Exploring - Log off ouside of stations?

Hi all, question as I'm just forgot again to test this, habits die hard...

I'm thinking about kitting out my Asp for exploration and heading off towards the core - what happens if I just log out in some system somewhere, not inside a station? Will I be back at that point next time I log on?
I've never tried that yet, and I don't want to leave my PC running for weeks on end should I really head out, is why I'm asking.

Yes, you'll just come back to a position floating in normal space a safe distance from anything.

I did a 10,000 LY trip to the Lagoon Nebula and back. You can probably trust me :)

As long as you're not in combat, you can save & exit the game safely. When continuing, you'll start somewhere in the same system.

If you save & quit while in combat, your opponent has about 15 seconds of gallery shooting at a sitting duck - you. I would not recommend this.

You can log off any time you want, but you can never leave...

Seriously, yes - just save and exit. Next time you start, you'll be where you left off, albeit not in supercruise. Remember this if you're near a star - when you log back on, if you're already hot, you'll heat up even more charging to supercruise out.

To my knowledge and experience you do end up near the location you logged off at. If you log off in a station after undocking then log back in it has moved you to a point outside the station so logging off outside a station should work the same way.

Thanks all! Will likely head out into the great unknown soon, then.

Take good care with your loadout. The new galactic map will make it a blast though. The biggest threat I found was not paying enough attention when entering a system and getting to close to the star. I think I had a 52% hull on my return. I was starting to get nervous.

Confirmation for clarity on your last specific point just today, as I was outside a station doing some sound testing when the server burped. Reappeared in station normalspace after the burp pretty much where I was.

I toyed around with a couple of things to see what I'd get for what I'm willing to sacrifice; say I get 5 more because I want to keep the ship fully combat-capable (all the complaining about NPC interdictions around populated space? THARGOIDS!?! A good feeling?), so say I get about 30Ly/jump... that means one way to Sagittarius A* will take ~850 jumps instead of 1000... 150 jumps will take a couple of playing sessions for me, but not enough to really bother. I'm not going to make this a race, after all...

But hey, that fuel scoop really sucks! (sucks in fuel like crazy ;) )

You can go with D rated modules for Thrusters, Scanners and Life Support. These are lighter than the A rated ones and will let you jump further.

A word of warning. Head up or down in relation to the orbit planes of the Suns/planets. Just because you stay where you are doesn't mean the rest of the system does. Someone in beta ended up inside a Suns corona on logon due to this, just spend a couple of mins heading out the way before logoff ;)

THAT is very good advice thanks, will keep this in mind!

Reduced the distance to Sagittarius A* to <24kLY today, almost 2000 LY from Sol. No Earth likes yet but a couple of water worlds, and the band of the Milky Way is already getting larger...
