News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

Fair enough, have fun with the upgrades :)
Puzzles me a bit when PC gamers play on PCs that are bad for gaming on lol

Economics...it always comes down to that. Fortunately, I'm not a poor card puncher anymore and can game like I've always wanted to :D

I wonder if planet landing and first person are still on the agenda - would like to see something 'soon' regarding these future expansions.

Personally, I'm glad FD have partnered up with Microsoft to release ED to the console market, for no other reason than it, hopefully, produces a nice strong revenue stream for the company and the game itself. That said, I certainly hope the past plans for the expansions have not been muddied or changed... with no one saying anything to the existing, invested, backer, community, because we all know how well that goes down, don't we!

This will be huge fall back on PC development and dx11 engine, Elite will be stuck in middle because console hardware.

FD dont sell your soul to Devil for more $

Microsoft has already made free patches for Indie, and have drastically cut the time for patches. They have learned and seem to be applying their lessons. Phil Spencer seems to be a true gamer and not just a corporate head with no knowledge of the product. I have both a One and a PS4, I like both. I don't have a PC because I have a wife that knows me all too well. Now I don't need a PC. ED for my One and NMS for my PS4 and my childhood dreams are complete.

It doesn't - these are still important features for the core game. We're still developing for PC as well as the new platforms.

Michael

Will the major feature updates for PC still continue at the same rate? How will this affect the support process? Knowing how this sort of thing usually goes, I fear the game will be crippled by development resources being redirected away from the PC side.

Welcome to all radial menus from XBOX ...
Do you realized That You Will Never make Any profit from that! ?
PC Games are much more profitables, instead of making it for Linux (as you said) , you're doing it for XBOX ???
Instead of making the MOST awesome PC Game of the next 10 years , you're doing it for XBOX ??? !!!!
I'm disapointed , really. Elite: Dangerous was never supposed to be a console game. Shame on you guys ... Shame on you ...
You're waisting your time.

Thanks, that at least clears it up for now - and confirms it's essentially a developing story. I'd suspect it will be what you say for launch - and maybe one day we can fly together if the technical part of it can be worked out.

We'll give you more information on this as soon as possible.

I'd hate to see them attempt something like make a pie, the whole town would burn down.

Are you kidding?? They'd never try something that difficult without wingeing for months that the apples need to be nerfed and they should have a drone with tractor beams to make pies like in EVE. And besides, pie-making doesn't make enough millions of credits/hr and the whole pie-making minigame is woefully incomplete, really.

DX12 was pioneered on Xbox and was initiated by that console so please do not spread falsehoods.
PCs are getting DX12 because of the Xbox and the need to squeeze more performance out of it.

We will be making sure these forums are still a nice place to visit... there will also be a dedicated Xbox area on the forums. Not saying we won't allow crossover, but that will hopefully push people to discuss the game in the forum area for the platform they're playing it on.

This won't work. Trust me. One forum will be the central general discussion forum, most likely the one that already exists. I mean, think about it, if you were an XBox player, why wouldn't you read and post in the forum that is already established and has all the interesting threads? An XBox-related subforum will effectively only be useful for disussing topics that apply only to that version, or the console as a whole.

This is the first time I'm beginning to have doubts about the future of Elite. I really hope that the hardware limitations of XB won't affect the PC development stream. I do remember Mr. Braben talking about future-proofing Elite Dangerous, so it's kind of ambivalent feeling here on my side. I don't know what to think about this if I'm honest.

Well, you're right. Every single decision of the dev team, as minor as it may seem, will have to be made with every platform in mind. There will be compromises. It is 100% inevitable.
The big question for me is more like... they have announced the XBone version now but how long have they internally already had it on their mind? How much of the current ED is already a game that has been made with consoles in mind? Has there been internal builds running on the Xbone (dev kit) for the longest time already?
If what I suspect is true, which is that Xbone has been planned from the start, then the current state of the PC version bodes well for the future as FD seem to respect the PC platform and PC gamers' specific needs. If, however, the Xbone version is a relatively new prospect, then the future has indeed become a lot more uncertain. Who knows what compromises and dumbing down will ensue to make both versions of the game more manageable for the FD team? I guess we will inevitably find out in the not too distant future. No real immediate need for putting on any helmets just yet ;) .

Yep. Another naive assumption from Frontier that displays a lack of understanding the demographic.

Yeah, that's just not that case.

Each console, despite being the same at the very lowest level, is not just a PC. There are hundreds of thousands of lines of code running in the OS of a PC, Mac, and XBO that are totally different. While many elements will port across no bother, there will have to be work done. It's not just a BUILD > XBO button that will magically make it work. They have to integrate it with the XBO (granted much of this work will be done in their previous development on the cobra engine) so that basic things like saving a file, or sending network traffic work. Additionally, they will need to spend time getting the graphics set up just right.

It's not as complex as it used to be, but it's not a trivial job either. And they don't just have to do it once. Every update has to be built and tested on multiple platforms.

Which is exactly why I say it's a bad idea.

I Wouldn't spend time worrying about that. We'll give regular information out to you guys on these topics when that information is in a communicable state.

Thinking a bit more about it (and seeing http://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/1yg83d/consoles_and_pcs_playing_together/)

I think it'll be OK - basically PC Elite and XBox Elite WILL be two separate platforms, that just share a background gameplay state.

Not everything will work on console, so it will most likely be Elite: Lite in that sense, and shouldn't necessarily hinder the PC game's progress (if Frontier don't mess it up - so....)

DBOBE has categorically said it won't be dumbed down. So it won't be "Lite".
