Ebook formats of Design Discussion archives

I like going over the posts of the Design Discussion archives but I wanted to also read it offline. To this end, I exported the first posts in the Design Discussion archives into the epub and mobi formats. The epub format works in Apple's iBook software and the mobi format is for Kindle devices and Kindle software.

Really nice idea! I usually print them out and read them while commuting from work to home. Someone with e-book reader this will be nice service.

Nice idea, it gives posters another avenue to review the DDF Archive. :D

Hi and thanks for this but I am having trouble opening either download. Calibre says they are corrupted, cannot get Kindle on my computer to open then and sending the file up to Amazon to process didn't work either.

Appreciate the trouble you went to, but no joy here.

I'm not the OP - but I've just downloaded both versions and tried them out, they seem to work fine for me. Maybe try re-downloading them, you might have gotten a corrupt download for some reason.

Hello Arbanax,

I did not check with Calibre but that is easy enough to do since it is a free download. I will try later tonight.
Update: I did check just now with Calibre 1.10 and both formats opened for me. I had chosen Generic Manufacturer and Generic device when I installed Calibre. You can change this by running the Calibre Welcome Wizard. If you still have problems, let me know what your settings are.

As for Kindle, you need to
1) Get your unique Kindle email address to send content to (on the Kindle somewhere and also on the Amazon website). Even software installations of Kindle have this unique email address.
2) Add your email to your Kindle management (done on the Amazon website) so that your emails will get through.
3) Send an email to the Kindle email address, from the email account that you authorized in step 2, with the mobi file as an attachment.

Concerning the Kindle, I had also read online that you should add the word "free" to the email address as in myKindleName@free.kindle.com and that is what I did when I tested sending the mobi file to my Kindle.

Very well done indeed. Thanks! Now I might be patient enough to actually read through all this, that I am able to stretch the text nicely on my screen.

Thanks jahvetti. No. That chapter should be visible and not span to a second chapter. There seems to be a problem in that file. It has been fixed and updated. Try downloading it again.

Still can't get this to work for Kindle. I sent it up and they don't seem to recognise it as a .mobi format. Not sure why, will try Calibre again as well.

Yeah and changed Calibre to generic and still can't convert the mobi format to pdf or any format, just comes back with failed to convert alert. Anyone got any ideas why this isn't working?

Just updated Calibre to latest version and this is the end error message I keep getting:

"calibre.ebooks.mobi.MobiError: Unknown book type: '#" XML:L'"

Not sure why this and Amazon aren't registering this as a .mobi file, but that seems to be where its falling down.

Are you using a hardware Kindle or a software Kindle? If it is a hardware Kindle device, you can supposedly connect it via USB to your computer and then drag and drop the file into the Kindle's "documents" folder. Then you can eject the Kindle device.

I have not tried the USB transfer method myself.

I used the latest (2.9) KindleGen from Amazon to compile the mobi file and tested it on a Kindle touch.

If you want it as a PDF, I can export it as PDF too. It is about 130+ pages.

I am using software kindle and sending it to my unique email to convert it and add to my files so I can download via whisper link. I've never had this problem before, and none of the files seems to be working for me.

Can you make them PDF and I'll convert them in Calibre myself, otherwise I think its a waste of your time. Not sure why this won't read it, but it seems like its only me, no idea why.

Here is the link to a PDF version.

I'll check some forums for that error. Thanks for sending the error message.

You might want to try opening the EPUB version in Calibre too.

Thanks IssacS much appreciated for your continued efforts in this. I did try the epub version to but again got an error message. I guess it must be something my end, but I'm stumped if I know what.

Thanks again.

Your not going to believe this, but opening the pdf it says corrupted, I think I will try downloading with another browser to see if that isn't the issue here. So strange, never had this much trouble ever.

Ah I'm such an idiot, I was right clicking and saving, so was getting a web link not left clicking going to your drop box site and downloading. I assumed that this was some sort of direct link and never bothered to go further to the actual file. No wonder I've had so much trouble. DOH:eek:

Anyway problem solved, thanks again
