DK2 just arrived today. Can I squeeze more out of this? or do i need a new card?

Any 970 will do. So I take it you don't have a mic then. Yes because my wife does too. Why are we so blessed?
I do! I have an AntLion Mic. Haven't really used it yet though. Just got voice attack, and haven't had enough time with it to figure it out. Maybe it's because I am sick, but it doesn't seem to be able to understand any word I say.

And as for the wifes? No idea... luck sum-es we are!

Given the talk on these pages in the last few days re Galaxy note 5 how do you know CV1 will not be 4k do you work for OR or Samsung?
We would love to know your info if you do!

Because I have seen a half dozen interviews with the CEO of oculus, and he either flat out said it wont be 4k, or heavily insinuated guarding the prospected specs. (dont recall, it's been a while) 1440p is the res he CEO himself has hinted at. He has even stated that the specs of the prototype cresent bay shares the general specs that the release version will be released with, and CB's display is 1440p. So am I 100% sure? Nope...but I'll bet you any amount of money you want. We can swap paypal addys, and loser pays up.

As long as its another gtx970, yes you can. Even if its from a from a different manufacture (say the first is EVGA and the second is MSI) it'll work fine. Also if its a overclocked version of that same card, sli is still good to go.
The only thing that wont work is lets say a 6gb version of the card comes out and you buy it. If you were to SLI it to your 4gb version, it will only read the lower ram of the two cards. So it wont utilize the extra 2g from the higher end card.
Thanks for this info. The 970 will be enough for the DK2 for the next year. If two 970s wont be enough for CV1, it didn't cost me enough money to worry about selling it and SLIing whatever the best card is next year. If a pair of 970s WILL play the cv1 well, then I'm golden.

There are lots of hints like this all over the web, if you know how to pay attention.

Nate: We do want to see major resolution improvements over the next 2, 3, 4 iterations of the product. Abrash talks a lot about wanting to head towards 4k or 8k and that sort of thing
Norm: his benchmarks
Nate: Exactly
Norm: Maybe not a viable thing from a commercial stand point today
Nate: Exactly

A 4K Rift (or something similar) will happen - but it won't be CV1. There just isn't the hardware out there to make that practical for the vast majority of people.

CV1 will be all about getting VR into as many hands as possible. That means relatively low entry point.

I think the resolution will be much the same as DK2, but with extra advances in screen technology & possibly on-board processing to eliminate screen door & judder. They are the big issues at the moment.

However, Oculus are currently getting into bed with Hollywood, so that will probably drive it in the future... more so than games.

All IMO of course. :p

Going 970 is certainly an option. I think I might have to get myself a bigger power supply if I go that route. (not sure, id need to research a bit.)

Hi,
I upgraded from 470 to 970 (and 980 shortly after) and measured the Power demand at the socket. The 970 uses exactly as much power as the 470 did. My system GTX 470/970 and i7 920 OC use about 380W under full (gaming) Load. with my 980 I need a bit above 410W under the same testing conditions.

Point is, if you used to play on a old Fermi 470/480/570/580 Card (remember how everybody shunned 4XX for it´s power hunger) you´re absolutely fine to upgrade to a 970/80 with your Power Supply!

Hope that helps.
best,
Fred

Is it? I didn't think they had confirmed what the resolution of CB was - in fact, Nate was extremely guarded & gave an answer worthy of a politician when asked the direct question from what I've seen.

What CB does do though apparently is eliminate screen door. Remember that the DK2 is 1080p, which is "good enough" - but the screen technology means it looks much worse than that as you're seeing the space between the pixels.

It gave me some hope that CV1 will actually be usable on my rig, as DK2 just about is now (2 x 7870s CF).

'Grats on the card etc btw. Enjoy. :)

A mate of mine recently splurged on a 980, and what he found was that the card needed two independent 12v rails. So if your PSU can handle that - you're golden. If not, new PSU time...

if CV1 is 4K 90hz I will eat my hat!.
imo the best (believable) case scenario will be 1440P but given how oculus have suddenly started to distance themselves from the "we need to increase resolution" stance that they took back when DK2 1st launched, and are now saying "its not about resolution its about reducing SDE which is easier to do with lower resolutions**", and "improving presence with better tracking and higher framerates" I would not be THAT shocked if CV1 was not even that.

**SDE is caused because you can see the screen matrix between the pixels, so increasing res can actually make this issue worse according the Palmer lucky.

Now that I have played the game in the rift... there is absolutely no way I can go back to playing on a monitor. I just can't believe what I am seeing. Playing in the rift literally feels like I am sitting in a space ship. I am in awe. I can't BELIEVE how massive the interior cabin ceiling is inside my type 6. On the monitor, sure, you can tell its a larger/taller cabin, but in the rift, christ, the ceiling looks like it's 15 feet high! I look out through the glass... and the walls of the underground docking bay feel like they are a good 50 or 60 feet away. On a 2d monitor, it all seems completely flat. Redeploy back to the surface before launching... and looking up.. the interior of the space station feels MASSIVE! The size of the Radar on the HUD feels a lot bigger, and it feels much further out in front of you. I look at it in the rift and think... its big. Seems like its 2 or 3 feet across. You just can't put it into words. The sense of scale and distance the Oculus gives you completely changes the game. It is the most amazing video game experience I have ever had.

