somewhere. It's a good way to learn the game and figure out what you want to do and while your at it you get pretty good at not dying. I know its not for everybody and it isn't about hardcore or anything but in my opinion makes it a much richer game.

Plus I'm going down with the ship, those insurance yahoos can shove it.

Why would anyone reroll in this game? It's not WoW or an RPG where you have stats and such that you could have screwed up.

If you don't like your location just fly somewhere else.

It's not about stats. I like immersion and character is the most important aspect of it. I can enjoy wasting my time more if I have an inner monologue going on in my head regarding the character. As such... *points to signature*

Starting and staying in Open this time. Maker's breath, there's a lot of people around LHS 3447 and immediate surrounding systems...

Stop stealing my kills.

When people steal you kills you go right ahead and still their ship :D
Easiest way of going at it is by flying real close to the guy he is shooting at so he has a chance to accidentally shoot you although I dont know how effective that is in 1.1

Alternatively go for something like cannons instead of MCs and kill steal his targets when they get below 5% just pop 2 of those cannons and voilà, bounty voucher plus a chance at an epic battle with a Cmdr if he gets mad enough hehe

Nothing wrong with re-rolling or playing Self imposed Ironman rules. I have done it a few times now and currently sitting with more credits than I care for and a few nicely kitted out ships. I am considering myself of clearing the save and actually doing some Ironman (Open play only) for a bit more of a challenge.

Do what you feel is right mate, its your game and your life in the Elite world. As long as your having fun that's all the matters :)

Rerolling is different in this game from other games where you reroll; In other games you have "stats" and "levels" to climb, in here the "levels" of piloting and gunnery skills, as well as trade and regional knowledge, carries over to the "new character". In the end, all that is really reset is your bank balance and your collection of toys.

Thus a rerolled sidewinder pilot with 1000cr to his name is far more deadly than a new player just starting out. And the money and achievements just roll in much faster- making for a fresh and more enjoyable redo experience.

I've "rerolled" twice now, and like the freshness of a restart. My "status" as an in game gazillionaire with the most 1337 ship possible really doesnt appeal to me. (I'm not trying to measure my self worth in-game)

What we really need is additional characters on our current log in i.e. multiple characters but only one can be in use at a time, Freelancer had five per account and it meant you could have a variety of careers and ships located around the game systems. The only way to achieve this currently AFAIK is to buy another game (pricey!), so perhaps FD could sell another character slot locked to our existing account for a small nominal fee or possibly a huge wad of in game cash!

I have rerolled a decent number of times so far, every time I tell myself "this is my last run, I won't clear this save". But once you do it, it's actually pretty fun to start from scratch. The furthest I got on a save that I ended up wiping, was a T6 and 16mil in the bank.

Yeah I have re-rolled a few times, currently sitting with 200 mill and a few nice ships and have some friends who just bought the game challenging me to re-roll and have a few friendly bets on who can get to this and that whilst playing in "Open only" and with our Ironman rules. Sounding fun and will most likely clear save and get into it. I enjoy challenges and currently unless you make your own challenges in Elite: Dangerous it isn't that Dangerous!!

In the end, it's just a game and how ever you enjoy playing is the right approach for you. I enjoy having that fear of dying and having to work at it again, where others love there big top tier ships and using rolls of credits are fire starters.

It's definitely more fun this time around. Already in a half-kitted out Eagle (been getting really lucky on those Anaconda spawns), which I'll probably stick with even though I could technically afford a Viper now. ... wait... *looks at his previous post* Oh wow. Definitely making faster progress too.
