PC Gamer Article on 1.2 Wings

As it suggests that we'll be able to form impromptu groups on the fly it all sounds rather good. If it has remote inviting that puts people into the right instance automatically rather than comms range, same instance inviting.

To counteract this increase in firepower, the game will respond with tougher challenges.

OK lets hope is in a good way ...

"In 1.2, players will start to see larger, more dangerous signal sources, where single ships would be at serious risk," Sammarco says.

I really hope this is not increasing the extent to instances are tailored to individual players/groups as that would be a big backwards step IMO.

I also getting a sinking feeling that FD are very wedded to the transient USS idea as a content device. They suck (USS's that is - not FD generally).

What's the drawback to the game tailoring events to suit players in an instance?

I hope there's going to be some way to differentiate the extra dangerous USS sites from normal ones otherwise Nobby Nomates over here is going to find his backside handed to him on a platter on a regular basis.

I agree with both of those points.

4 player Wing only ? Suppose it's a start but I hope this is built out over time. And yeah, got a little deflated at the USS tie-in, it'll just be the same random thing only with dialled up NPC AI. I hope there's more variety.

You don't want the game to tailor activity to suit the players in an instance?

No I dont. I want the game to determine USS content from the game world context i.e. the backround sim. I bought ED to play in a shared universe, not a series of my own little personal ones. I hate this kind of auto-leveling in all games. Id rather jump into a USS, get my ass kicked, and come back later better prepared or with some help, rather than have the game just dumb it down for me.

But USS already does that. It combines your missions plus background sim. They should be improved though, but concept as it is workable in my opinion (plus spawned NPCs flying around).

There's also generated and readily visible sites already that would be a good vehicle for more targeted mission content. The USS concept is IMO fine, but it's definitely not a universally applicable concept as is demonstrated by the notorious never-ending fetch-quests.

Ah...so the background story/universe state should affect activity rather than who happens to be online?.....I'm not sure why both these situations can't co-exist.

If the system is about to be overrun by thargoids and wings are in the system then large thargoid armadas spawn. If you're on your own then a suitable smaller threat should spawn. I think there should be some random element to it though it'd be nice to happen across a thargoid convoy all on your own perhaps once in a while.

Hopefully 1.3 will address a lot of the content issues.

I was thinking wings would be something more akin to wings in 'Top Gun'. Like having wing-men. This is wing-like in numbers but more like a loose grouping in effect. Which is why it's called a 'wing', I suppose, because 'wing' suggests a small number of ships, whereas if it was just a group, having just 4 members would seem entirely arbitrary and folks would be asking for more. Ummm. I know what I'm trying to say. Does anyone else?
