Newcomer / Intro Exploration of the COL sectors - almost lost in space with no fuel left

That misses the point - the comparison to combat was about using the appropriate tools to get the job done. In that regard, it is a pertinent comparison.

People have different reasons for doing it in the first place. Yours is to spot something without computational aids. That's your prerogative. However, with a great many secondary and tertiary stars so far out from the primary that you jump into, the chances of finding planets is actually relatively small. The game helps a great deal already with supercruise and the parallax effects that induces, and one could then argue that you're using a crutch and should stop SCing, hang out in normal space with the engines off and used your eye and thumb (an astrolabe would be another artificial aid). The desire to say "I found it myself unaided" itself introduces an artificial constraint that others might not see the point of. I certainly don't.

I bought an ADS and went off on a trip to LBN 623 for my first foray - a 1300LY round trip. I enjoyed it immensely and intend to do another one to the Scutum-Crux arm via the Eta-Carina nebula once I've saved enough for an Asp. I'm not going to do it in that ship, however. Repair bills can be quite high with it, I'm given to understand. I'll probably refit my Cobra for >23LY jumps. As for why I did it in the first place, well, I wanted to see what it was like. I also wanted the trip to pay for itself.

I still don't see the comparison as there's a massive difference between using the "wrong" tools and getting blown up in 2 seconds and having to put some work in to find a star ;) The comparison might be going exploring without a fuel scoop... I also never mentioned unaided.

I think we shall have to agree to disagree on this one :)

Any explorer who traveled far beyond the colonized 1,000 LY radius have discovered any stations ?

This is the kinds of special/rare things we need. ie: A very small splattering of platforms etc. ANYTHING to break of the mould that is exploration. ie: You can travel from one side of the galaxy to the other, and you know exactly what you'll find in every system - Different coloured ball - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=95448

Wow great post ! It sounded exactly like what would be the perfect game ! I really hope FD will implement some of your ideas, it will give ED a bigger and more immersive dimension !

Pretty sure it's quite a bit less than 1000LY radius. IIRC Sol is only a couple of hundred LY from the core ward edge of human expansion.

Have any of you guys seen a decent tutorial on Fuel Scooping? like a best practice or how-to guide?

I've been using one for many weeks now and over time developed a technique where I can orbit a sun and scoop indefinitely until the tank is full (albeit at a slower rate). I used to just dive on in, max. the scoop out and dive out before hitting 140 degrees.

It just occurred to me that I've never seen anything on the proper use of the scoop so far. How do you guys handle it?

I don't think I've ever seen a definitive "how to" for fuel scooping either.

I've found the best is to head straight for the center of the star. I do, however, have an A3 rated fuel scoop which fills up the tank way before the hull starts overheating.

I wouldn't recommend that with the basic 386CR jobbie though. with that it would be best to lightly skim across at slow speed and pull out at about 120% overheat.

With fuel scooping I judge it by heat. I come out of hyper space and aim straight for the sun, when my heat gets to about 98% I stop dead and just sit there and soak it up. With a good fuel scoop I fill up fast and don't overheat.

I've been 3000ly out from Sol for several days at a time exploring on at least 3 occasions and have visited over 1100 systems. So far not seen any stations out there.

Scooping varies ship to ship and depending what equipment you have, the B6 on my Asp allows me to dive in and scoop fast as you can see from my earlier post.
