Ok, FD. Is it Achernar or Achenar?

What shall it be called in Elite: Dangerous?

There's no question. It's Achenar.

Well I certainly question that!

I prefer choice 1 since its what i am used to call it from when i played Frontier (elite II) and its easyer to say. And if the Emperor called it that i am honored to follow his lead. All hail the Emperor.:)

Naturally if the Emperor says so then I of course concur! Glad to see that respect for his Majesty, Jan. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the mistake of some low-level cartographer or <gasp!> Federal sympathizer aiming to sow confusion and doubt.

There is no question. There is a real star called Achernar. Achenar was a typo. End of.

Frontier is going for a realistic astronomically correct starmap, so it will be Achernar regardless of this poll. All views to the contrary will be expunged from official documents and war will be declared on any systems failing to adopt the correct spelling.

Cheers,

Drew.

It was already decided earlier in this thread (by me) that anyone daring to question the will of the First Illustrious Emperor of the Empire - who knowingly chose to rename the home system of his new empire as Achenar - will reveal you as a traitor to the cause and you will be sentenced to lose the feeble growth that you call your "beard".

So says the First Emperor!

But the typo'd version has so much more character than the non-typo'd version... I can believe in an Empire originating from Achenar. Achernar sounds more like a republic to me.

But I guess you're privy to insider info?

If FD weren't aiming for a high degree of stellar accuracy, to the point of ensuring that nearby stars are in their correct positions relative to Sol and whatnot, I wouldn't care so much. However, given the aforementioned quest for accuracy it strikes me as silly that they wouldn't correct a spelling mistake no matter how much lore we build up around it. It's still a mistake. :)

It's 1300 years in the future. It's almost silly to believe any of these names will stay the same. They won't be lights in the sky any more - they'll be people's homes. Everything out there will get renamed when people start to colonise and claim the stars.

Alliance lacky, how dare you feign support for our glorious empire!

Typical alliance bureaucracy and obfuscation!

No offence,

Drew.

They will stay the same, you've never met the IAU have you? ;)

The problem lies with those indigenous Imperials with the strange accent as they have the middle r as being silent so when the first mappers went there, they obviously went along with the way it was pronounced and didn't notice the huge "Welcome to Achernar" sign above their heads.

Fair enough, but my response would be that Achernar isn't just some random, nice sounding name. It has a root in Arabic and has a meaning ("The end of the river", that being the river of the constellation Eridanus). I find it hard to believe that future colonists, wanting to name their new home's sun, wouldn't just keep that heritage. And if they did decide to rename it, why on Earth (Capitol, sorry) would they just remove an R from the name and call it a day? That's just lazy. :)

It says in Wikipedia that Achernar, in the video game Frontier: Elite II, is the Empire's capital star system.

So it must be true.

Nah nah na nah nah.

More importantly, should FD move Achenar from it's current 36.75 to a distant 139; which is more scientifically accurate? :p

Fuel for the fire
They have already told us that star positions will be changed to the new data. Maybe there's room for both Achernar the real star and Achenar the Empire home then?
...but, as you mention fuel, the prospect of a civil war in the Empire... Bad for big chief Duval, bad for tribe, but good profit for my employers.
