General / Off-Topic If you liked it then you should have put a Rep on it

Deadly, But very fluffy...
 :D

I know how you feel, I only get rep for the lighthearted stuff.

Nope, ive repped you a few times for being helpful in answering questions for me, i like your mod style and have suggested to a few members when they ask me something i dont know/or am not sure about, that they go to you.

Even if you dont get nearly half the rep you deserve, you have my thanks for being a top bloke and Mod! :)

Quite often in my head my posts are so funny or insightful that they should be repped through the roof, in the real world they are fairly pants.

And I thought it was just me....

At least I know who to blame now. :D

But as I just said in another thread, Modding on here is great fun.

I find it a bit weird how rep seems to come in waves, rather than as a steady drip. Sometimes the rep counter stalls for ages, even though I'm clearly making brilliantly insightful posts all the time, and then suddenly a whole load of rep comes in for naff throwaway comments. People must be synchronising somehow...

Also, I got some rep the other day that knocked my tally up by 4 points! It was from someone with a 'spectacular aura', so I guess that may explain it. It's very annoying when you get rep from a newbie, and because it's greyed out you can't quite tell whether it's positive or negative. Still not sure whether I've ever got negged.

I found this ages ago on another site, it explains pretty well how the system works.

A question one can often find themselves trying to answer is about those
pesky green and red bars below peoples' names. It's also something that most
people aren't entirely certain about, and often don't quite get it right when
explaining it to people. Feel free to point out the irony of that last sentence
in the comments

.

How
do I get reputation?

Well, there are two ways:

  1. The Thumbs-up, thumbs-down system, which can be found below everyone else's
posts for you to add and take away reputation. Each upvote is equal to 1
reputation point. (This is currently disables on this forum. T.j)
  2. The built in VBulletin reputation system is next to the report button, and
is often called the "Sheriff's Badge" system. The amount of rep you can receive
depends on who gave it to you, and often the more reputation they have entitles
them to give out more reputation to you.
  3. The number of posts, combined with the age of your account add more
reputation points as time goes by!
Also, everyone gets 10 points to start out with, when you sign
up to the forums.

How do I lose reputation?
You lose reputation basically the opposite way of gaining it (by the first two methods
above).

  1. Using the thumbs-down system will remove 2 reputation points
  2. Using the "Sheriff's Badge" system will remove reputation points based on
the reputation of whoever is taking it away, with a higher reputation on their
part resulting in a higher loss on your part.
Any user can have their reputation modified at any time by a forum administrator.
But what about the bars?

Well, the bars are usually the confusing bit.
You'll notice that after 5 bars, the bars change shade of green/red, which you can see next to names of people with exceedingly high or low reputation on the forums.

The first bar is worth 1 point. The 2nd to 6th bars are worth 100 points each The bars beyond that are worth 200 points each For example to have 8
bars:

Code:
Bars 1-6 means 500 pointsBar 7 is 700Bar 8 is 900Bar 9 would be 1100,

As you can see from above, to have 8 bars,
you must have between 900 and 1099 reputation points, or for maths people, 900
< p < 1100.

Okay, I understand that now, but what about people with grey bars?

A grey bar means one of two things,
either that that person has disabled reputation from General Settings
on the User CP, or they have exactly 0 reputation points. All new
users start out with 10 points, which is why you didn't start on a grey
bar.

If reputation is disabled, you can still have your score changed,
and it is still recorded on the main User CP page, under "Latest Reputation
Received". Also, you will still see Post Thanks/Like on your profile. However,
the profile reputation tab will not be visible, and no-one will know how many
points you have.

Last Question: What about those funny titles people
get?

The little titles under people's names (like "Little Babby") are actually completely unrelated to Reputation. They are based instead on post count. I'm not gonna tell you anything about them other than you get updated to the 2nd title at 32 posts, because it's more fun to find them out yourself, like a little guessing game.

It does seem strange that as the only person that sees it is the repee - and that it performs no actual function (AFAIK) - that you have to spread it around.

I'm not an indiscriminate repper but nevertheless thought I'd done enough "spreading" but apparently not..

ETA - completely missed all the info just above my post ... :O

I think this is escalating to the mutual admiration society...

Personally I prefer to reply with appreciation, rather then measuring everything. It's the facebook era I know, but I digress.

Hover over anyone's green badges.

Oh! I didn't even know those green badges were there! I thought rep was some invisible thing seen only by the receiver.

How did I get 3 of these things?! You're all mad in here! :p

Well I'll have to start repping T.j more - he deserves at least 7 for putting up with us :-/

Edit: "You must spread some blah blah blah". Damn it T.j, sort this place out you lazy trucker! ;)

When I hover over the badges of Darren Grey I see that he has a spectacular aura about "them". I wonder what "they" are? And, is this aura visible through clothing?
