Sounds like capture the flag!!

Used to be quite good at Team Fortress back in the Quake days.

I wonder how it'll translate to ED.

sounds more like that one gamemode from Star Conflict.
Just capture a...i dont even know what it was, i played during christmas and there it was a huge station in christmastree shape...hold it, get points etc.
Basically King of the Hill...in space

IDK, could be good, could be bad, I can't really say as I've been surprised by a lot of decisions that turned out well.

What I wonder is, did FD have this planned for some time or was this a recent development based on feedback and general perception of the current player base?

It seems that FD is working down the list of things that have been planned for quite some time, so a new set of high priority requirements would be a shift in operations that I'd like to watch carefully.

Speaking of which, when is that new roadmap coming ;)

Relatively consequence-free PvP arenas might be the best idea yet. No, this is not sarcasm. It not only would cater to the ADHD tween ragers attracted straight to PvP in any game, but let others dip a toe in the water, in a more "structured" way, and possibly WITH PROPER SERVERS. It could be awesome, and there may be pew pew :)

Whoa, don't do that...bad for your health.

Just a game....just a game...just a game.....oooooohhhhhhmmmmm

No sorry, I've made my mind up. Literally explode with rage.

I don't actually mind the idea of a PVP arena (so long as it's free choice of ships, no insurance costs and for the love of all the is holy no unlocks like battlefield), but no way it should come before the much more important mission content.

Pretty much. Why wasn't the data that was mined PVE related ... =(

I struggle to find reasons why people make excuses for other people and then hide behind them whilst trying to convince everyone else the truth has changed.

FD don't know, you don't know, and it would be a bad idea if anyone ever became convinced that we do know. This pattern of leaking an idea to test end user appetites and then develop something useless its what's causing the trouble to begin with.

Change the cycle, go on idea strike, see what they come up with next.

That is all.

Perhaps they're after pushing their own agenda.

1) Don't see how I should care, seems a simple mode to add which will have zero impact on me.
2) Maybe this is used internally for balance-testing.

I think an arena would be a fine addition to the game as long as it was setup within the current game world, so you have to travel there manually to take part. None of this no-consequence malarkey, make it have a deeper meaning to your character.

With the Xbox One announcement just having been made this now makes a lot of sense for the console generation...

And 1.3 has been announced as "Powerplay" so this now seems even more likely.

Another "game mode" would be a bad plan. It will just split development time between the 2.

If combat players are bored:

Expand the mission system to create much more involved missions.
Include multiplayer and player + NPC wing missions.
Pit players and groups of players against each other on missions (as you accept a mission, the counter mission becomes available to others)
Add more interesting scenarios and set objectives to combat zones.
Add random events to draw players in (distress calls, station under attack etc).

Any kind of PvP other than organic, open world, what ever happens type encounters will cause the focus of many players for Balance. The game will become controlled by the FotM builds and all of the constant calls for Balance. Bug, Exploit, and Balance are three of the four horsemen of the Forums Apocalypse. And it just doesn't have to be that way. FD should ignore PvP all together, and let it sort itself out.

Its sounds to me that along with the combat arena, "Powerplay" suggests faction wars and greater influence over taking territory.

I am for anything that creates more sales and gives players more reason to log in.

I have long suggested that Arenas already exist, in the form of the training areas. Incursion is a perfect example of an Arena, just with AI only.

I think FD can develop Arena play to satisfy more gamers and make more money without too much effort. All the assets exist already whether ships, weapons or play area (stellar forge). They have already created training instances separate from the persistent galaxy, and 1.2 Beta just tested moving over account data like Credit Balance and Ships between different game instances.

This in turn leads to further development of the game, which is their stated intention and which everyone here should be very much in favor of.

Because FD didn't follow CIG into ever-expanding stretch goals and selling ships and getting $80 million, my greatest fear for the game has always been limited appeal (flight simulators), limited budget, and lack of fully deserved support. The game engine has legs and FD know Procedural Generation, but they have to have support or it will mean nothing.

So count me very excited by this and XBOX announcements. More players and more income is positive for all of us, even if they have to spend a small amount on a couple of new modes that utilize everything already built.

And as an example, the "racing game" that CIG made after arena commander took two developers less than a month start to finish.

You're living in a fantasy world mate. I highly doubt it. This is kumbaya sing by the campfire in space, not spreadsheets online.
