Friendly with the Alliance but don't know how....

I've just noticed that I am now friendly with the alliance. I only noticed this because alliance stations and police ships are now green for me, so I checked my stats and sure enough I show friendly with the alliance.

I'm not quite clear how that happened because I thought you had to do missions to get your reputation up before you became friendly with any of the factions. I have been doing mainly trading up to now. I might have done a little bit of random bounty hunting here and there but not much.

I certainly wasn't trying to become friendly with the Alliance. In fact, I seem to remember I heard someone say on Lave Radio the other day that they had been desperately trying to become alliance friendly for weeks and couldn't do it, but I may have misheard that.

Can you become friendly just by trading or is there some bug at work here?

Also does this mean I can't become friendly with Empire or Federation, or can you independently be friendly with all of them?

Yep, lots of successful trading will slowly raise you as well. A lot slower than philanthropic missions, but it does happen.

I've been working my behind off for Alliance affiliated factions, I'm 'ALLIED' with at least two and friendly with others and I have an Alioth permit but I am still only neutral with the faction as a whole. What else do I need to do?
