Any reason to Join Alliance?

What's up!

Looking at all 3 major factions I see that Federation and Empire you can gain rank and the ability to use special ships. What's with the Alliance? Do they have a ranking or special ships? If not, why join them?

Right now, nope. Go for empire if you get a choice (cooler special ship). Sucks too, Alliance is the only faction I feel has a moral highground. between oppressive bureaucrats in the federation, and literal slave drivers in the empire, the optional union of free states that is the Alliance seems wonderful. I'm looking forward to when the alliance is fully implemented, but I think its going to be awhile!

To my knowledge, there are no advantages, but 1 extra average ship for each of the other two factions is barely an enticement either, so there isn't much difference at present.

The only 'special' thing about it so far is the permits for some systems. Though I've noticed numerous Alliance worlds sell the Fed Dropship, which is sort of odd. Not sure if that's a bug or if I missed something in the lore that explains it. None of the Alliance worlds I've been to have the Clipper, however.

Do you roleplay? If so, then yes.

Are you asking for a built-in gameplay reason to do so (besides maknig zones safer to fly in, as you do with every other faction)? Then, no.

Anyone else looking forward to trying Mcdonald's new "Elite Burger"? For $9.99 you get a bun and some sauce, and have to guess when the rest of it will arrive.

Dude! Your signature is the funniest thing I've read in months! LMAO. I am still laughing several minutes after I read it. I was reading these forums on my phone while playing and it made me ALT-TAB out of the game to post this. It's absolutely perfect... the sauce is REAL good though!

+rep!

Haha, cheers :) You're right, the sauce is very tasty :)

As others have pointed out the Alliance is the "good guy" of the Elite world. (whatever that means because let's face it: politics are politics)

As of today there WERE excellent reasons to be an Alliance supporter but those are found in Frontier First Encounters and given Elite Dangerous quasi-reboot nature it is uncertain whether or not the will run with it and tie in FFE's story/lore to this game. I won't bore with the details but the Alliance had the most advanced shipyards in the galaxy (New Rossyth Shipyards) meaning their ships were essentially a study in what works between different groups. Perhaps their shining moment in history (other then the uprising of Alioth that kicked both the Feds and Imperial forces out of the system) was the successful negotiations with the Thargoids.... that's when FFE (or the story) effectively ended and who knows where it goes from here.

In ED you're dealing with a faction that has less that a century of existence as compared to say the Federation that has been in business for about a thousand years... that alone makes me want to play the Alliance side to see how things develop.

Because the chicks love us.

But there really isn't anything to stop even a max repped Fed or Empire player from doing that when things have actually developed for the Alliance, is there? If we had to choose one faction, and forgo the rest, I could kind of see the appeal in going Alliance on the hope that they'll eventually be really cool (you'd also be royally screwed if that didn't happen), but right now you're just limiting your ship choices aren't you? I was gaining rank with Alliance till I asked myself why I'd do that when I could get a Clipper and come back later, instead.

Nothing wrong with doing it for RP or because you like their beliefs (even if all 3 factions act and behave the same in game) or back story, but from a gameplay perspective it's a tough sell imo.

Well as far as incentives go re 'Ships only available' lets look a little closer...

Federation Dropship... Not as many believe a military frontline offensive vehicle, but a heavily armoured auxillary fleet supply ship!

Imperial Clipper...Nothing ambiguous about this, It's a Clipper. Think the 'CuttySark' a Tea Clipper I.e. a fast trader between distant ports.

So do the Alliance need a better/unique trading ship?

'I thank you!' :D

Their philosophy on life is much closer to mine. Feds are rules by corporations, Empire is basically a slave state with fancy clothes. The Alliance is multicultural and respectful of individual choices.

sounds like an ideal way to introduce one of the as yet unreleased ships, and draw more pilots into the Alliance fold at the same time. i've been focusing on Fed and Empire, but if Alliance gets fleshed out a bit more, i'll do some work for them too

Thanks for all the replies. It took me a little over 3 hours (I did some system exploring on the way) and finally made it to Alliance space. I don't really care about the ships, but I do wish they would fix Alliance ranking.

Thought of this when I saw Allied Police Forces:

Gotta love the 80's!

That's what I like about ED, you can fight/align to a major/minor faction and head out in the galaxy and align to others whatever you want to do.

I've personally picked a faction that I'm sticking with.