Welcome to the dawning of a new era of gaming entertainment Cpt America :D Completely agree with the above! Ive been rifting for about 18 happy months now in dk1 and dk2. If you would like a list of great games and demos that work on dk2 PM me and I'll give you my top ten :)

Thanks for the info, Fred! I was a little concerned, but now that you say that, I do remember that the 470gtx is too a bit of a power hog, and my current PSU handles it just fine. I will save my next psu for a whole new build some time in the future, perhaps with a new sli mobo and second 970.

Well... I think you really need to read between the lines. I am not certain, of course,... but going on what I have seen in interviews with people that have used CB, they seem to hint that they THINK the resolution looks better. Also, there were massive improvements in the optics as well. Sit that side-by-side with the fact that the moble oculus is 1440... and it just flat out makes the most sense. I would put money on 1440 over 1080. Either is totally possible... but there is no way in hell it will be anything higher than 1440.

Ok then it shouldn't be a problem hooking up in game, we'll just mic it. I'll add you tonight. Haven't checked how far away you are from me (I'm hanging round Alpha Centauri until I get my sol permit, I promised my wife I'd fly her to the moon because she let me play among the stars).

Have you done the windows voice training? Try doing it a few times.

If you are into star trek I can send you all my voice commands. I've based them around star trek style commands and I've put in a lot of computer beeps from star trek appropriate to each action. I've also done some clever macros like giving you an "unable to comply" message if you try to toggle something already toggled like microphone mute.

<snip!> It is the most amazing video game experience I have ever had.

Have to say, I agree with this completely.

And the last 2 times time I felt this way, were:-

1) playing Shadow Of The Beast for the first time on my Amiga A500 with is parallax scrolling - awesome!

and

2) the first time I got to 36 fps AND used a steering wheel, in GPL (Grand Prix Legends)....

Enjoy matey!

In game Controls menu SS set to 2, Nvidea CP is set to 2 also. Runs suprisingly well like this but cannot be right. It should be one or the other right?

From what I've read, they are mutually exclusive. Do see a change when you activate the in game SS?

Yes it definitely gets clearer but like I said at .5, 1, 1.5 or 2 in game it seems to work quite well and I see the clarity on the screen as I move up each one and hit apply As soon as I hit 3 though things go south quickly the mouse has a mind of its own at that point difficult to even hit the Yes/NO do you want to keep these settings? I will have to do some experimenting this weekend as I really have not tried too much experimentation having too much fun actually playing and working my way towards SOL. Need a better ship though that's for sure not easy to plan routes through Core systems in a Sidewinder with fuel needs. Damn interdictions quite often through there also mostly NPC A-wipes

Thanks all and mainly drkaii for your tests. I drove same ones after your and got to same conclusion which is not really the one I wanted: I can't use any SuperSampling mode, DSR, or manual resolution creation without going under the needed 75fps and without sacrificing too much settings to try to reach them again. So I'm stick to 1x which is not that bad after all, and I'm able to play with settings at high (so sometimes high is the maximum and sometimes Ultra is the maximum so I'm at High) and with even shadow High. Only thing I turned off is Blur and Light Blur, which I can't stand anyway even in 2D mode, and one notch down the Oculus slider quality to keep 75fps even deep in station (I used Burell Station at Sol as testing). Off course, going inside big Station go lower than 75 fps (average 60 fps) so Judder, but it seems expected and I'm not alone. In any case In space and Station (not big one) I can keep a pretty good quality nearly maxed and my precious 75fps. I guess the fact I can't use any SS more than 1x is due to my GTX 970 or even more certainly to my old "CPU" (2 1/2 Years) I7 3770K even OC at 4,4. Note I remember I have a stock tool to automatically give some boost to my "MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G" and I never used it (shame on me) so I should have some small room here. In any case, pretty happy now than I set all graphics settings and have pretty good quality :) BTW To drive tests for each graphical options I first choose SS x 1,5 to go under the 75fps so I was able to see the impact of each other one between the current value and the auto capped 75fps. It will be easier if ED allow us to remove the Vsync so fps will be free. Currently you can set to off but it's get back to Vsync Yes right after...

I'm shocked you are getting judder more than me with your rig. Yours is better than mine. You should bare one thing in mind: a lot of judder goes away after 30 seconds or so so make sure you are patient in your tests.

Off topic: how long did it take you to get your sol permit? How many missions?

Nevermind, I'm dumb. SLI was disabled. I think you can guess the original content of this post. :D

No two cards require independent 12v rails. They only require one rail with high enough available current.

His problem is in fact multiple rails. some of the best power supplies on the market only use one single rail.

Getting the permit is super easy. All I did was head TOWARDS sol, into a federation system. Went into the bullitin board, and started taking those "advancement in navy opportunity" mission you see (or whatever they are called), where you have to go on a small mission, and don't make a penny. After 3 or 4, you will get your permit. Took me a couple hours and vuala.

Cool, thanks. I just got my first one but I don't have time till the weekend to do it. I was hoping it was just one, but 3 or 4 isn't too bad :)
