Planning to explore for large profit - Buy Asp or stay with Cobra?

"Exploration for large profit"? Didn't know that was even possible.

Huh? I assume these guys are pretty darned profitable!!!

I have an Asp Explorer ship and it is better much better than the Cobra I was using. Just about anything you want to do with the game. Biggest FSD, biggest guns (for defence) and missiles too! Biggest fuel scoop is best because it is quick to refill.

Don't try refuelling in brown dwarfs. These are dead stars and don't give fuel. You will lose to hull damage getting too close to them. I did!

Good luck. I find Exploring extremely boring!

Don't drink and dwarf.

Seriously. The smaller dwarfs are my most common source of hull damage. They're closer than they look. Give me a beer or two and I'll forget that lesson at every opportunity.

Since update 1.1 AFM's will fix everything but your Hull, Canopy & Power Plant, so I'd highly recommend 1, take 2 if you have enough power.

cobra is agreat choice for short range exploration up to 10k LY, if youre new you can always just cruise round settled space getting data on all the empty systems in between colonies, take all that data bring it to pand and turn it in at one of hte stations here and we will greatly appreciate it.

The Adder. Can't go wrong. 27ly jump range. Cheap to repair incase of any mishaps(which WILL happen). If you run into a problem with the ASP you will pay through the nose for it, making you regret it.
Make it light as possible. Don't need any hardpoints including weapons. Just the barest equipment.
Fuel scoop, basic discov scanner(it's fun actually discovering planets and not being given them on a platter) and detail surface scanner. That's it. Downgrade everything else to make your vessel lighter.
One thing worth mentioning is that flying the Adder makes you feel like an explorer. Smallish windows to peek out of, and the lighting inside the cockpit is just gorgeous. Makes me feel like coop from interstellar. It's incredibly immersive.
But yeah, I would choose the Adder over the Cobra(for exploration) anyday.

I've had problems with the T stars myself. First time I encountered one I actually flew through the colored circle that's around it. My SC shut down and I began to rapidly overheat. Didn't survive it either. I always seem to misjudge my proximity to small compact stars for some reason. Sad part is I don't even drink and fly lol.

Drinking while exploring is the best part of ED lol. Just make a game of it, everytime you enter SC, jump systems or scan have a drink. Soon crashing into stars doesn't even matter, it just becomes "Damnit, not again!" then you SC back to safety and have another drink.

Still with the Cobra. It have more space to have auto field maintence unit, fuel scoop, and the scanners! If you want, you can add a shield generator when you get interdicted within 500 LY. Based on the best setup on the Cobra, you can squeeze 22 LY range. It is pretty good for a mid-range explorer.

Downgrade anything else to get more range!

I've been using this Cobra design with 24ly range and been quite happy with it.

It's armed and has a kill warrant scanner, and doesn't carry a repair unit, so you could exchange the weapons for repair and maybe a heat sink launcher. One thing that helps is that I went with a 3A Power Plant for less weight and good heat characteristics.

You need to go far out to the non-sequence-star clusters and stay out for a while to make it relatively profitable compared to trading but it's a viable alternative if that's what you're interested in. I've only been playing since December and I've cashed in around 50M worth of exploration data.

34M of that is from a few days of scanning neutron stars and black holes almost exclusively. I'm heading back out to get my elite rank right now.
