Proposal Discussion What to take and what to leave...

Hello fellow Commanders,

So, since I'm bored at work, I thought about starting a little discussion again... so, here goes:

What (science fiction) movies/games/novels should Elite Dangerous take a inspiration from... be it ideas, settings, technologies, etc.? I already brought up the idea of how Mass Effect handles stealth in space combat... what would you like to see?

PS: I know, E.D will, and should be it's own game, but still: There are good ideas already out there...

I'm a big fan of Dune, and I think the political intrigue and court power struggles in there would go well with the Empire in Elite. Feudal lords on worlds all struggling to maintain power and influence while while engaged in a relationship of mutual loathing and distrust with a central Imperial power. :)

BTW, I'm at work, not working myself. ;)

I think that ED should borrowed the black monolith of 2001 the odyssey of the space, so that we can prostrate ourselves in front of, when the game will go out

I think some of John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" ideas would fit quite well. For example the concept of having several species with similar living requirements trying to colonise similar worlds and each of them trying to displace the others.
Perhaps, stretching a point, discovering the Thargoids are seeders of life and interested to see how it all pans out, and like playing with their creations via battles. Similar to his consu race.

I'd also fall off my chair laughing if I stumbled across Red Dwarf somewhere out there just lumbering along.

I like Dune too, I love political intrigue :)
I'm a fan of the anime Cowboy bebop but it is not fit to Elite ;)

Another big fan of Dune, but for when your so rich you can afford it a Magrathea type planet to design your space station/planet to retire on (not that you will use it or be near it!)

Not fit for Elite? Nonsense! Elite can and will be anime-d up if I have anything to say about it! :D

Well, as I have mentioned in the past...

The mechwarrior universe. If anyone has read the books (I listened to all 61 novels or so), this gives a primary idea for all the possibilities for missions stemming from politics. Remember, with the exception of a single book, Humanity is the only sentient life in the universe.

Space Opera: It was, hands down, the most in depth space based RPG I have never had the opportunity to play. The rules, for the most part were so indepth that they lost 90% of the gaming audience who wasn't intelligent enough to follow them.

Traveler and Mega Traveler: There were a crap load of modules and content that are excellent resources for those that wanted material. They had a set of deck plans that were designed for 15mm figures that would have been fantastic to have converted to design.

Space Law: by Iron Clad Enterprises. Their crit charts were the most extensive, bar none.

I can easily see spinoff games from Elite cropping up, bringing a new genre of RPG games and products and look forward to them as well.

Sci-fi novels

Competing interstellar powers, active conflicts, cold wars, intrigue, politics, space navies, Newtonian space combat with capital ships - sounds like The Honorverse. Hornblower in Space, in fact! Here, have the star chart.

How about War-Hammer 40k. Even if it's not really the 40 Millinieu in the Elite - Dangerous yet.
Although I would do away with Chaos, Orcs, Eldar and the Tau and replace the Tyranids with Thargoids.
As for game, I have wanted a HomeWorld one and two and Sins of the Solar Empire styled RTS game based on the Elite - Dangerous universe.
Though, I was thinking of having the Navy, Pirates and Thargoids as factions instead of the Federation, Empire and Alliance

I even had a look around Relic Forums to see if the Modding community had come up with anything like that.

Would Frontier Developments mind if they tried.

A few things come to mind, if I were able to add influences. One is the Alien universe with its dark, gritty, cold and lonely vision of space. The way their settings seem industrial, yet technological and realistic in a gritty sense really inspires my imagination for the kind of setting I would like to experience. The docking bays, the bridges and the living quarters and internals, along with the planet surfaces with their harsh uninhabitable environments are really awesome.

Going with that realistic approach I would add movies like Moon and Sunshine for the lonely into the void kind of feel as well, but they do seem archaic or ancient in comparison.

I think Star Trek could work well here too, not from the Starfleet perspective, but that of the intrepid explorers pitted throughout the stories in that universe. Alone, or with a small crew, exploring or partaking in some kind of mission in space or on a planet. I think this already fits the Elite universe quite well.

Oh yes, most definitely! I agree that the Alien universe has a feel that matches ED.

I got quite in to the Spinward Fringe series. I like the idea of an independent space station out on the edge of civilisation sending a few ships out. He went with AI ships gaining sentience and defending their own space. The bits I liked where the ships had different kinds of armour depending on type - for example a reflective armour that basically reflected laser weapons back at the source.

I would second the politics from Dune .. thoroughly enjoyed the books; film; both TV mini-series (Dune & Children of Dune) .. spanking.

Yep, another +1 for Dune. Loved the book and strangely enough the Film.

Great political background.
