Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

BASICALLY

the game should have been Open OR Solo

with no switching, but multiple save accounts.

the switching is the problem, all this work is to fix the symptoms but no cure for the underlying problem

The benefits of the current solo/open situation still elude me.

You don't get to define the benefits others see. I like being able to play the game i paid for with my own money in whatever way I happen to feel like at the time. You need no more information than that to completely understand.

This split of the game is inevitable as long as there is solo to retreat to....or as long as solo is easier than open. I don't attack every ship I see, I regularly offer escort, I try not to "steal" kills at nav points.....I do interdict players if they look tasty.

Who's to say how much "some PvP" is? According to players like Gasoline it's too much when attacked in a freighter (prompting a long term retreat to solo) But then coming back in a viper is back safely in "some PvP" territory.

I wouldn't usually tell anyone how to play the game but if they're also supporting moves to make the game even easier for themselves?

Limiting the earnings in solo could work, would that tempt more players into open?

You mistake opinion for fact too much for my liking. If you desire PvP so badly then why not explore other games where PvP is the focus?

It means I can play how the mood suits me. If I am sociable or if I am just wanting some down time or if I am feeling agressive.
It means a solo player can still play with their friends who generally want to play in ALL for a few hrs rather than actively block them
it means I can play without having access to decent internet (which happens a lot). Elite solo uses a few K.
it means if a huge exploit is found and it takes FD a while to fix it, people can duck out and wait for a fix

All of which could be done with separate modes. You'd have a solo CMDR and an open CMDR.

I'm not sure why people wouldn't buy skins from the store either.

But given that Michael has said that there will not be a split, keep asking for one seems pointless. There are no good reasons for the split, only bad ones. Fix the underlying problem, and solo would not be easy mode.

It's probably more to do with cost to FD rather than any thing to do with breaking the game.

Some of have lives and so limited time. I'm not going to waste that doubling the grind.

And sure - you cannot understand why people in solo won't buy skins when there is no-one to see them. Sure you can't. It's a complete mystery.

2 CMDRS? I envy your amount of spare time. It is unlikely I will ever reach Elite with only 1 character, but to be forced to start from scratch with 2?!

why not look at the game mechanics and if you like them support the game, and if not look for a what you do like the mechanics for that way those of us who bought the game KNOWING the mechanics do not get done over by people coming in and trying to force the game in such a way as to do over those it is working for?

the mode switching was promised as early on as 2013 iirc

You misunderstand me. The issue isn't with PvP, or players who PvP, it's with the game. Nothing wrong with piracy. Nothing wrong with just wanting to shoot some players either.

The problem is that currently, you can very easily cripple or destroy expensive vessels in what is supposed to be "secure" space (i.e. Sol, or Achenar, or other multi-billion population High Tech systems) and set the victim back many hours of incredibly tedious grind without any consequences to you whatsoever. You can't even do that in Eve for god's sake - Because CCP realized early on that that's a bad idea.

I agree... sort this and I will be fully back "home" in ALL. medium term consequences for player actions, much like a killer in real life would face consequences.

I'd prefer to see NPC buffed and interdictions increased to the extent that carrying weapons in Solo would be required when trading (as it was int eh original). As a necessary consequence of this the T6,7&9 would need some tweaks to improve survivability or they will become redundant without the ability to hire escorts (either players or AI).

I really think you should consider the ramifications of splitting open vs. solo modes.

I think isolating the two game modes would render open play a virtual wasteland, with solo/private groups being the vast majority of the player base.

Hell, just the docking situation alone, with no ability to enter solo, would cause me to kiss off open play completely...

You'd buy the skin for open though right? Maybe some people would play solo only.....FD would have to find another way to make funds, adding an external view would be enough. This is not a valid reason for not splitting the game.

Also, I play an hour a day if I'm lucky....if I die I die, I'll start again. Games have always had a game over screen.

FD should just remove MP from the service altogether.

If you read a couple of pages back, quineloe makes a great argument why this isn't really that viable an option. Trading ships shouldn't be able to compete with fighters in a combat setting.

If I was forced to choose a mode i'd probably choose Star Citizen. But failing that it would be Solo and then FD wouldn't get another cent off of me.

Split the game and that's one reneged promise too many and i'll in all probability go play a game made by a less scuzzy company.

They kind of are now, if you're out beyond the safe systems. And with the pending change to interdiction escapes it'll probably be even more important.

For everyone surely?

Apparantly not?

You want to play in open, when it suits you.

And the problem with that is ...? And try and answer that not from your perspective or using your own subjective sense of what is 'fair'.

Then I'll tell you I'll play the game I was sold and the game I purchased how I want, when I want.
