Communicating in game - Do you chat with strangers? Friends only?

Do you find the silence of space to be more than you can handle, or are you talking online like a trucker with an orangutan riding in the co-pilot seat?

In a continuing effort to encourage people to make contact with other CMDRs, I'd like to ask what keeps you from pushing that Comm button. Or, if you're a chatty person, what do you think would help break the ice? This isn't a poll, because, frankly, I don't even have a clue what the most popular reasons might be. But I want to know.

This is also a shameless way of promoting some lists I've put together to help give each occupation its own sense of identity through the language they share. These are based, at least in part, on actual slang terms from Earth in similar professions, to help ground it in something familiar. Maybe you'll find using these will give you an excuse to open those comm channels?

So just a tip of the hat/salute kind of thing. I sometimes do that too. Really depends on if the reply I get suggests the CMDR is busy and on their way somewhere else.

I'll say hello, and if the CMDR wants to chat further I will oblige. A CMDR in the Mobius group entered the docking port a wee bit fast and nearly caused a collision between us, but rather than becoming a scene, he plotely chatted and apologised, and some nice idle chat was had. It's fun to just say hi to another CMDR in this cold dark place sometimes.

Also tried the voice chat with Adept a couple of days ago for half an hour, and found the effect awesome!

I talk to other CMDRs all the time. Usually asking about the area, or warning other CMDRs about pirates, terrorists, and crazy people. Usually just a few lines, sometimes i get in a long convo with people though.

Asking something simple usually gets a responce though. Asking an asp "was the repair bill worth not giving up your cargo" gets no responce.

No flyers in backyards sytems

flying around in the outer area systems there are not many flyers to talk to.
I did have one flyer ask me what I was doing in that system, first time in weeks
I have one friend but seams he is on a different time area and is mostly off line

I do not talk to any strangers, unless I am docked and in the hangar.

If open world pvp games of any type have taught me only one thing, it is that 'friendly?' is an attempt to get your hands off of your controls to gain the early initiative in conflict, and so far Elite: Dangerous has been no exception to that rule.

Honestly? I'd blame your handle on that one, dude. Name like that you're just asking to get shot! ;)

More seriously, I do sometimes wonder if that would be a problem. However I haven't had it happen to me yet. Even when I was attacked by a pirate, he stopped firing once I opened communications. But he's no doubt the exception ;)

Follow up point for those with few friends online - what do you see as the downside of friending anyone you have had a chat with before?

I think the problem is seeing "friends" as in Facebook, where you're opening up and allowing access to personal information. But really it just makes it easier to contact them later, even if they're not in the same system.

I learned that lesson before Elite: Dangerous was even a gleam in Mr. Braben's eyes, I am curious Mossfoot, is this the only open world pvp game you have ever played?

Pretty much, so I only have my own experience to fall back on here, as well as the stories I hear on this forum (which range from excellent to nightmarish in terms of encounters)

I sometimes send a *wave*, but usually the other player or myself are busy docking by that point, and no chatting happens afterwards.

I sometimes have that problem. Just about to send a hail when "blink" they're at the station and I can't contact.

Did however make a new friend today, talked about exploring a bit (he's also in a Lakon 6 and knew of a black hole/neutron star area he wanted to go to but wasn't able to. I told him I'd have a beer in his honor if I made it ;) Even got a snapshot of the encounter

Odd thing was his CMDR name didn't come up on my end the whole time. Weird glitch.

I chat to anyone and everyone.
I live in western Canada, so there aren't many people around, seemingly. Right now it's 5:14am in the UK!

I chatted with an excellent bounty hunter CMDR from NZ tonight.
And if you are on my friends list and I'm nearby, I'll come help if I can, if you get in trouble.

Open is fun.
It's not all about pirates.
I'm in Empire space well away from the main trade routes.

I'm as asocial in the game as I am in real life; the only difference between the two is that I actually like having other players around me (I just don't care to engage with them, if I don't have to). :)

Heck, i didnt know the chat worked!? Gave up on it weeks ago.

I'm always happy to chat with anyone. Especially if they have the same ship that I'm currently flying. The equipment and tactics are always a nice first topic. Plus I chat with my friends while trading and exploring, because it helps to kill time. :D

I do want to point out, though, that speaking of random strangers, only one out of five even answers my greetings, which is kind of sad. But I tell myself that they just don't pay attention to the comms.

Same, I tried using the comms a couple times with a stranger and got my messages bounce back. Couldn't figure out why so haven't bothered to try for a long time. Tried sending messages to friends and they don't seem to see it anyways (no sound notification and so easy to miss when using TrackIR), so we just communicate through Steam now.

Works fine for me BUT unless a person is friended, just about anything can disrupt a communication - if they drop out of FSD, go to another system, go in a hanger, etc... so if you're having a good conversation and are both on the move I'd advice sending off a Friend request quick.

I would chat to friends on my list but it doesn't seem to work. No connection. Have a few War Thunder squad mates I can't seem to chat to

Never use it , proximity chat , would be ok , with que responsive, Give me your Cargo , Look out , Duck !!, Follow me, GO away, but targeting someone and saying blah blah , no thanks , I'm not nine, the telephone isn't that intriguing anymore
