Whats the point of 'Discoveing' Asteroid Belts etc?

As far as I can tell, these do not Appear to offer any sort of monetary reward to discover or scan them, so why do they need to be discovered? Whats their point other than for "filler"?

Same for planetary rings and other general bits and pieces that arent stars or planets or stellar phenomenon etc.

I'd like to know this too.
.
FWIW. I've given up scanning asteroid belts - just cycle through then till the next planet comes up on the Nav comp. Being able to click on the system map to set destinations will be a godsend. :)

I'm hoping it's placeholder tied to an overhaul of mining.

What I'd like to see is a more detailed minerals report appear on the map screen after a scan, so you'd know whether to come back later with a mining ship or maybe sell the data to miners.

I've given up on mining for now. Too often I've come to a belt to find it full of bauxite or some other worthless rocks that barely pay your slaves food bills :(

One word: Mining. Discovering a resource-rich asteroid belt should increase the value of the system data.

I scan 'em if I'm near them. Why not?

WRT finding worthless rocks - you're just looking in the wrong place. My favorite mining spot I pull down mostly all precious metals, chunks in the 15% - 40% range. Just don't pick a spot - you gotta look around and when you find precious metal heaven, note the location and don't broadcast it.

To annoy those of us with OCD.

I think it's placeholder myself and in future scanning these down might be much more lucrative and even necessary to take advantage of whatever buffs mining may get in some future.
