Newcomer / Intro got over 100k tonight

i started the night at 39k and now have 170k. someone posted how bounties are better at resource extraction sites. they were not lying. i came across one near an astroid belt and after about 3 hours i had over 170k in total credits. it was pretty easy too. never was i in a spot to be blown up. there were so many fed ships that made it super easy to get coin.

now what ship to buy? i went to a terminal that only offered 5 ships. only 2 were in my price range. i have no clue what i am looking to buy

I second the Adder. It gives you the opportunity to try out every playstyle instead of committing to one and is fun to fly And while it kind of lacks the Millennium Falcon vibe I get from a Cobra, you can always pretend it's Lone Starr's Winnebago. (Sadly sans jam launcher.)

i loved the Adder while i had it - a very capable ship for its size. just don't look upwards, all you'll see is roof.

upgrades? my first choices would be shields - gimballed beam - gimballed multi cannon.

there's many different opinions on weapon setups, it depends on how you fly and fight as to what suits you best. some prefer pulse lasers because they fire longer before draining the capacitor. others swear by fixed lasers because they hit harder, but require precise aiming and your target can slip out of view easily in a fight. gimbals give you limited auto-aiming with a slight reduction in damage. multi cannons are good for when the lasers have lowered the enemy's shield. cannons are devastating but fire slowly and miss easily - better for large targets and brave pilots who get in real close

for the adder, what would be the best things to upgrade on it first?

Depends on what you want to do, but the power distributor is always a good bet so long as you've enough left to equip it to do the thing you primarily want to do (which in your case sounds like weaponry)

Love my Adder, it's been a good ship.

+1 for the Power Distributor. You can fit some Shield Banks to one of the utility mounts (don't yell, they got me out of a bind a few times).

My weapon load-out is:
1 Gimbaled E1 Beam laser in my medium slot
2 Fixed F1 Pulse lasers in the small slots
1 K-warrant scanner
1 Shield Bank

Also, upgrade your cargo holds, frame-shift drive, thrusters, power-plant... I pretty much upgraded the whole thing and now has a 500k replacement value. Worth it? I dunno. I've traveled close to 1000 LY in it and it's served me well.

Good flying!

(edit) also, check this thread if you haven't already. Lots of love for the Adder.

battling is probably least desirable...i only did those bounties cause it was there and quick and easy

im more interested in exploring and trading...moving cargo or mining interests me.

In that case then the power distributor is still an invaluable upgrade. Allowing you to run the mining laser for longer, and escape faster should you be attacked.

I must insist that the first thing to upgrade is always the power distributor, next the FSD then power distributor some more.
if you still need more jump range, upgrade other modules to D (lightest for all modules)
only upgrade power when you need it as extra power capacity does not give you anyting.

It's all about MASS. Less mass will help increase your jump range- so balance things like life support (get by on lowest mass) with things like FSD and Power Plant/Thrusters, which will give you better performance with the added draw of more mass. And Laden is simply carrying full cargo.

i got the adder and upgraded a few things as suggested.

any tips on using the fuel scoop? i bought the cheapest one to try it out and it appears you try and stay close enough until you are about to fry your ship. i kept overheating really fast

is it safe to move over to open mode? im around a system called brani

The fuel scoop should run optimally when heat is around 100%. Don't worry, you don't take damage until 150%. The speed you're moving doesn't make any difference to scooping rate, so a common method is to just sit at a "good distance" (ie. Heat isn't climbing quickly and you are scooping near max rate) from a star with the throttle at zero (so 30m/s).
The smaller scoops work slower than bigger and higher grade scoops. But in an Adder you only have an 8T tank to fill.

As for "safe to play open". I've only ever played open (other than the tutorials). I decided that having other players in my game was more interesting than not having them there. At the end of the day you can be interdicted and attacked by an NPC, a player doing it is likely to be more skilled but if you're pirated you can't negotiate with an NPC. Plus, it's Dangerous - live the danger! :)

Adder FTW, I spent around 3 to 4 million fitting it out though, top of the range everything, it's a great ship, I sold my Cobra and just use this instead, it's unbreakable, highly manoeuvrable and an excellent smuggling ship, with the right upgrades, for me it's the dirty little secret of ED :)
