Newcomer / Intro Heat up to 365%!!!!! What the heck just happened?

Traveled to Banki, as Galnet said a little rebel fight was brewing up. I pop into the low intensity conflict zone, and there's quite a few CMDRs in there. Nearly all have picked the same faction, so we're all in green.

I get into a fight with an NPC, and notice I'm under fire and the shields are taking a pounding. I see a little red hollow triangle behind me - a Pylon loaded for bear. My Cobra isn't going to be much good with him on my six. I start evasive, and ran into a bit of a comedy of errors.

Voice Attack is on, but I've switched over to manual keying, since the wife is watching TV, and doesn't want to hear me barking out commands. NOTE TO SELF: Turn off Voice Attack when not using Voice Attack! As I'm going evasive, I see "SILENT RUNNING" light come on. Apparently, the show on TV said something close to my Silent Running command. I turn it off, while the shields are now gone, and I'm taking damage.

A few more seconds of evasive, and I get the FSD spooled up. Hull at 65% when the jump initiates.

Entering SC, I look down, and the heat is up to 365% WHAT??? I panic, slow down to regular space, and frantically start turning components off. 360%..... 340%.... 320% Hurry and COOL OFF!!!!

By the time it dipped under 100%, I went from 65% hull to 29%. Definitely was great from a sheer panic perspective, but I've never seen heat generated that high, or even though it could get that high without instantly exploding the ship.

Was that a bug, or somehow FSD'd while Silent Running was shutting down?

I have never understood how Silent Running works, the one time I hit it by mistake I was up to 200% heat very quickly..so I guess it is just related to that. I guess turning off all systems includes the cooling systems so I suppose that's related to what happened to you..

Yes it was the silent running, definitely.

What that does is close your heat vents on your ship which masks your heat signature so you don't show up on enemy scanners (hence the 'silent' part).

The downside with shutting your heat vents is that no heat is vented from the ship so heat builds up, and it builds up very quickly.

I think it's designed for short term use, like sneaking into stations quickly.

FSD generates a lot of heat when charging. I'd think you'd die from the heat alone.

Cooling system is part of the Power Plant. It's impossible to turn off except for shutting down the heat vents with Silent Running.

Good point.

Your ship also heats up significantly when charging the FSD. If you haven't invested in a class A FSD yet then it can sometimes take you over 100% heat by itself (the more expensive FSDs generate a lot less heat).

So it was probably a combination of being in silent running and charging your FSD at the same time. If you had also been close to a star you would have probably blown up.

Doing a micro-analysis on the scenario, based on your responses, I think that was probably the case.

At noticing the Silent Running I turned it off prior to jump and was around 130%, if I recall. I boosted once, bumping the heat up more. I then kicked off FSD and due to the slight mass lock, I boosted again while it was spooling up.

All of these cause heat rise by themselves. I'm thinking it was a combination of the Silent Running, Boost, FSD spool-up, and boost while in spool-up that shot that heat up.

But man, talk about panic mode when it's that high!

after all the other must do's..........

........ re-assign the silent running key to some far distant corner of the keyboard .... probably in the same area that you should have moved the jettison key to..... :)
