Fiction What do folks think of the novels?

Considering grabbing some of the Elite e-books, but I've had mixed luck on novels based on game worlds - some are decently good, others are just horrid. So to people who have read them - are they worthwhile? Any particularly good ones I should try?

read one of them they ae a good read

Read Kate's Mostly Harmless first, it's easy to get into and enjoyable. Wanted and Docking is Difficult are ok too. Can't remember the name of the other one, begins with N, it's pretty poor, like a 50 Shades of Elite.
I have Mochael Brookes' book also but if honest its on par with the latter of the bunch because of his writing style, there's no flow to it. Persevere and it's ok.

My advice, read Kate's first.

I'm guessing the style will be Space Opera mainly - similar to Honor Harrington or Miles Vorkosigan (although hopefully with less overuse of the word 'idiopathic'...)?

I've read Gideon Defoe's "Docking is Difficult" and a couple of the short stories from "Tales From The Frontier".

"Docking is Difficult" was okay. I've always considered the Elite universe to be slightly insane (some things just don't make sense) and Defoe doesn't hide from the non-sense.

From "Tales From The Frontier" I really enjoyed "Crossing the Line", "The Comets Trail" (which featured in a Galnet news article) and "The Easy Way Out."

I would definitely recommend "Tales" as a primer into the Elite universe... I'm sure you'll find at least one of the stories worth your time.

It's basic space opera set within the Elite universe. If you're looking for complex plot and depth then they're not really written that way. Something like The Empyrean Age by Tony Gonzales for EvE was a good tie-in novel. I still enjoy revisiting The Dark Wheel from time to time. The main issue with Elite is that the lore isn't fully fleshed out so there's really very little to draw on. Apart from the Thargoid stories from FE2/ FFE and the original Dark Wheel what else is there ? You could write a generic short story set it space and as long as you threw in ship names it would fit into the Elite sphere.

Maybe over time FD will devote more attention to fleshing out humanity's expansion in 3300 but for now we make it up as we go along.
