Destroyed by Station, But Not in the Usual Way

Picture this: a Python fully loaded with rares. Hugh Dock, anarchy system. Course plotted, landing gear retracted, fly out of the station. Then BAM!

Destroyed by one of those ridonculous arms that extend from some cubic stations.

Consider this a learning opportunity, and don't make any turns for a few kilometers after you leave the toaster slot.

Cheers

Hehehe the hammers of doom gotcha? That sucks.

Look into getting a head tracker (you can get the "EdTracker" for about $20, or you can even hack them out of an old webcam for free) and start looking out the sides of your ship.

Hit those myself (but not hard enough to get through shield).

Head Tracking for the win. (I turn mine off when looking at the station menus and have on a number of occasions only remembered to turn it on to see what it was I just hit :/)

What do you think those 'ridonculous arms' (sorry couldn't resist) are? I was thinking they may be for ships to tether to that are too large to dock inside as station?

They are obviously way out there to provide the illusion of strong gravity, so I would guess its some sort of industrial process that works better under great weight.

The arms are the same diameter as the large rings on the bigger stations... which give 1g or earth normal. Could be for industrial processes, or simply more expensive living quarters.

There about 7km long, You were a bit unlucky but you wont get caught out by that again, it's a bit scary when Ed has a hiccup and drops you out of sc well within hammer range.

I got hit by those twice in total while trading in my T7.

First time (before v1.1 collision changes) it didn't even drop my shields.

Second time (after v 1.1) - kaboom!! I actually had a laugh about that one, 216t of Gold gone. What can you do but laugh?

Solution to this if trading from one of these stations: Target the station (not your hyperspace destination) prior to launch, boost out of station, exit mass lock, enter supercruise (you now cannot hit the station), re-select target destination, align with it, hyperspace. Bit more of a faff but it beats losing millions of credits ;-)

hehe I got hit by one of those once in beta. I'd just jumped in to the station with my asp and a second later got walloped. No chance to avoid it hehe
