Newcomer / Intro My story so far ...

Being a newcomer (bought the game on 10th Jan), I thought I'd share my experience of the game so far.

After a couple of disastrous starts (thank you "Clear Save"), I'd started to get the hang of things.

I've found using a joystick the best approach, and it took a while to find out the most common controls I'd need for my style of play, and I still occasionally hit the wrong button. :)

I decided to start off just exploring, perhaps following in the footsteps of r4nger0 and try just using a Sidewinder.

As I went along, always going left on the Galaxy map, to get away from the more crowded areas, I started to earn credits with some regularity. I imagined my character as an intrepid pilot, gathering data of undiscovered systems, and finding various settled systems that seem to have slipped through the cracks, always turning in the data at the earliest opportunity.

I got interdicted a few times, but always managed to get away. I slowly improved my docking skills, but still overshoot here and there. :)

When I started this particular incantation, I'd stripped the Sidewinder of weapons, shields, and cargo space, and installed a fuel scoop. At various points, I beefed up various components, which improved range and durability, but what I really wanted was a Detailed Surface Scanner. At quarter of a million, that seemed to be forever out of reach.

So I decided to supplement my income with some trading.

A couple of nights ago, I found myself at a shipyard, and was able to trade the beefed out Sidewinder for a Hauler, and upgrade a few components.

I read up about trading and trade routes, but found it difficult to map supply systems and demand systems, and get a regular route going.

Today I found a cluster of systems, in an area about 60 light years across, that encompasses some Agricultural, Industrial, and Corporate systems, and found a lucrative business doing Bulletin Board delivery missions.

For example, the food supply company on one outpost was causing issues, so I was tasked with getting six tons of Algae. Bought this at a total cost of 300 credits, and the payment on delivery was just over 4000 credits - they must have been desperate!

There are various political intrigues going on as well, with various messages and data needing to be taking here, there, and wherever, which at around 1000 credits a pop, is nothing to be sneezed at.

Of course, with cargo, comes pirates. The interdiction rate has gone up, sometimes two or three times in one system. I can still evade most of them, but some I need to drop out of SuperCruise, and then try to avoid getting hit, while the FSD cooldown completes, and I can fire up the FTL again. However, in one case, a missile up my exhaust port caused me to test the quality of my insurance (phew, had the rebuy covered).

And, of course, inattention can get you. Coming out of HyperSpace, I'd forgotten the mantra of throttling down when entering HyperSpace, and in my eagerness to bring up the system list, so I could lock in my destination, managed to fly right into the sun. Again, thanks to the insurance, I was covered, but I decided to park in the hanger overnight, and make my way down to the mess deck for a hasty meal, while I wrote this up.

All in all, I'm having a blast, thoroughly pleased to have bought the game, and now I just need to ration my playing time, as it's getting in the way of regular life :) .

Sounds like you're finding a good groove for yourself. I bought the game around the first of the year and I've been having a blast ever since...Elite really has become quite the obsession for me. I keep to trading and a small bit of exploring. My current ship is an Asp that I've just recently managed to upgrade pretty much completely and I've got a Type 6 parked in storage as a back-up ship. See you out in the black and good journeys to you Commander

Welcome Commander!

Rep added for sticking with it past that initial bump where lack of funds makes mistakes expensive ;) Now you have your hauler you will find the cash goes up much quicker.

When in Supercruise you can avoid overshooting by putting your throttle in the blue zone and throttling back to the very last spot in that zone the throttle indicator line stays blue. This is your slowest auto-speed but you will never overshoot. With a little practice you will learn how to go faster at the beginning of the route and then throttle back.

Look on the top right of the commodities panel for the "galactic average" column title. Click this to see data from other systems you have including ones where you bought data from the galaxy map.

Finding trade routes is a bit of an art form but there are tools to help. You could use EliteOCR to capture commodity prices including the supply/demand and save them as csv or Excel files without "cheating" and using other people's price data. I use TCE which incorporates EliteOCR to help find routes (again without using anybody else's data).

If you want to get slightly more cheaty you can use tools like Slopey's which is essentially a database where Commanders share their notes so you can find trade routes that you don't have data form. CMDR Thrudd's website is another good resource that does the same and both optionally let you use EliteOCR to save writing everything down. Thrudd's site is good for fetch-and-carry missions too as you can find where the nearest place to find whatever you need is.

It's certainly been a lot of fun so far, enjoying the simulation level. I'm sure as more features are added along the way, it will get better and better.

I've been wondering how to use the bought trade data! I never thought to click in the column titles, to expand things out.

