What on earth is that supposed to mean? Yes you can do it, valid isn't a useful adjective to describe whether you should.

ok maybe I have having a blonde moment but that just went right over my head. OP states piracy is not viable, I suggest it is, I can certainly make more money pirating than I do exploring, but it does not stop me exploring.

trading is of course the biggest money spinner once you get the big ships but that is just the way of it... I still do not see the problem.

so it seems neither of us know what either of us means! :/

Trade in open and take the losses as they come, you're still making a profit overall are you not?

"Trading is generally a means to an end" The end being to buy a better combat ship? and who will you attack? Only ships of equal rank or will you use your superior firepower to rob and steal? As is your right.

If there's one thing FD could do to take the heat off player traders it's letting NPCs carry rares from time to time, it's logical that they would run rares too is it not?

in the beta i thought with the release the NPCs will be nearly as dangerous as players, and that some system will be heavily policed and others full of scary piwats.

turned out not to be true.

I'd go with that :)

In answer to "The cost of trading in open is currently minimal", cost of trading in open if you can not be bothered to find your own trading routes and trade in popular areas are lower. Also likely more dangerous.

Also money/cr are not the be all and end all of the ED, but just a means to an end.

You post like you've not kept abreast of the several other posts that have preceded this one.

There is a general problem, some think it's worthy, others do not, that says players who can't commit a lot of time to the game can't afford to risk the loss of 1m+ 6, 17m+ 7 and I can't remember what the 8 & 9 cost, plus the cargo.

There's a suggestion that the insurance should be changed or compensation issued. Whilst there's no groups, requests for help, police showing up at interdiction points etc... traders have little help.

So please, go read the threads before launching a throwaway comment that doesn't add to the discussion.

Wow, straight into a personal attack. Have you even read the forum rules?

You opinion indicates you bought this game post release. A lot of people prebought this game when offline solo play was advertised. I see no reason to punish people who bought a SP game and want to play it like that.

Personally I play open but a number of recent issues mean that I'm reconsidering this approach. I expect a full solo experience as that is part of what I paid for. I'm fairly sure I won't have a leg to stand on should they change it but you can be sure I'll be very vocal about it.

Silly.

It's a game to be enjoyed by many, not just how you think it should be played.

First off I find it hard to believe anyone with little time to play could afford a type 9 in the first place.
Second I don't believe having better insurance would result in more people playing in open, nor would it stop people boosting directly out of an interdiction.

Instead of making the game easier it should be made harder.

- Pirates should face tougher sanctions - Bounties should be worked off via fed/imperial missons....time is worth more than money in this game, more effective police response, Larger stations should turn hostile, open fire on sight if you're wanted.

- Separate solo and open

- Implement SOS Beacons

- Improve Defensive weapons..limpets, booby trapped cargo, rear view camera so we can lock on missiles while running.

- NPC wingmen

I'm sure all this is coming.(fingers crossed with open/solo)

I trade in Open and have done since Gamma, it's my choice to do so as the uncertainty is one of the things that I enjoy. I don't understand the requirement to incentivize something that it basically a player choice.

By all means, add all sorts of online rewards, and charge a monthly fee for it. See how many people are actually interested in online PVP.

So what happens with wingmen who protect you in Open? Here the trader just needs to rig for running while the escorts do the dirty work for a few minutes more until the trader jumps.

Recent answers from Michael Brookes to direct questions on the topic:

Will at any time solo and private group play be separated into a different universe/database from open play? It's kind of cheap that you can be safe from many things in solo, like player blockades and so on, and still affect the same universe.
No.

Michael

Thanks for that clarity Michael.

Are you in a position to confirm that group switching between the three game modes will remain as a feature of the game?
We're not planning on changing that.

Michael

Hi Micheal

I know you said that solo/group and open will always use the same universe, can you also say that there will be no specific perks in playing in one mode over another? i.e bigger profit from trading in open or bigger bounties?
None are planned at the moment.

Michael

....If I was part of a pirate wing I'd leave one player in SC to catch the freighter when it jumps back up into SC.

OP is completely right.
I've done all my trading in open so far (Entrepreneur) but once submitting also incurs the long FSD cooldown, I'm moving to solo for it.
And in open me and a friend will grab a Viper, interdict every expensive ship we see, and if they're set up for trading, we'll inflict multi-million repair costs on them before they can jump away. It's gonna be fun!
