Whys the beta look better than the released game? Where all these graphics go!

I don't get it - what's different?

The first video is the asteroid field combat demo. The 2nd is an encounter from supercruise into a largely empty sector. I don't see any major differences - what exactly is missing?

If you head to a resource extraction site, you can still fly through the 'roids fighting other ships as per the top video. The only thing I can think of is the lens flare, which was too much initially, and the newer "projected" hud, which you can disable the glow from in the options.

OP - Might be better to run the Single Player Combat training again on your machine and record it. Then set up a similar combat exercise at a resource extraction in the live game, and record that, for comparison. With the same gfx settings throughout.

The only thing I really noticed was the flare from the sun in the second video. I remember that graphic effect. It was kind of cool

Talking of graphics, is the Anaconda damage model still in game? I remember seeing a vid of someone testing it in beta by going into silent running in order to create heat damage that his mate filmed from a sidewinder. It was awesome, but I'm stuffed if I can find it now and certainly haven't seen anything like it in game recently (not that I get that close to enemy Anacondas while letting them live :p)

maybe its because im playing atm thats both are infront of me but the parts that immediatly hit me were

1min - the trails from when the target boosted
up till around 1:17 the lense flare glaring in from the left side looks amazing.
its going back but i dont ever remember the lighting from a multi-cannon being so exaggerated on a cobra/sidewinder
the cobra fight from 2 minutes onwards has a ton of smoke and other effects during combat, the small details like the bloom coming off the lights on the ship also looks great.
the flares and particle effects on the explosion of that cobra dying at around the 4 minute mark though, wow.

I've spent the last week or so just permently pew pewing in combat zones and an anaconda explosion on ultra looks NOTHING as spectacular as that cobra did. The best i can provide at the moment is my last video and that was playing around with head tracking

as you can see at the 4 minute mark the explosion pales in comparison aswell as theres no light bloom etc.

I still don't see the problem. Apart from the removed extreme light effects from the sun, all these things you mention are still in the game, although somewhat toned down.

Then what do you call that:

Thats exactly the point! Theyre toned down and a few just dont look as spectacular. They were already ingame, why remove them, why not make it a settings option? Why not make it an ultra setting etc. So many people on the defense force -_- im not putting the game down, i love elite and think it looks good but it used to look better imo. I got the rig to push it more, i'd love to enable it and get those little light blooms, the flares (especially as i'm in deep space exploring atm) etc but i feel like im repeating myself now to people who've only scooted over a few posts.

Edit - you'd added a pic, which tells me you never even watched the original video.

the anaconda explosion you uploaded -

vs the beta explosion in the video of a smaller ship -

I don't understand the arguments of "having to make the game run on lower spec PCs". They are PCs!! This means within the option menus you can have a vast amount of quality settings. Why should people that have high end PCs have graphics reduced (such as the texture quality, and pop-in we now have)?

And sure back in both Beta's (and Gamma) a lot of people experienced stutter, but for a lot of other people the game ran flawlessly.

The representation of the milky way looks like a zoomed in gif from 1995. Most of the stuff in the game looks ok. The milky way...not so much.

The skybox also seems to have reduced in quality a heck of a lot. It's really noticeable if you have a wider resolution than 1080p.

Yes, this continues to drive me crazy. Devs seem to make games so they're playable on smart phones, and people with high end machines get disappointment.

It's like owning a Porsche. Why? You're just going to go out on the highway and be behind some junk Honda/Hyundai/Toyota struggling to do 45.

Personally I really liked the skybox of Alpha better than the more "realistic" milky way. It's so boring now. And the sun, the sun was bright and "dangerous" in Alpha.

This is the second time ive echoed Titus Balls in a thread, but I wholeheartedly agree that the game hit a magical period during beta that FELT amazing, really felt like Elite.

You'd approach a station from a fair distance, start to see ships, keep an eye on your radar... see a cloud of cannisters and players picking amongst the scraps after a battle you just missed... damaged ships returning from a warzone trying to make it to the station for repairs...

There was one warzone and everyone knew about it. Supercruise looked amazing with a corridor of players going to and from the battle.

Trading was boosted up for testing, so if you needed cash it wasn't a grind, you just headed for your favourite trade route for a while. There were no rares. Trading was fun.

There were no shield cells. Smaller ships were brutalised vs bigger ships. If you wanted to hunt bigger prey you needed a bigger ship. This made sense.

It was exciting and the forum reflected that.

The only graphics change I don't like is the brighter station interiors - they used to be darker, grittier.

The placeholder in the alpha was the same romanticised colourful Fisher Price version of space you have in most other games, like EvE or the X series.

Actually that's a good point - the game can currently look like a genuine NASA photo at times, but we've seen NASA photos to death and space DID used to look more dreamlike.

Yeah, God forbid they make a video game about space ships with colorful and artistic nebula in the background.

I remember when they cranked the lens flare up to 11 in PB, it looked amazing. It was a PITA to play, but the screenshots were epic.
:
That being said, a "fancy pants" button fir screenshots and videos would be good.
