Upgrade my sidewinder or start saving for a new ship

What practical effect does the power distributor have? What's different when you have a better one?

Also, as the sidewinder is very small, would it be a good choice for exploration? Decent range and very cheap to fuel up?

It increases the recharge rate for each of the three power types, which gives quicker boosts, increases the amount of times you can fire energy weapons (and speeds up reloads for projectiles), etc etc

I improved my Sidewinder for combat (bounty hunting, chasing, waiting on specified spots), then i buy Cobra MK 3 (sell sidewinder with upgrades) buy some equipment for Cobra and start same tactic with Sidewinder at first (bounty hunting, chasing, waiting on specified spots) AND i have now full upgraded Cobra and 1 mil credit in bank. My next goal is: Python. (same tactic) : ) All this time i am in 3 system maximum. From beginning i didn't go too far :) First military ship and upgrades, then walking through Galaxy.

I upgraded my Sidewinder, it's a cool ship with beams and A rated modules. I can still make more money bounty hunting with it than I can with 26tons of cargo on an Adder - or it seems that way because it's more fun.

Totally agree.

I was avoiding combat like the plague in my heavily upgraded Sidey fearing it's weakness. Not so, one day I just had enough of the interdictions... it kicks ass!!!

If you go the hauler route its pays for itself to throw some basic upgrades onto the sidey just so you can run the combat misisons, have a break from trading and do the fed rep type missions.. Then again you could just buy an adder and not have to think - "where did I leave that damn sidey"

Cobra to Python would be a massively large step. Even fully upgraded you're jumping from a ship worth under half a mil to a ship worth over 50mil. That's an awful lot of combat grinding in a Cobra.

If you're deliberately avoiding trading, then at the very least I suggest going from the Cobra to the Asp first. The Asp is just as viable a weapon as it is a cargo crate.

Personaly i upgraded my sidewinder quite a bit before buying the eagle. The A1 power distributor is a must have and only costs 20k the base power distributor is quite bad on the sidewinder.
After that i picked up the 2B power plant and a Gimbal multicannon and fixed beam laser. In the base sidewinder i would struggle fighting a cobra with just those upgrades i had almost no problems dealing with cobras or vipers.

If you want to do combat i would highly recommend a Eagle it has an extra gun better shields and the best Maneuverability in game. Using the eagle with a fixed beam laser up top and 2 fixed multicannons on the bottom i have been able to take out everything short of a Anaconda.

Upgrade the ship. You can always resell the upgrades at no loss. Better to be flying around in a better ship than a starter ship. When you finally decide to upgrade your ride sell all the upgrades first. Then sell the ship.

Don't underestimate the Sidewinder. It is actually a great ship and as you get better at the game you will realise that when you come back to it. I fly an Asp and have 4 other ships but I also have a fully upgraded sidewinder which is better than the Eagle in my opinion for various reasons. It is a cheap ship to replace and this should never be underestimated.

I've basically stareted again after dying

In my first round of gameplay the minuete I could afford the bigger ship I bought it - the only thing I would upgrade was the FSD to jump further/quicker
.
this time I've been pimping my ship - a pimped Sidewinder is a different beast so in my view well worth doing but still it will reach a limit and need to be upgraded
.
Thing is when you do the new ship can be upgraded quickly on your cash from selling you upgrades unlike what i did before whihc was buy a new ship asap and end up running 10T of food cartridges in a lakon7 cos it was all i could afford
.
Pimp it up is better play