I'm still fine tuning my muscle memory for the joystick, particularly the throttle. It's Logitech Extreme 3D pro, and I've set it to forward only, and assigned a reverse button - makes going from 0% to 100% a lot more controllable :) .

Probably the only thing I really have a problem with, is not having a feel for how big my ship is, so when I'm aiming for the slot in a station, I don't know how much leeway I have, if there is other traffic entering or exiting. But practice makes perfect :) .

You can probably fit about 100 sidewinders in that slot all at once, I wouldn't worry about it too much until you get a T9 or something large.

Good read and I am glad you are enjoying the game.

Fly safe commander.

It sounds like you're really enjoying the game and taking the right approach of balancing fun with making money to progress. Nice work on finding a good trade route. As for balancing with real life...this game can easily become a second job. I've had to force myself to take a day off now and again.

I certainly don't feel the need to have the biggest ship/bank balance/bounty on my head/whatever :).

To me, this game is all about simulation - your character needs to work to get ahead, and to stay within their skills and competence, which only improve as you, the player, learns more about handling the ship, the politics of the three factions, the lawlessness of Anarchy space, etc.

I'm sure that as more development and features get added down the track, there will be more stuff to do - I don't think it needs the developers to add a story, as you make your own. My opinion, and I'm sure many other players have their own opinions on what makes this a great (or not) game to play.

I'm in it for the long haul. I've played Neverwinter Nights with varying intensity since it's initial release in 2002 until now, and will continue to play as long as the play style keeps my interest (this would probably explain my role playing approach to Elite: Dangerous :)).

I'm lucky enough to be able to play for an hour or so most days, but I try not to play every chance I get.

Thanks for all the positive reinforcement.

Fly safe.

If an Anaconda can get through the slot then an ickle Sidewinder won't have any problem at all :)

Though I agree it's quite difficult to get a sense of scale approaching the slot as it seems the same size/clearance through the cockpit window wether you're approaching in a sidewinder, viper, cobra, whatever.

If you are having problem with your speed coming out of FTL I set numpad 0 to 4 from 0 to 100% thrust 0 = 0% 1 = 25% you get the idea. when in super cruise nad homing in on the target when the counter gets down to 10 I hit 75% button watch the counter drop to 6 and just cruise on in until you are clear to come out of jump. Shpild be about 8km out :).
Also useful in the staion as 25% is a good landing speed, just stop over the centre and drop her in. One bit of advice I did find useful about landing was " land like an F18 not a JumpJet". Seems to speed it up no end.

Have fun
Loon ;)

Your story is my polar opposite, I started out made one delivery of 2 scrap for a little money. tried commodities and the amount gained was not even worth the time, then i got killed (interdicted) by NPC and he was so fast and turn so sharp I could not out run him or even keep up with his turn rate. Well i got the same ship again afterward and I had 9k credits. Well since it is impossible to fight with this ship I took off the blaster and put a mining laser on it. Went and found an asteroid, started the laser, a chunk of(**) came off the asteroid, I opened my scoop (cause I have no clue how to get the mineral in the cargo hold) I see on the screen I need a refinery? I go to Preuss Station and there is no refinery to buy to put on my ship. When i leave the statiion I will have a tank of gas and no clue what to do next. It is a pretty game and I enjoy the sight seeing but soon i will have no money and probably be floating in space like the original Lost in Space only instead of Don as the pilot my ship has Gilligan Lol

Opposite of mine too. Until I have my joystick (tomorrow) I'm just pottering around going from system to system, and refining my travelling and docking techniques as I go. However, on my first flight out, An NPC in a Sidewinder attacked me, and thanks to me bothering with a little training beforehand, plus my old experience at combat in old Elite, I blew him to bits in about 10 mins, while only suffering 2% of damage myself. I got 1250Cr for that, but I know my little Sidewinder won't get me too far in sustained combat, so I think I will choose a more peaceful career for the time being.

Keep your throttle in the blue zone for the tightest turning circle. Most don't realise this and stick to full burn which is pretty horrible for turning. When I tried mining I couldn't find a refinery or mining laser anywhere close to the extraction system. I wouldn't start a new character with mining though as pirates like to hand out at mining spots and as soon as that first ton appears in your hold they will open fire on you after scanning.

To get over that initial bump where you don't have enough money to absorb small mistakes I always suggest 2 ways of making money.

The safest is to look for courier missions on the bulletin board that don't require cargo.

