Leaving Letter Box Space Stations In a Lakon 7 - Any Tips

Hi Guys

I have 3 times crashed and died in my Lakon 7 trying to exit the space station letter box (admittedly at high speed).

I try to align the bottom of the screen to the bottom of the letter box but would appreciate if there are any tips on any alignment or views that I can use to ensure that I am on the correct trajectory for leaving without killing myself.

Thanks in advance

The Lakon 7 isn't as big as you might think. You can get through aiming for the centre. You're probably going too low.

I final got my Type 7 last night.

Tip, keep down as you go through the slot. It took me a while to work out that if it looks like you are in the middle, you'll scrape the ship's top but if it looks like you'll hit or scrape the underside, you'll sail through.

And take it easy until it become a natural departure, not too much speed.

Here you go...

I have the feeling that the cockpit position as viewed from the outside isn't exactly the same as the cockpit position when actually steering it...

Use shields ! Try to be low and lower the speed to the blue range until you are comfortable with it. I tried a docking computer to get hands free but it's not great. I run it for a two days with docking computer from time to time but when i upgraded thrusters and fsd it started responding quite well. ...relatively speaking.

Nah, it's exactly as it is. Fly through the letterbox low and it's fine.

It feels weird at first, as though you're going to hit, but if you fly really low you'll never clip the box. The opposite is true for the Anaconda.

Cockpit location awareness is essential for docking larger ships.

You're kidding, right? :)

Just remember the cockpit is right at the bottom, and you'll be fine.

I regularly share the letterbox with other craft, and apart from a few scrapes, have no trouble.

I know for a fact that a T6 and a T9 both fit side by side in the letterbox, can anyone tell me if a T7 and T9 can also fit side by side. I will be using my T7 to trade with shortly and I just need to know before I try it on my own, which i will just to find out. Oh and on that note T6 does fit sideways in the box:)

Player steered T9? Most likely... still some space to left and right when flying in the midst. NPC T9? Wouldn' take my chances.

I usually aim for the centre and burst out at full speed with a boost as well. T7 isn't as big as you think it is. Now a T9 on the other hand... I wouldn't even risk taking a T9 through at more than half speed.

T6 and T9 will pass each other in the mail slot, even if the T9 is smack in the centre. A T7 won't if the T9 is in the centre, it's just that little bit too wide and needs the T9 to move aside just a little bit. They will pass each other if both are player controlled but NPC's are greedy and try to take up the whole slot to themselves.

On the windscreen there are the two main window frame bars that run down in front of you.....about a quarter of the way from the bottom are two small areas where the screen frame widens out to meet the frame from the sides. I tend to line up those small wider areas of the frame with the metal rungs at the bottom of the 'toast rack' as I pass through. That seems to position the T7 just about right. Try and keep those areas of the frame 'sliding' along the bottom of the docking cage as you pass through. The cockpit is slung fairly low on the T7, so generally you want to keep low as you pass through, as you know. The only other advice I'd give is if you're leaving the station then remember to give your ship some clockwise rotation as you exit the slot to match the rotation of the station.....when you leave, you lose your auto rotation.

As others have said, put 4 pips into your shields and keep your speed fairly low (I generally have the speed in the 40s as I pass through). Low speed and max shields should avoid ship destruction. Try and be square on to the letterbox from a fair distance out so that you aren't trying to come in at an angle or make drastic last minute adjustments. Oh, and remember the T7 is quite a long ship, so give it a second or two after your cockpit has passed through before you alter your course.
