To all explorers - do you only scan stars or entire systems?

I meant the people on the thread. They are all only going water worlds and earth-like planets. Never take a look at metal planets or gas giant moons. lol

Edit: This is what you get if you look at metal planets.

Hmm very interesting...didn't really know how to spot terraformable planets... truth be told, thought they were to look earth like, or water.... what description do you get in the scan when you find one? what do they read as?

Nothing special in the scan report. You have to check the System Map to see the info: The planet is a candidate for terraforming.

Two methods:

A) Psychopath NPC camping out on primary star. Scoop, Advanced Discovery Scan during scoop, run. Try to Detail Scan the system primary if the NPC reacts slowly.

B) No hostiles, Detail Scan Everything.

You have to scan them individually. There is no sign on the map that shows they are terraform-able until you can them.

Thanks a bunch everyone!

I myself scan everything except roid belts.

"Stupid" question: When you first enter a new system, and use the Advanced Discovery Scanner, everything will be revealed.

Do you visually determine what type a planet is? (Metal, Ice, Earth-like, Water, etc.) Or is there another trick to determine what type a planet is, before going there to scan it?

System Map and the HUD hologram are your friends.

Visually on the system map find you the water and earth-like worlds. Size and distance from the star give clues to whether they are terraformers.

If you are the first to explore the system, nothing is revealed.
If the system is already discovery, partial info is revealed.
(Oops. Wrong fact. lol) It is shown as unexplored when it is discovered by someone is because you don't have all the data and you have the chance to scan them for profit.

You have to look at the Nav screen, and cycle through the targets. Gas Giants will usually be obvious, as are stars. So are the asteroid belts.

But, you have to get in close enough for a detail scan to be sure. The inner system will normally be metal planets; they would not survive otherwise. They are worth money. Cheepy The Detail Scanner usually wakes up at three gravity rings or more, for most objects. The 500-750 light second area is where you would look for terran type objects. Gas giants are worth money. Their satellites are another matter. Anything way out of the plane of the ecliptic is probably a rogue captured body. Probably not worth it.

Distant stellar companions with their own systems of bodies follow the same pattern. Only you can determine if you are OCD enough to fly the 400,000 light seconds to them. Stars will detail scan at 6,000 light seconds or less. 1,200 credits each. Prepare for wear and tear costs.

Or you can full stop, see if there are NPCs. If so, exit SC, wait about 5-10 sec, and re-enter SC. The NPC disappear and if you are lucky, NPC will not spawn again.

*sigh*

I hate having to spend 15-40+ minutes to reach faraway bodies, but I really hate leaving unfinished business behind...

I just feel it's so "cheap" to just scan the stars and the "low-hanging fruits", and leave the rest.

If it's unexplored I explore everything, including the asteroids. If it's previously explored, I'll scan the main star, and any earth like or really close metal rich planets.

I've left stars and planets unexplored if someone else already scanned the main star, even if the planets were completely ignored. With tagging, it's all or nothing for me. Scanning someone else's claimed stuff is just a bit of change in the pocket, and I have a Type 9 back home For my walking around money.

To Boldly Go - where others have gone before - and do a proper job!

(even the rubble)

If you fly efficiently around the system, depending on the number and distance of bodies, then you fly a circle, or a figure 8, or a double circle. It's like the electron shells.

There's a 100ly sphere around Eravate that I mapped - and I probably wasn't first in many (if any) of those systems.

(and the NPC Bounties are the icing on the cake)