The first is to jump to a system and after turning away from the star look in your left UI for the nav beacon. Supercruise over and drop out as normal. Target ships and look to the left of your radar untilt he scan completes and see if they are wanted. If so (and they aren't too big then blast 'em! The stock Sidewinder is free if you die and Sideys/Eagles are generally easy meat and before long the cops will show up to help you. Last hit gets the kill so if you see cops taking on something big then hand around until the wanted ship is down to 1% and then swoop in to see if yo9u can snatch the kill. This will get you bounty vouchers which you can turn in under Contacts in the station menu for money. You lose the vouchers if you die though so turn in often.

Exploration is also good for beginner money but you can find yourself in systems without stations so you can't refuel unless you have a fuel scoop.

Once you get to around 8k spend 4,500cr on a fuel scoop so you never have to pay for fuel again. After jumping into a new system aim to skim over the top of the star and throttle to zero until the fuel scoop activates and then use pitch up/down to manage your heat and keep it as close to 98% as you can without hitting 99%. If you want to play ultra safe keep the throttle at zero but scooping will take longer. Once you get the hang of it you can speed up a bit to scoop faster.

If interdicted don't try fighting it until you learn how to escape as if you fail to escape you will take a small amount of damage and your FSD takes longer to cool down so running isn't an option right away. Throttle down to zero as soon as the interdiction happens to submit and as soon as you drop out of Supercruise put 4 pips to engines and keep boosting until you can jump out.

You would be surprised how far you can get in combat with the stock sidewinder with no upgrades and remember that dying it it is free so any bounty vouchers you cash in are pure profit. I'm not the best combat pilot in the world but as above Sidey's and Eagles are pretty easy meat and I could take on most Cobras unless they were very well equipped (though it takes a while to take them down).

Tiamat,
Thanks for the advice! especially about the fuel scooping. I found a Thread (there are many) with www.elitetradingtool.co.uk and it saved the game for me. I have found a couple of places 2 jumps apart and have been going round trip making a little money each time and enjoying the graphic,s and all the npc activity, just having fun watching all that is going on and a lot is all the time. Thanks again for being helpful, it's great fun when the niche is found but a little difficult to find it without help.
The Dev's really need to authorize Prima Games to do a Paper Strategy Guide on this game, that would seal up a bunch of the gaps between knowledge and ignorance concerning this program.

Update: here is an example of why this game is so frustrating to me. I went and bought the fuel scoop, then I watched a youtube on how to use it on a star. I headed on my trip dropped out of Frame Travel came to a stop like always so I do not hit the star and die. I looked through ALL the key bindings and keys trying to figure out how to OPEN the fuel scoop like we have to OPEN the mining scoop. I looked closely at all available screens and nowhere is there a way to open the fuel scoop! I get so mad I aimed my ship at the star gave it max power to go ahead and die and remove this game from my hard drive permanently...Well the fuel scoop opened AUTOMATICALLY.
Good grief, why didn't they just label it "Auto Fuel Scoop" and then I would have had a clue that it is automatic. These are the type of things that are frustrating.
Just wanted you to know, cause I know you guys definitely support the game and the players on these forums.

An update:

After a fairly solid week* of trading around the Auradjan system, picking up some amazing payments for various missions, I refitted the SS Baldurdash as an explorer (with a DSS, yay!), and have started out from my adopted home of Malzburg Station, off to see the unexplored sights.

After a while, I'll no doubt return home, and do a bit more trading, just to keep my trading licence current (there are some good deals to be had around Auradjan/Atins/Housets/Ezerishapa, if you know where to look, and always travel with a full cargo hold, on every trip).

* real life notwithstanding :)

As a player, I'm always finding little things that improve my skill, be it in trading or exploring, and even in combat (decided to fit a burst laser to the Hauler, and fight back at the occasional interdiction). Just like real life, there is no structure but what you make of it, and the rewards are not just the biggest bank balance, or the biggest collection of A-class outfitted ships. The fact that I've played around 25 hours in total, and every journey has been different, shows that, for me at least, this will only get better as Frontier continue to evolve the environment.

The only complaint I have is those NPC's that insist on running me down as I try to enter/exit a station, and they just don't care :) - we really need rear vision mirrors, or something that shows us what's happening beyond just the view out of the front window. Either that, or a queuing system that even NPC's respect. (eg, "Docking request granted, you are number five in the queue")

For those that may be interested . . .

After doing some fun exploration, I've settled into full time trading. Having upgraded to a T6, I've got around a dozen systems within a 50ly radius that seem to cover most goodies, and most of my cargo is mission related. The only straight trading I do is to keep the holds full, and a couple of times, I've been able to deliver mission cargo without having to go anywhere :) keeping stuff in the holds can be useful.

Working on beefing up the T6 to improve shield and engine performance, to deal with them pesky pirates.

Still having a blast.
