Local "chatrooms" at large stations to increase player-to-player social interactions

I personally believe adding a local chatroom to large stations such as those found in popular bounty hunting, and rare/common trading systems would do wonders for adding to this game's (lack of) social environment.

In my opinion, without in-game chat functionality for multiple users at once, there is a lack of meaningful social experiences for players not using out-of-game methods of communication. (i.e. - your buddy's mumble or teamspeak server)

To add to that, I also believe that having an in-game chatroom option will allow players to better communicate to each other within the context of the game, without breaking immersion by being knowingly connected to an external VOIP.

I don't think that would help much in stations: the odds that you're docked there at the same time as another player, who happens to be in the mood of just sitting there and chat instead of doing whatever he came here to do, seem quite small to me. They could at help on an instance or system level, albeit they would be limited to people having actual activities in that system, not those that travel around.

And while a global chat would obviously be a mess, I think there should at least be a regional chat so that enough people can discuss together long enough to make it interesting.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong, regardless a station chat would be a good start.

i would actually prefer a vicinity chat. like, a 100ly radius. stations can be empty. i don't think having a station chat helps the player communication that much.

are space stations instanced or are they a part of the system?
are systems instanced?

im just now realizing i dont know.

but i agree whenever i play on open mode i find it way to quiet for all the stuff happening in the station.

Based on my understanding, everything is instanced separately. There isn't a system-wide instance, but an instance for each bubble of space: stations, outposts, nav points, extraction points, USSes, combat zones and supercruise.

Everytime you use your frameshift drive, you're switching to another instance.

I was thinking exactly this same thing, it can be lonely out there sometimes and it would be good to chat for a couple of mins while docked after spending all night out there exploring or mining.
In fact I think this should be implemented even more so than local area comms, or maybe the local area comms thing could be an upgrade with a higher class of upgrade meaning you can reach pilots further away.

For me, the lack of local open chat is the main reason I'm not playing this game. I feel far too alone. They don't have to break realism to just have different radio bands that have a certain radius from the ship. You know, have specific hailing frequencies for specific types of chat, make it so you can only have one on at a time, and put an indicator light on the UI for your personal frequency when you are in local chat.

On space stations allow access to long distance coms that create chat rooms, as well as the ability to broadcast to and receive a message from any ship in the system while in a docking bay connected to the stations com system.

This seems to make sens, and double it with text. Most people would sit on private chat, but when just sitting around in a social area, like mining, maybe tune to an open frequency.

Another need thing we could do is broadcast some radio stations through some sort of galactic subspace array (news has to travel somehow). We could have music with news breaks, talk radio about current in game events. I know this would take a lot of producing, but damn that would be cool.

I agree.
This should have been in the game at day 1.

Yes it should. Every time I log in now, I feel completely alone while surrounded by people. I very quickly get lonely and log right back off. This game, though beautiful and awesome in its immersion and action, just drops the ball here. The game just feels unfinished without the ability to engage in a live community. There is no reason they could not offer this basic feature of any massive multiplayer game while addressing their concerns on immersion in a smart way.

We need a space cantina!

You could have like a "message wall" that gets deleted every hour or two, so you can make some networking even if other players are not docked at the same time with you.

I like the idea of open chat to within a short range of your ship, maybe have a few different frequencies to listen in on..

The instances don't really matter for chat in text as it can be on a separate server which everyone joins with whatever rules the devs want to impose inn respect to the game.. only in instance or within certain distance unless you are in local space then another set distance and so on..

Absolutely. A nice bar would be good, and there would be pilots fully suited in the barfor a quick drink, and sitting at tables. Nothing to much, and maybe only one viewpoint, and a chat window :p
